Chapter 644: Chapter 644: Beware of the Dog_1
During the process of being escorted to interrogation, Song Lan carefully reflected on himself, pondering all the possible reasons the Consortium Guard might have found him, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t think of a reason why the knights would summon him.
Ever since he arrived at the castle, he had only cooked a meal and then went to bed to sleep.
Could that have violated some familial taboo?
Although he hadn’t heard of the Scarlet Lord’s name before, according to the job descriptions within the Consortium, anyone who was granted the title of a lord was among the elite of the elite, and even the key members of the Consortium would treat them with respect.
Especially during these troubled times, every family was secretly trying to win over the leaders of these Knight Groups.
Song Lan was once again blindfolded, and almost the moment he was shoved into the interrogation room, a pungent, fishy stench assaulted his nostrils.
Immediately after, he heard the low growls of a beast and the grating noise of claws scraping against a cage.
The Scarlet Lord himself removed the blindfold, allowing him to clearly see the massive creature caged just a few meters away from him.
This monster resembled a wolfhound but had two heads and was several meters long. Upon seeing it, Song Lan wondered if this wolfhound was an extra from a neighboring biohazard film set, what kind of aesthetic must one have to keep it as a pet.
That pungent fishy odor was emanating from the dog’s mouth, and its fangs seemed to have some indeterminate pieces of meat clinging to them.
The Scarlet Lord secured Song Lan in the interrogation room’s seat, gave him a meaningful look and then left the room.
The double-headed beast, as if receiving some signal, excitedly started to scratch at its cage.
The entire cage shook as if on the verge of collapse, as though it might break free from its enclosure at any moment.
Before long, the Scarlet Lord’s face, as ugly as the beast’s, appeared as a holographic image opposite him.
"I’ll ask again, what were you doing all evening."
"Sleeping."
"I suggest you think carefully."
The Scarlet Lord whistled, and the beast scratching at the cage intensified its efforts.
"I really was sleeping."
"Then let me remind you, when was the last time you saw the Head Maid?"
"About two hours ago, she explained to me how to use the different areas of the room and then left."
"So you do not deny that you were the last person to see her."
"Wait a second, are you saying something happened to the Head Maid?"
"Someone attacked her, and she’s been gravely injured, hovering between life and death."
The Scarlet Lord briefly described the current condition of the Head Maid. However, he seemed not so much concerned about the severely injured maid as intent on moving the interrogation to the next phase, "Before she left, she said something to you, and you need to recount every word to me. This is your only chance to save yourself."
Upon learning of the Head Maid’s assault, Song Lan was also stunned for a long while.
From his years spent online as a Power Measurer, he was almost certain that the Head Maid’s combat abilities would be above an average Consortium Guard knight, and she always carried five throwing knives with her. Would the person who attacked her not fear being stabbed?
"It wasn’t me, right, there are surveillance cameras in the attic, you should be able to see that I never left the building."
"I know. If it weren’t like that, you wouldn’t be sitting here, but in the belly of the two-headed dog, here – take a good look at it. Many spies have already been devoured by it before you."
?
Song Lan admitted the Scarlet Lord was right about one thing: he was indeed a spy with ulterior motives, but this was a completely unfounded accusation; he hadn’t done anything suspicious so far.
"You just mentioned that the Head Maid arranged work for you tomorrow."
The Scarlet Lord patiently waited for a moment, allowing Song Lan to savor his time alone with the double-headed dog. He knew the fear of being torn apart by the beast that could break out of its cage at any moment tortured Song Lan’s heart—a fear that was agonizing for a Neutral Country chef inexperienced in such matters, for every second he spent in the interrogation room.
And this was exactly their intention.
To completely dismantle Song Lan’s psychological defenses, then throw him a lifeline at the right moment.
This method had never failed, "You just mentioned the Head Maid said that Ms. Kalida is willing to give you another chance, to have you take care of her and her daughter’s lunch."
"That’s what she said."
"I’ll tentatively believe you, so I’ve decided to give you a chance to redeem yourself by performing a meritorious deed."
The Scarlet Lord coaxed.
They of course knew exactly what the Head Maid had told Song Lan in the kitchen, and they were also aware that the Head Maid had made a special trip to Ms. Kalida’s residence in order to keep this Neutral Country chef.
And it was precisely because of this that they discovered an unprecedented opportunity.
"I’ve heard that ever since that absurd trial, the young miss has been in poor physical and mental health, struggling to eat recently. See, do you notice what’s on the table?"
It was a vial.
There were no labels explaining its contents; inside, it was filled with white, pill-like granules.
Only at this moment did Song Lan realize the real reason he had been invited for "tea."
"I’ve always been worried about the young miss, and these pills are not easy to come by; I had to pull a lot of strings. They’ll be good for the young miss’s health. Tomorrow, as you prepare lunch for the young miss and the lady, I need you to grind these pills into powder and mix them into their food."
"But why don’t you give the pills to them directly?"
"You don’t need to know the reason."
The Scarlet Lord whistled again.
Receiving the signal, the double-headed dog became even more frenzied. Its roars grew louder, the frequency at which it scratched the cage increased, and its eyes glinted with a bloodthirsty light.
And just at that moment...
The sound of the cage breaking rang out.
The noise, contrary to the usual procedure, startled the double-headed dog into stillness—its master had not yet given the order to tear the prey to pieces.
As it looked up in confusion, it happened to lock eyes with Song Lan.
Instantly, an unprecedented fear surged within it, making every hair on its body stand on end.
Instinct drove it, making it want to flee the place as fast as possible.
"Don’t move."
The voice that emerged in its mind suppressed its actions. It clearly saw Song Lan hadn’t spoken, yet the voice reached its mind.
"Soon, you will destroy this cage, and then you must pounce on the first person who comes near."
The cold voice was giving it orders, "Otherwise, I will never forgive you."
