Chapter 634: Chapter 634: Knight’s Hometown_1
This was Lu Xiang’s first visit to The Second Region.
As a big city only second to The First Region in terms of economy, politics, and land area, The Second Region was a place many dreamed of.
Statistics showed that The Second Region had been awarded the city with the lowest crime rate for the past few years, presenting an extreme contrast with the Seventeenth Region, where Lu Xiang had previously been.
The aircraft both were on bore the Iris Consortium’s logo, and the flight attendants all wore a corresponding emblem. In The Second Region, everything from living and transportation to business and politics was under the control of the Iris Consortium.
The flight from the Seventeenth Region to The Second Region was sparsely filled, with just a few scattered company people.
Lu Xiang browsed through the electronic promotional brochure provided for the passengers. Although it didn’t directly extol the Iris Consortium’s greatness, one could read between the lines throughout the text.
"Back when we were in school, The Second Region was the most popular among students, but only 1% of the top students had the chance to work there," she remembered.
The booklet brought back many memories for her; nearly everyone in her old dorm had kept an electronic brochure for The Second Region. Unfortunately, their academic results weren’t good enough, so they all placed their hopes on Lu Xiang.
They referred to Lu Xiang as the hope of the entire dormitory. Based on her academic performance, there was a great possibility she would be invited to work in The Second Region after graduation, maybe even directly for the Iris Consortium.
These trivial recollections inadvertently brought a smile to her face. It was her second year at Morning Star Academy, a pretty fulfilling and happy period. "They were all shocked when they heard I was being transferred to work in the Seventeenth Region," she reminisced.
Of course, apart from surprise, there were many who ridiculed her behind her back.
What does it matter if you have good grades?
In the end, didn’t you get transferred to a border city?
"Have you never thought of going to The Second Region?"
As Song Lan flipped through the electronic brochure by her side, he saw the city from an objective perspective as one without any apparent flaws.
"I thought about it, but then I didn’t get along with Isabella, so I gave up the idea," Lu Xiang responded.
"You had a conflict with her?"
"Not exactly. She invited me when she enrolled, but I refused. I really couldn’t stand their family traditions. Hey, do you know what those who swear allegiance to their family have to do?"
"No idea."
"They have to kiss their boots. I really don’t know who came up with that."
When Lu Xiang heard about the Iris family’s tradition, she immediately rejected Isabella’s unreasonable request, considering it an insult. But later, she found that many people seemed to enjoy it.
The reason Isabella later had such influence at Morning Star was precisely because of this.
She was the rightful heiress of the Iris Consortium, one of the legal successors. With just a word from her, any student could get the chance to work in The Second Region.
"They call this etiquette a knight tradition. I heard those approved by Isabella would receive the title of Knight, a proof of their allegiance sworn to the Iris Consortium. But I haven’t really studied their complicated ceremonies," Lu Xiang said with a shrug.
"It’s more than that, you know. Knight is an official job in The Second Region, equivalent to a soldier of the Iris Consortium."
A familiar voice came from behind them.
Song Lan turned around and saw the distinctive ensemble of a white lab coat paired with a nanotech bodysuit.
At that moment, Jasmine was resting her hand on their seats, her mouth covered by a mask and a pair of sunglasses perched on her nose to hide her face, "What a coincidence, I didn’t expect to run into you here."
Her gaze intentionally lingered on Song Lan for quite a while, "I’m glad you’re still alive, it seems those who wanted to assassinate you have failed once again."
"All thanks to our brave and valiant supervisor, who always nips evil in the bud."
Hearing this, Lu Xiang smiled politely at Jasmine and subtly placed her hand on Song Lan’s thigh under the table. She didn’t apply any pressure or make any threatening gestures, but the touch on his thigh made Song Lan tense up, a chill running down his spine.
He immediately sought help from outside the situation, "You know the Second Region well?"
"I suppose so, I’ve dealt with them quite a bit because of work."
Jasmine noticed that the seat behind Lu Xiang and Song Lan was empty, so she sat down behind them.
Delta used to nag endlessly in her ear, which was annoying, but Jasmine found it somewhat unsettling now that Delta had suddenly become quiet.
When Delta accidentally heard the recent news and learned that the upper echelons of the Morger Family had almost all been assassinated, she became like a frostbitten eggplant, barely speaking anymore, and when she did, it was in a low whisper.
This made Jasmine wonder if there were some ties between Delta and the Morger Family.
"The Second Region has no Law Enforcers department and no troops appointed by the United Government. All judicial upkeep of order is conducted by the Iris Consortium’s Knight Group, who take pride in the possibility of becoming a Knight."
Typical aristocrats.
Song Lan thought to himself, then asked out of curiosity, "Do they ride horses when they’re on duty?"
"They don’t, but the Iris Consortium has crafted a series of custom military gear for their Knights."
Jasmine motioned for Song Lan to flip through the electronic brochure to a page ten or so pages further back, dedicated specifically to the glorious Knights of the Iris Consortium.
Song Lan soon saw the Knights’ mode of transport for the year 2167.
The silver-white bodywork, flamboyant design, and the detailed and complex equipment took up two pages.
The Knights’ armors were also custom-made, inspired by the concept of knightly armor and integrating the technology of exoskeleton suits.
Each person who became a Knight for the Iris Consortium received this set of equipment on their first day.
"There is also a strict hierarchy among the Knights, and when they rise to a certain level, the Iris Consortium custom-makes an exoskeleton suit for them based on their combat style. I’ve heard that the armor worn by the core members’ guards costs as much as a small town ’outside’."
Jasmine lowered her voice.
The way she looked now, without any hint of her Six Stars rescuer stature, she seemed more like a girl gossiping with friends, "You mentioned earlier that Isabella sought you out, she most likely wants to train you for her Personal Guard."
Besides ability, the Iris Consortium values loyalty very highly.
That’s why they send the progeny of core members to the Morning Star academy, a process also meant to build their power base.
"Isabella can’t imagine you would reject her, which, in her eyes, is a great favor to the Common People."
Jasmine said, "How could these sheltered daughters, born with silver spoons in their mouths, ever truly understand what others think?"
