Chapter 632: Chapter 632: Suffering from bad Reputation_1
Several days had passed when Guan Lili once again called Song Lan.
As someone from District 17 who had indirectly witnessed the incident, she naturally received some rumors, such as the Mendoza-Morger holding a meeting with Lu Xiang and Song Lan on the night of their deaths, with no one knowing what happened at the banquet, as all witnesses disappeared along with the Hailu Energy building.
Afterward, the Ragus Foundation sealed off the news and took responsibility, making the whole affair appear more like a bloody and brutal political struggle.
Before making the call, Guan Lili hesitated for a long time.
Because she had already called Qi He yesterday. Although she scolded him over the phone, he just kept laughing and playing Tai Chi with her, revealing nothing useful.
She felt that Qi He had tricked her, leading her onto a thief’s ship.
Next, she might also be silenced as a "person in the know."
But, as the saying goes, better to die a knowing ghost, Guan Lili eventually decided to make the call.
"Hello? Where are you right now?"
Guan Lili asked.
"At home."
"I’m at an abandoned factory in the southwestern corner of District 17, alone, and the environment here is just right. If someone wanted to silence someone else, it might take a very long time before the body is found."
"You’ve been kidnapped!?"
Song Lan sat bolt upright from the sofa, "Has Engle finally made a move against you? Get him on the phone, let me talk to him. As a Five Star rescuer, you’ve got a lot of life ahead. There are still opportunities, you know."
"Don’t mention that coward, Little Devil, bad luck!"
Guan Lili on the other end of the phone spat, "He probably heard the rumors of the Mendoza-Morger heading to District 17 and ran off a long time ago."
"Then what are you doing in a place like that?"
"Because I want to die understanding the situation. Song Lan, come over now, and let’s talk it over. If you’re going to silence me, just make it quick."
"Not necessarily, not necessarily."
Guan Lili’s tone seemed as though she had already put life and death aside. Song Lan felt there might be some serious misunderstanding between them; obviously, she was treating him as if he was a serial killer.
After hanging up the phone, Song Lan immediately found the MK-III parked downstairs. Seeing Song Lan, the bicycle feeding on dirt for replenishment cheerfully spun around and darted to his side.
After Song Lan gave Guan Lili’s location, the MK-III zoomed out of the neighborhood like a bolt of lightning.
Grandpa Li, who was on patrol, saw Song Lan’s silhouette disappearing into the distance and could only sigh with longing. Just yesterday, he had asked Song Lan where to buy such a bicycle. Being older and less mobile, he wanted to buy one for his own retirement, but when he went to the bike market as Song Lan suggested, he found no models equipped with artificial navigation.
The bike shop owner guessed Song Lan had modified the bike himself, taking the navigation system and engine from a car and installing them on his bike.
As to why he went to such lengths, the bike shop owner had no idea.
It was a free age, he thought; one should respect everyone’s preferences.
What Song Lan didn’t know was that his image, decked in a safety helmet, weaving through the city, had brought a new legend to the city.
The speed at which MK-III traveled could already surpass most sports cars on the market. It took less than ten minutes after hanging up the phone for Song Lan to race to the southwestern corner of the city, where he eventually found Guan Lili on the rooftop of an abandoned factory.
Their meeting, however, was somewhat strange.
Guan Lili stood on the very edge of the rooftop, as if she might leap off if their conversation took a wrong turn.
"What exactly happened?"
"What conspiracy do you and Qi He have? Why did he specifically ask me to handle this?"
"How should I know? I’m not that familiar with him."
Song Lan spoke the truth, admitting that on their last meeting he was just tagging along with Lu Xiang and Qi He, as the conversation mainly revolved around them. He was only there because Lu Xiang said that attending meetings with her counted as working hours.
"Did you guys ever plan on killing me to silence me? I know that on the night the Sea-Land Energy Building disappeared, you and Lu Xiang met with the Mendoza Morgue."
There were also some other bits and pieces of news.
For instance, when Mayor Aureliano went downstairs for a run, he accidentally broke two fingers, and it was clear to anyone with eyes that this had something to do with the Morger Family.
Guan Lili had been preoccupied with this matter for the past few days, to the point where she even dreamed of an assassin sent by Lu Xiang breaking into her place to silence her. The stress had become unbearable. Instead of living in fear, she preferred to face the situation head-on and be upfront about it.
Given Lu Xiang’s power in District Seventeen, it was only a matter of time before her gaze settled on Guan Lili.
With one leap from here, she could be a hero again in sixteen years!
"Rumors,"
said Song Lan. "That night, Old Lu and I were at home the whole time, we didn’t go anywhere."
Guan Lili didn’t reply immediately. She locked eyes with Song Lan for a long time before she slowly stepped back from the edge of the rooftop.
"You can rest assured, there are no professional assassins in District Seventeen. If someone threatens your personal safety, you can call the emergency hotline at any time, and the Law Enforcers will definitely find a way to help you out of your trouble,"
"Alright, I got it."
Guan Lili nodded, "You and Lu Xiang didn’t go anywhere that night."
Song Lan’s explanation obviously didn’t convince her, but right now, the truth wasn’t important. Since he had already stated that he and Lu Xiang were at home on the day of the incident, she decided to go along with that narrative. Seeking the truth was not the responsibility of a director of a publicity department.
If she wasn’t silenced after meeting with Song Lan today, at least she could sleep well upon returning to her place tonight.
"By the way, since I’m here, there’s something I need to tell you. The upcoming shooting schedule might not be able to proceed, because we have some urgent matters that require us to leave District Seventeen for a while."
Talking about work gave Guan Lili a splitting headache.
Even with her ample experience, she had no idea how to carry on with the shooting, and it was a task heavily monitored by the Review Meeting. If she couldn’t handle it properly, she might lose her position as director.
"As for the shooting, I actually have an idea,"
"Let’s hear it."
"Are you okay with image synthesis technology? That is, using your portrait, we can synthesize the documentary through technological means, so you don’t need to be physically present. But this requires your personal consent."
Normally, the company would act first and report later, but with the recent series of events, Guan Lili felt this approach might not work with Song Lan.
The waters of District Seventeen are simply too deep.
Unlike the rescuers under contract to the company, the people here were truly ruthless. They could kill without batting an eyelid, and even the notorious Mendoza Morgue couldn’t survive two days in this city.
"It doesn’t really matter to me, but don’t make the documentary too exaggerated. I’m not like what the electronic manual describes in real life."
Exaggerated?
Guan Lili scoffed inwardly. Compared to the real Song Lan, she thought the content of the electronic manual might be too conservative.
But now, she could only agree with Song Lan’s wishes, "I’ll try my best."
Submitting a synthesized documentary would be far easier than dealing with Song Lan directly.
Out of professional ethics, Guan Lili still felt compelled to offer a word of caution. She tried to phrase her words as gently as possible to come across as diplomatic, "Now is a critical time for establishing your image. Many will scrutinize your every word and action, so you need to be mindful of your behavior in public."
"For example?"
"For instance, try to avoid killing people in public places."
