Chapter 600: Chapter 600: Helpless, Weak and Pathetic, Yet Able to Eat!_1

Song Lan ultimately failed to buy shoes.

The invasion by the mutant aberrations forced all the stores in Antigon into shutdown, and with the citywide "Moon Plague," whether the shoe store owner was still alive was anybody’s guess.

However, Yeying, upon waking up, offered the two a new solution.

She transformed her right hand into the shape of a small hammer and knocked a hole directly into the door of the shoe store.

"This seems somewhat inappropriate..."

Song Lan looked at the dazzling array of shoes in the store, many of which were the style of the Neutral Country.

As Law Enforcers, their official identity, engaging in zero-dollar shopping in another country undoubtedly violated the code they upheld as law enforcement officers.

"I will pray for the owner," Yeying said, hands joined in prayer, her attitude one of utmost devotion. "Father Delari taught me how to pray for others, may the place the owner’s soul departs to be free of suffering."

"Why do you assume the owner is dead as a premise for your prayers?"

"Because that way, nobody will find out we smashed the shoe store’s window," Yeying stated matter-of-factly.

The Lunar Eclipse Sect had strict rules, and even the "Angel of Death" could not run rampant in the streets; such trespassing into homes was strictly forbidden. The stringent rules were also an important reason for the unity of the believers, and Church Governors never abused their strength in everyday life.

She knew very well that if the Archbishop heard of this, she would be confined to solitary for at least a week.

Yet even so, Yeying was unhesitant in her resolve to smash the window.

For she had overheard the conversation between Song Lan and Lu Xiang while she had been drowsy; soon, they would depart from the Neutral Country and return to District Seventeen.

She wanted to repay both of them and the whole Bug Swarm.

It wasn’t just because Song Lan had fed her many delicacies she had never tasted before but also because their arrival had led to a different outcome for the Ceremony of Ending.

Just as Song Lan, holding a pair of shoes, fell into hesitation, members of the Tribunal who had been alerted arrived and surrounded them.

He could never have imagined that his reputation in this life would be ruined over a pair of shoes. From the stern looks of the Tribunal members and the pointing fingers of the people on the street, it was obvious they did not believe the three had smashed the shoe store’s window to pray for the missing owner.

Worse still, a member of the Tribunal had walked in just as he was holding a pair of shoes in his hand.

"I alone am responsible for my actions; I am the one who smashed the shoe store’s glass!" Yeying stepped forward and said assertively.

"I know," said the Tribunal member. "Someone reported you, and the matter has already reached the Archbishop’s ears."

Upon hearing the Archbishop’s name, Yeying, who was posturing as a lawless brute, visibly deflated. She shrank her head and asked timidly, "Do you know that I smashed the glass of the shoe store?"

"Of course."

The Tribunal member gave her a sidelong glance and then spoke to Song Lan and Lu Xiang, "The Archbishop would like to invite you to her residence."

...

The waiting time was undoubtedly torture, but fortunately, Song Lan had finally put on a new pair of shoes, so the holes in his socks no longer had to endure the annoyance of the breeze.

He suddenly came to understand a truth.

Since they had already been brought here as suspected shoe thieves, wasn’t it a loss not to wear the shoes? Besides, they weren’t without money, so as long as they cleared up the misunderstanding and paid for the shoes, everything would be flawless. He believed that the Archbishop of the Lunar Eclipse Sect would definitely not invite them to her residence over such a trivial matter.

About a quarter of an hour later, the Archbishop opened the door of her residence.

Following her was Yeying, who had already been severely reprimanded, hanging her head low as if she had shrunk a little.

"I’m sorry. I didn’t expect that we would end up bringing you here in this manner."

As she spoke, Helifis couldn’t help but glance at Song Lan’s feet, "It seems that the new shoes fit quite well... I haven’t had the chance to thank you personally. If it hadn’t been for your help, I might not have realized that the Moon God’s omens were part of a conspiracy."

"There’s no need to thank us, we have a common enemy."

Song Lan asked curiously, "What do you plan to do next? Reveal the Moon God’s conspiracy to the believers?"

In fact, internally, the Lunar Eclipse Sect faced much more serious problems.

Their faith and cohesion were almost entirely built on the foundation of the Moon God; for the believers, perhaps there’s no heavier blow than the collapse of their faith.

"I still believe that ’God’ truly exists."

Helifis seemed to suddenly recall some beautiful memories, smiled with dimples showing, "I believe in the arrangement of fate and also believe that one day they will understand this too. It was I who was stuck in a dead end, but your arrival helped me see things clearly."

The real way to keep them from suffering wasn’t physical change; "believing" itself could bring them strength and hope.

"However, we indeed have more pressing matters to deal with the Barrosa Group; we need to find a cure for the ’Moon Plague’."

The seeds from the Moon God’s consciousness still exist, which is probably why the Barrosa Group calls it the sin gene.

If they can’t find a cure, the "Moon Plague" will eventually sweep through the country once again.

"I wish you luck."

Song Lan spoke up, unable to offer Helifis better advice on this issue, he could only hope that they would ultimately find a way to combat the erosion of the upper consciousness entity.

"I hope that our alliance can continue, and I have a feeling that sooner or later, we will have a day to fight side by side."

As she said this, Helifis’s gaze drifted to Yeying, who was stealing glances at them, "By the way, I have spoken with this child and learned some of her thoughts... According to the teachings of the Lunar Eclipse Sect, robbery on the streets is a very serious crime, and even the ’Angel of Death’ cannot be easily exempted from punishment, but considering her merits this time, I’ve decided to give this child a chance for redemption."

Helifis put her hands on Yeying’s shoulders, pushing her to Lu Xiang and Song Lan, "To ensure that our alliance continues more effectively, let this child become a liaison. It would also be good for her to learn by following you... Of course, all this requires your consent."

Yeying looked at Song Lan and Lu Xiang with expectant eyes, like a little animal abandoned on the side of the road.

Pitiful, weak, helpless, yet capable of consuming a lot!

Song Lan thought this description fit Yeying perfectly.

"Let her stay with us for the time being."

Lu Xiang nodded, "Then, we shall take our leave."
