Chapter 595: Chapter 595: The Heart is the Purgatory_1
The First Army Corp Commander threw Yeying to the side, his only reason for grabbing her was that he felt her mind sensing would still be useful until they found Helifis’s true form.
And at last, Purgatory revealed its true form before them.
Wherever Helifis had passed, the ground sprouted mouth-like fissures, from which undulating tentacles covered with barbs continuously emerged, forming a forest of tentacles on their inevitable path.
This seemed to be reminding them that if they wanted to catch Helifis, they first had to pass the test from Purgatory.
The sight before him made the First Army Corp Commander more certain of the speculation in his heart.
Helifis’s special physique was not a blessing, but a seed planted in her body by the Consciousness Entity, intended to bear the fruit called the Lunar Eclipse Sect in the future.
The writhing tentacles could not stop his pace, the kinetic chainsaw linked to his exoskeleton armor let out a sharp screech, and the jets on his back thrust him into this perilous forest. He had faced countless dangers before, and no monster could halt his advance.
However, to Song Lan, the Commander’s actions presented a different scene.
After shouting, "Don’t go, it’s a trap!" he threw Yeying back with force, causing her to plummet onto the hot sandy dune. Before Yeying could even get up, he bellowed and ejected himself with his propulsion device, swinging his kinetic chainsaw bravely... fighting the air.
Song Lan originally thought the Commander must have gone mad, but from the way he fought, he seemed to be mad with a method to his madness.
At least the Commander hadn’t forgotten the experience accumulated from countless battles, methodically dealing with the enemies before him. His movements even allowed Song Lan to vaguely guess the enemy he was facing at the moment— the wriggling tentacles, or perhaps something akin to a flesh-and-blood tree.
This thoroughly confounded him.
"Is something wrong with me?"
He pointed towards the empty expanse of the Radiant Sea ahead, seeking Lu Xiang’s help.
"It’s not you," Lu Xiang shook his head, "there’s nothing there."
"No, no!"
Yeying, who was nursing her buttocks, painfully got up and said, "Don’t you see? Where the Archbishop passed, flowers blossomed!"
The Church’s biography was right; it was indeed a gift of fate.
To bring forth new life on this land associated with Destruction and death was clearly a miracle!
She pointed excitedly at the path paved with beautiful flowers; the radiance caused by the radiation seemed to be absorbed by the plants as well. They were truly purifying the land, just as the Archbishop had promised.
The Archbishop had said that she would ultimately rescue every soul from this land of suffering and allow them to return to the embrace of the Father God.
So the actions of the First Army Corp Commander puzzled and angered her—he was swinging his kinetic chainsaw, destroying the miracles created by the Archbishop, and after the vegetation was ravaged by him, the radiation emerged again.
"That tin can has gone mad!"
She accused the Commander of his outrageous behavior.
The discussions behind him couldn’t stop the unstoppable advance of the First Army Corp Commander; he had gradually mastered the rhythm of combat. These paper tiger-like tentacles couldn’t harm him at all; what he had to do now was to carve a bloody path out of this Purgatory.
The contrasting descriptions from the two left Song Lan deep in thought.
He felt as if he had encountered a future version of the "crossing the river puzzle," where the differences in what the First Army Corp commander and Yeying saw seemed to be caused by their differing beliefs and current inner thoughts.
As for the path ahead, it had not changed at all for him and Lu Xiang, who were merely bystanders.
He had indeed noticed that each time the First Army Corp commander swung his chainsaw, the eyes growing on the back of his exoskeleton armor became more tightly connected to him; the meaty sprouts, resembling blood vessels, were spreading slowly to other parts, and he seemed completely unaware of it.
Song Lan did not dare to conclude that both the First Army Corp commander and Yeying had gone mad.
For bystanders or, shall we say, atheists themselves represent a standpoint; at most, this could only mean that the road ahead could change according to one’s identity and beliefs.
To prove she was the clear-headed one, Yeying once again stepped onto the path covered with flowers without any hesitation.
Her joyful demeanor, hopping and skipping, was in stark contrast to the bloodied, battle-worn First Army Corp commander.
For Song Lan, the road ahead was still scorching hot, and he had to use Spiritual Energy as a barrier to protect both himself and Lu Xiang as they crossed this radiation-polluted place.
Despite their different methods, their goal remained unchanged.
The Archbishop was just ahead.
Everyone was following the shadow that held a toy doll, constantly moving toward the other side of the Radiant Sea. In this process, her body was growing at a visible rate; time was speeding by, and she gradually grew from a little girl into a woman.
She changed into a proper rescue team uniform, seeming like a real angel in this radiation-infested hell.
After a while, they reached the end of the path.
The First Army Corp commander and Yeying simultaneously stopped, their eyes reflecting completely different scenes.
The First Army Corp commander, looking slightly fatigued, adjusted his equipment. The huge pit in front seemed to be the truth of this world, with a barely recognizable human figure standing in its deepest part, holding a scepter that represented supreme power. Her height had increased to nearly five meters after mutation; she had no facial features, just a gaping maw at the center, as if ready to swallow the whole world.
The ground at her feet had mutated too, the tormented souls surrounding her at the center, forming a natural altar.
The advancing shadow finally reached the monster and overlapped with her.
"You see, I didn’t lie to you!"
Yeying excitedly pointed to Helifis, surrounded by fresh flowers and verdant leaves, eager to show Song Lan and Lu Xiang the Archbishop bathed in the miracle’s light; she believed anyone who saw this scene would immediately believe the Archbishop was the Moon God’s messenger.
She was wearing a holy white robe, simply bathing in the divine glow, her scepter capable of bringing life and hope to this desolate land.
But in Song Lan’s eyes...
It was Helifis, the Archbishop of the Lunar Eclipse Sect, looking no different from the illustrations in the doctrine.
She just stood there calmly, waiting for the participants of this ritual to come before her.
The two shadows overlapped, and Helifis was watching them.
"Welcome to the end of this world."
That ethereal voice entered their ears.
