Chapter 592: Chapter 592: The Living People_1
Lu Xiang had once heard that when a person is falling rapidly, they instinctively grasp for any object nearby.
Now, she was proving this theory to be true and reliable with her actions, which directly resulted in Song Lan’s shoe being "lost in battle".
Even though Song Lan possessed formidable Spiritual Energy, he couldn’t conjure a shoe out of thin air under these circumstances.
"When we get back, I’ll buy you a new pair of shoes... you can pick any, no matter how expensive!"
Knowing she was at fault, Lu Xiang quickly added another sentence.
She could only learn from this lesson that if she encountered this situation again, she would try to reach higher, changing from grabbing the ankle to holding onto Song Lan’s trouser leg.
"I think this isn’t about whether or not to buy new shoes."
Song Lan looked down at his right foot, which was now missing a shoe, and as a domino effect, he had even managed to scrape his sock when landing.
With a great battle imminent, looking like this with one bare foot seemed very disrespectful to the Archbishop and the Consciousness Entity they were about to face.
A scream interrupted their conversation.
Looking towards the source of the noise, they saw an object flailing its arms uncontrollably as it plummeted through the red clouds, apparently still trying to adjust to the sudden change; Yeying at one point had forgotten her ability to fly.
They also witnessed the volume of Yeying’s voice, seemingly enhanced by gene modification as well.
It wasn’t until Yeying was about to smash into the ground that she finally, belatedly, flapped her bat-like wings and landed next to them in an exceedingly ungainly manner, sitting down on the ground panting heavily, her chest heaving dramatically.
Being immersed in the pool of blood was nothing short of torment for her.
Apart from worrying about becoming a "stinking Angel of Death", during the descension, her mind was flooded with countless thoughts and Whispers that weren’t her own; under their influence, every unpleasant memory she ever had was slowly coming back to her.
In that not-so-long process, she relived being selected by the Church, injected with unknown drugs, and then sent to the "mine" by the nuns; those blurry experiences became exceedingly clear.
For instance, she remembered her family for the first time—up until this point, her concept of family had been a blank for many years, as if her memory began only after she was sent to the "mine".
These memories reminded her that she wasn’t cultivated by a lab vessel, nor had she sprung from a rock; in a small village on the fringe of the Neutral Country, she had once had a happy and content family, even though the village suffered from devastating radioactive pollution and most villagers had short lifespans, her parents were an optimistic couple.
They were the lowest tier of Believers in the Lunar Eclipse Sect, those who may never interact with the core members of the Church, and were also likely never to leave their village their entire lives.
Until one day, a dignified priest arrived at the village.
The priest approached her parents and several other children, talked through the night, and in the end, her parents watched with reluctance as she and the other children left the village with the priest.
After that, she never had any memory of her parents again, to the point where Yeying once thought she and her sisters had all popped out from stones.
Then, those Whispers reminded her of details she had forgotten.
For example, she later heard news of the village’s destruction—a common occurrence for the people of the Neutral Country and the Lunar Eclipse Sect, where the majority of their lives were spent combating the disasters left by the Third War. Every year, villages succumbed to radiation and mutations, and survivors who left their homes banded together to establish new ones.
She heard the news one afternoon.
At that time, as an "Angel of Death" by the Archbishop’s side, she happened to hear a report from the commander of the Mutant Defense Force. Although they had deployed troops immediately, by the time they arrived, the villagers had already turned into zombies under the influence of the virus and mutations. To prevent the spread of the mutation, they had to burn down the village.
Yeying didn’t know why these trivial memories came back to her, but as they intertwined, she felt an unprecedented loneliness.
Subsequently, the Whispers called out to her.
They seemed to be calling her back into the embrace of "Father God", where all discomfort and sorrow from the past would be baptized away. This brief respite made her momentarily forget the blood-red vision that engulfed her sight, and the warmth felt like being back in swaddling clothes; it dispelled the loneliness and made Yeying wish it could last forever.
Just as she was about to close her eyes and rest for a while, the gentle murmur was interrupted by a harsh scolding.
The scolding was all too familiar to her ears.
Yeying had no choice but to open her eyes wide once again, and even though her vision was filled with blood-red, she still caught a glimpse of two figures flashing by.
Compared to the kind and gentle images in her memory, the expressions on her parents’ faces had suddenly become angry and distorted.
They were looking at her with eyes full of wrath, furiously telling her to get out of this place.
Yeying felt wronged.
She felt as if she had been driven out of "home" once again.
After that, she found herself passing through the blood-red clouds, for some reason, finding herself high up in the sky.
She recounted to Lu Xiang and Song Lan what she had seen in the blood pool. The exhaustion of body and mind made her sit on the ground, not wanting to stand up again.
"Your parents saved you," said the steel giant, who loomed like a mountain, and who had at some point rejoined the group. He was now looking down at her, his helmet covered by an exoskeleton armor, his voice obscured by a synthesized mechanical sound.
This was perhaps the means by which the Gene Warriors hid their emotions.
For a group of individuals who dedicated themselves to the battlefield from the moment they came into consciousness, personal emotions could only become stumbling blocks.
"In your terms, that was a call from ’Father God’. Once you respond to it, those who have turned into mutated constructs—like those Believers—will be your fate," explained the First Army Corp commander, trying to be as clear as possible for Yeying to understand.
Because just moments ago, he had undergone the same process.
In their "doctrine," this was contamination by another "Consciousness Entity," inscribed in their genetic sequence, potentially poised to erupt one day.
He seemed to understand why the Believers couldn’t resist the influence of the contamination.
The attackers weren’t the Consciousness Entities, but the most vulnerable part of themselves.
"You should be grateful, only those with an iron will can withstand those voices," said the commander of the First Army Corp. His words still rang with a coldness that seemed unapproachable. He gave Yeying a profound look, then turned away to face the distant horizons of this barren world, "The war must go on, and those alive are destined to keep moving forward."
His words sounded like advice to the three of them, but also a reminder to himself.
He tightened his grip on the kinetic chainsaw, the only companion he could trust on the battlefield.
Meanwhile, he presented the back of his exoskeleton armor to the three of them.
The sigil of guns and roses on the ink-gold metallic coating was obscured by the overgrowth of blood vessels and buds; an upright eye clung to his spine.
That pupil, as crimson as a pool of blood, was watching them.
