Chapter 581: Chapter 581: Steel and Dawn_1
The brutal battle had lasted until the next day.
When dawn arrived, Antigon was silent.
The sound of gunfire and the low growls of mutants had disappeared, leaving only the sound of footsteps, the noise made by the power boots of the exoskeleton armors as they stepped on the ground.
In the long battle that had lasted through the night, the elite troops of the Barrosa Group had demonstrated their unparalleled combat abilities. Song Lan, who had witnessed the whole process, wanted to wave flags and cheer for their heroic figures fighting in the front lines.
But he couldn’t do that.
On one hand, because he couldn’t find a suitable flag, and on the other hand, he and Lu Xiang, as civilians of Antigon, had been taken to a temporary gathering point with other Believers, by the Barrosa Group elites armed with ray rifles.
The mood amongst the Believers in the room was downcast. The disappearance of the Archbishop and the fall of Antigon had finally broken their last line of inner defense, leaving Song Lan as the only one in the crowd who was in good spirits— the timely arrival of the Barrosa Group’s elite troops had spared him the effort of sending these mutants to a better place.
The panicking crowd gave Song Lan an illusion.
Having stayed in this place for too long, he, a mere passerby, was almost becoming these Believers’ "Father God".
The Archbishop Helifis, who should have stood out to lead the situation, was nowhere to be found. As for the Moon God, revered by the Believers as loving and omnipotent, he was utterly useless during this upheaval.
Forgive Song Lan for the expletives in his mind. He didn’t mean to target anyone, but up to this point, the performance of the Moon God had been too disappointing. This was a criticism made from the perspective of a neutral and objective passerby.
"Those imprisoned here are just ordinary Believers. The Mutant defense team, Tribunal Guard Team, and ’Angel of Death’ have all been taken somewhere else."
After investigating the composition of the people at the gathering point, Lu Xiang whispered in Song Lan’s ear.
Though there were many Believers in Antigon, the vast majority were ordinary people without combat capability. The weapons forged by the Lunar Eclipse Sect using Spiritual Energy collectors were intended for the Church’s Psychics. In the hands of ordinary people, they were no different from replica models.
During the grim battle at night, Lu Xiang noticed a peculiar phenomenon, "All the fighters from the Lunar Eclipse Sect who mutated due to the moon’s influence were their combat personnel, but no member of the ’Angel of Death’ was affected. I suspect the mutation has something to do with Psychic Abilities."
Lu Xiang believed this might also be the reason the Barrosa Group segregated the ’Angel of Death’ and Psychics during imprisonment.
The whereabouts of the remnants of the Mutant defense team and Tribunal Guard Team were unknown, but as they were being escorted to the gathering point, he did see the ’Angel of Death’, including Yeying, confined in cages placed in the square.
The elite guards of the Barrosa Group treated them as if they were wild beasts, still snarling and baring their teeth at those outside the cages.
Reflecting on this, she asked, "Did you feel any discomfort yesterday?"
Song Lan’s opinion was crucial, as a master of Psychic Abilities among the Bug Swarm.
"Yes."
Song Lan also recalled the unusual phenomenon from last night, "It felt like a thousand people were chattering incessantly by my ear, almost giving me a cerebral hemorrhage."
Lu Xiang did not experience these symptoms at all.
Fortunately, by the next morning, Lu Xiang had figured out the reason, and the murmurs beside his ear had stopped with the end of the war and the extermination of the mutants. Otherwise, he really feared he might have blown up the moon above their heads in a fit of rage.
That was a close call.
Song Lan leaned against the window, looking up at the sun that was hiding behind the clouds, the trouble-making moon having now disappeared without a trace.
He shifted his gaze toward the Barrosa Group’s elite forces lined up in the distance, inadvertently revealing an admiring look—he had witnessed their battle with the "Angels of Death" the day before. Astonishingly, these "tin can" commanders had managed to best their opponents through one-on-one and even one-on-two encounters. This was nothing like the genetically modified soldiers they had met in Kansariel.
This explained how Yeying had been "arrested and brought to justice" by the Barrosa Group.
From snippets of the elite troops’ conversations, Song Lan overheard them referring to those commanders with the supercharged systems and thermal cutting blades installed as Legion Commanders, with evident respect.
In fact, even Lu Xiang had no idea how the Barrosa Group had managed to get their hands on the supercharged system technology, which the United Government considered a secret, much less how they had applied it to exoskeletal armor.
The technology they currently possessed had far surpassed the United Government intelligence department’s understanding of them.
She couldn’t gauge how powerful these Legion Commanders might be, or whether they could rival the United Government’s Five Stars or even Six Star rescuers, as they had clearly been holding back during the battle with the "Angels of Death."
Meanwhile, Song Lan was pondering another issue.
We need to find a way to introduce some talents like these to the Bug Swarm. Besides their formidable combat capabilities, the sight of these Legion Commanders wielding the thermal cutting blades as they move through the battlefield is just too cool. As a hot-blooded man, it’s hard to turn down the opportunity to don a custom-made exoskeleton armor and serve the Empire.
Even though Song Lan wasn’t sure if the Barrosa Group had established an empire or not, that didn’t stop him from coveting those elite soldiers clad in silver-white armor.
Then, a grand figure stood before him.
This steel giant, towering over two meters tall, faced him through the window. Her height was modest compared to others in the elite force, but the way the soldiers treated her left no doubt that she must be one of the Legion Commanders.
The Barrosa Group’s emblem of a gun and rose was emblazoned on the chest of her silver-white exoskeleton armor, and as Song Lan moved closer, he noticed a "Ⅲ" mark beside the emblem.
This must signify that she was the Legion Commander of the Barrosa Group’s Third Legion.
"You, come with me."
The Legion Commander, under the helmet, issued a command with a cold, synthetic voice to Song Lan, who was locked in eye contact with her.
"Me?"
Song Lan paused, then squeezed out a thin smile, "Report, Commander, I was just watching the sunrise. I don’t think that’s necessary."
He was in a good mood and didn’t want to get into any kind of physical altercation with these steel giants.
From a non-confrontational standpoint, he sincerely believed that the elite forces should fully enjoy the joy of victory, rather than putting themselves and the entire force in a relatively dangerous position.
"I’m not asking for your opinion."
The unmistakable voice came through the helmet once more.
Song Lan and Lu Xiang exchanged looks, with no choice but to head toward the door. The Legion Commander noticed Lu Xiang’s motion to follow and issued a warning, "You stay here."
