Chapter 577: Chapter 577: Why Does The Bishop Rebel?_1
Lu Xiang quickly realized that Yeying had no relevant knowledge whatsoever.
But this wasn’t surprising, after all, the Angels of Death from the Lunar Eclipse Sect had been sent into the "mining pits" since their earliest memories and had long been isolated from human society thereafter, guarding the safety of the Spiritual Energy seal.
Perhaps the Archbishop Helifis didn’t want her elite assassin squad to know too much.
Fortunately, she didn’t have to worry about the Church’s Angels of Death falling into the troubles of puppy love, though they indeed had the appearance of angels. However, in the eyes of the believers, they were grim reapers who would show no mercy, and it was probably only in romantic fantasy stories that warriors would be willing to fall in love with them.
Yeying listened very carefully.
This trip to District Seventeen made her realize that there were still many things about this world that she did not know.
However, she showed little interest in the romance mentioned by the leader of the Bug Swarm, especially the overly intimate actions the other party mentioned. In that situation, it would be hard for her to guarantee she wouldn’t think about biting them.
But she did understand two things:
Lu Xiang was the same as her, a female.
It wasn’t suitable for her to have too many intimate interactions with Song Lan.
And it was almost half an hour after staggering into their room that Yeying finally belatedly remembered the actual reason she came looking for Lu Xiang and Song Lan—"Father Delari was wronged; he did not commit heresy!"
She wanted to share this good news with them as quickly as possible, since Father Delari was one of the closest individuals to her within the Church.
"What’s the situation outside now?"
Song Lan buried herself in the blanket, leaving only her head exposed.
It had been over half an hour since the trial had ended, but there was no sign of the believers returning to the hotel. The place remained eerily quiet.
"When I came back, they had surrounded the Tribunal!"
The trial of the heretic had not ceased because of Father Delari’s phoenix-like rebirth. Instead, the focus had shifted to the Tribunal and the sinner Aige.
Now it was no longer an issue of control in the "mining pits," but they believed Aige must pay for the sin of burning thirteen innocent souls to death.
They proposed tying Aige and his minions to the stakes as well, to let them experience their bodies being consumed by the hellfire until nothing was left.
Song Lan inside the blanket shook her head continuously.
The teachings endorsed by Father Delari had completely fallen on deaf ears among these believers. He now suspected these zealots, blinded by their fanaticism, were simply looking for any excuse to enjoy the sight of people being burned at the stake.
If Song Lan were their Father God, he was sure he would be driven to a brain hemorrhage by them.
Fortunately, he was just a bystander and could witness all that was happening in Antigon with the attitude of someone watching a drama unfold.
"How long have they surrounded the Tribunal?"
"It’s been roughly half an hour by now."
"What about Father Aige? What’s he said?"
"Let me check..."
Yeying was a woman of action. She leaped straight out of the hotel window, and within two minutes, she brought back "frontline consultation" to them, "They say Father Aige is a coward, hiding inside the Tribunal and not daring to come out."
On the other hand, the Tribunal was an internal law enforcement body of the Church; they were equipped with the church’s most sophisticated weaponry. Until the Archbishop personally gave the order, no one would dare to rush into the Tribunal to drag Aige out and send him to the execution ground. According to doctrine, only the Archbishop had the authority to dispose of the Chief Judge.
So the current situation was that the believers were spluttering with verbal attacks outside while reviling Aige’s actions.
But as far as Song Lan was concerned, the force of their verbal condemnations was on par with keyboard warriors on the internet forums of the United Government, unable to bring about any change to the status quo beyond venting their emotions.
And chances were Aige himself might not even have heard the curses of the believers.
"If nothing unusual happens, your Father Aige has probably already taken his belongings and fled by now."
"He’s escaped!?"
Yeying became anxious all at once.
Although in principle she should await orders from the Archbishop, in her heart she supported the execution of Father Aige, the heretic. For power and influence, he not only framed and murdered thirteen innocents but also was the one who had sent the esteemed Father Delari to the execution platform.
If it weren’t for Father God’s wrath descending, they might still be in the dark.
Song Lan was right, Aige was a despicable baldy!
"He must not escape!"
Watching Yeying once again hastily leap out the window, Lu Xiang was close to speechless regarding this simple-minded young girl; she felt that Yeying probably couldn’t even distinguish who the real heretic was, simply believing it because more people said so.
Too naive yet bursting with action, it was no wonder she was the Archbishop’s designated candidate.
"Right, how did you know Aige was a heretic?"
Lu Xiang turned her attention back to Song Lan and asked. As the only one in the know, she was well aware that neither the spiritual energy storm on the outskirts of Kansariel Town nor the tide from the Sea of Souls that stopped the execution were "Father God’s" miracles as the believers of the Lunar Eclipse Sect thought, but rather a personal judgment of a bystander.
In fact, the arguments of both sides made sense, and until now, they still did not know who the murderer of the saints was. In her view, Father Aige’s accusation was more likely due to the framing and slandering amidst the chaos for power, not necessarily the mastermind behind the saints’ assassination.
"I don’t know either."
Wrapped in the warmth of his bedding, Song Lan relaxed a lot.
Now he was to become one with this temporary haven, and before daylight tomorrow, no one would be able to drive him out.
"You don’t know?"
Lu Xiang repeated in surprise, before asking, "Then you just saved Father Delari?"
"This was a bluff on Aige, testing his resilience."
This explanation made Lu Xiang’s vision go black; she had never imagined that the miracle-like scene was backed by a reason that was shockingly simplistic.
And indeed, Song Lan had come up with a convincing rationale, "If Aige were innocent, he would face Father Delari in debate before ’Father God.’ But he didn’t even have the courage to face ’Father God’ and fled faster than anyone else – a clear sign of lacking resilience."
Over the past few days, he had also been exposed to some of the doctrines of the Lunar Eclipse Sect.
Among them, they believed that "Father God" was an omniscient and omnipotent being. Regardless of how just the believers’ words seemed on the surface, "Father God" could see through to their innermost true thoughts.
It turned out that Aige only wanted to leverage the chaos to eliminate his rivals and make the Church a place where only his voice prevailed.
"Then who do you think is the real culprit behind the destruction of the spiritual energy sealing?"
"Haven’t you noticed that a key figure has been missing ever since we came here?"
"Are you referring to the Archbishop?"
Lu Xiang immediately grasped Song Lan’s meaning.
According to Yeying, Archbishop Helifis was occupied with major and minor matters of guarding against a mutant invasion and thus temporarily had no time to meet them.
Yet, with such turmoil happening right under her nose and believers already surrounding the Tribunal, the prolonged absence of the Archbishop started to seem intriguing.
Song Lan posed his suspicion, "Is Archbishop Helifis even in Antigon now?"
"So you’re saying you incited Yeying to pursue Aige."
Lu Xiang suddenly realized.
Once the heretic Aige is caught and brought back to Antigon with "evidence in hand," even with a million reasons, the Archbishop would have to show herself.
