Chapter 569: Chapter 569: More Biomass_1
Dr. Bai Zhu could never have dreamed that a single sentence she recorded to ease the soldiers’ suffering would become a sanctuary deep in the hearts of thousands of soldiers.
Essentially, this was nothing more than a broadcasting device built into the bodies of the "battlefield doctors" when the medical squads mutated, but it was this tender concern that made the United Government’s despairing men shed tears of relief.
At least, it gave them a glimmer of hope for survival in the war for the first time, even though this hope was brought to them by a group of mutated creatures.
They had no idea why their amputated limbs were reattaching themselves to their bodies, not to mention the severe puncture wounds that healed in just a few seconds.
This insect squad, self-proclaimed "Ms. Doctor," came and went like the wind, burrowing back into the walls and ground after healing their wounds, and it wasn’t until the building quieted down once more and the recuperating soldiers mused over their experience that they were surprised to find—the overwhelming visual impact aside—the healing process wasn’t unpleasant at all, but rather... somewhat comfortable and nostalgic.
That’s right.
You might not believe this, but they even began to miss the feeling of being "embraced" by those giant insects.
And as they followed the footsteps of the insect squads to look outside the building, they saw the sky full of flying creatures and the city’s surface ripped open by emerging giants, with endless swarms of bugs pouring out from their massive bodies.
Yet the bugs seemed to have no interest in the surviving factions of the Expeditionary Army gasping for life inside the buildings, but rather, in the mutated creatures that were scattered throughout the city.
In front of the relentless bug swarm, those foes which seemed invincible to them were completely overwhelmed in an instant, a bizarre sight that made many soldiers who witnessed it pinch themselves.
Mutated creatures... fighting amongst themselves?
The more insect-like mutated creatures that appeared later clearly lacked interest in them, and there were even sightings of bat-like flying creatures deeming the remaining Expeditionary Army troops on the ground too cumbersome, picking them up by their exoskeletal armor’s arms with claws, and transporting them to the safety of top of buildings.
This dramatic scene led the Expeditionary Army to the same question unanimously:
Who are they? Why have they appeared here?
This unusual spectacle also grabbed the attention of the United Government, who, despite exhausting their intelligence networks, couldn’t fathom where this apparently benevolent group of mutated creatures had come from. After heated discussions, they could only chalk it up to the machinations of the Lunar Eclipse Sect and the Barrosa Group.
Meanwhile, inside a building in the city, Lu Xiang and Song Lan were dealing with the cleanup of the urban battleground.
Occupying the city was just the first step in the bug swarm’s strategy, and to preserve as much of the Expeditionary Force’s living strength as possible, they would need to clear a path between various cities in the Neutral Country over the next few days, allowing the other surviving Expeditionary Army troops to safely retreat to the rear.
"As you predicted, the battle is indeed moving toward small-scale encounters within the city,"
Lu Xiang said.
Before they set out, the Devourers had mutated and hatched several elite squads specialized in small-scale combat in accordance with the strategy laid out by Song Lan.
She always felt that Song Lan could become an excellent battlefield commander, provided that he truly focused on these matters instead of lying on the sofa and wasting time with the TV on as soon as he got home from work.
She had no doubt that if Song Lan were willing to further his studies at the Command Academy, the United Government would gain a true battlefield commander in the future.
But the proactive Song Lan ultimately existed only in the imagination of others.
In his own words, as fate had granted him powerful psychic abilities, it also covertly transformed him into an utterly lazy person.
However, Lu Xiang always believed that this was just an excuse for Song Lan’s lack of effort.
Just like now, as she stood by the window, watching the bug swarm march toward victory in the war, while Song Lan, the commander, stripped off his exoskeletal armor and threw himself on the bed as soon as he learned that the bugs had gained the upper hand.
This might just be the most exasperating thing about this Dumb Bird.
Because once she lay down on the bed too, that guy would immediately make up some excuse to get up.
"You should know one thing," Lu Xiang said. "Ever since we arrived in the territory of the Third Neutral Country, our Devourer has been in an excited state, and Medea conjectures this might be because it senses the presence of its own kind."
This was indeed an internal war among mutant creatures.
But the initial victory didn’t prove their Devourer to be stronger than the opponent’s.
The monsters that emerged from the "mine" swept through the entirety of the Third Neutral Country, and this was merely one of the cities farthest from the "mine"; moreover, according to the intelligence they had gathered along the way, the main force of this "Wild Devourer" currently seemed to be concentrated in the core cities of the Third Neutral Country, attempting to take the fortress of the Lunar Eclipse Sect.
Although from the current situation, a delicate balance had been formed between the mutant creatures, the Lunar Eclipse Sect, and the Barrosa Group, the reality was that the mutant creatures emerging from the "mine" not only trapped the Lunar Eclipse Sect in the core cities but also intercepted Barrosa Group’s Cavalry outside the border.
"The majority of this mutant creature army consists of infected citizens and fierce creatures commonly found in the radiation zones, but behind the front-line troops, it seems to incubate an elite unit based on the needs of the battlefield, conducting surprise attacks or decapitation strikes behind enemy lines."
Up until now, the Expeditionary Armies in various cities have witnessed more than two types of elite units.
There are suicide squads covered with substances that can cause violent explosions and can rapidly tunnel under the ground.
There are digger worms with sharp claws and acid, lurking underground to ambush landing troops.
Beyond these elite units, even the regular mutant forces are able to mutate modestly against the Expeditionary Army’s weapons, making it difficult for electromagnetic rifles to inflict fatal damage on them anymore.
"During the recent battle, the Devourer collected sufficient biomass for us to establish a defensive line in this city."
This exactly demonstrated the way of war between Devourers.
They seize each other’s biomass, compress their opponent’s living space, and the losing side eventually becomes nourishment for the victor.
Lu Xiang’s foreboding feelings were being confirmed one by one.
The Barrosa Group’s genetically modified soldiers, the Lunar Eclipse Sect’s conversion of faith into spiritual energy, the unknown Devourer hidden deep within the "mine," and the festival itself.
Although this expedition didn’t actually deploy the United Government’s elite units, it unintentionally revealed something.
The prolonged infighting between the Innovator Faction and the Conservative Faction made them neglect changes in the outside world; their current intelligence network was no longer sufficient to support them in understanding all potential threats, and this very expedition was a microcosm of the long-standing struggle between the two factions.
Even when faced with external threats, the factions within the United Government couldn’t trust each other.
The ones paying the price for all this were the Expeditionary Army, sent to the front lines without understanding the true situation.
Perhaps a war that could truly threaten the existence of the United Government itself is about to arrive in the near future.
Lu Xiang withdrew her gaze from the distance, all her worries dissipated the moment she saw Song Lan lying on the bed in a spread-eagled position.
This guy always managed to precisely destroy any tense atmosphere.
In the face of the looming crisis that might engulf the entire United Government, Song Lan’s approach was to look at her with innocent eyes and with a "none of my business" attitude, he positively and optimistically dealt with everything unfolding before him.
"Comrade Song Lan," Lu Xiang’s eyelids twitched violently a few times, "could you please pay some attention to the direction this battle is taking?"
"The Moon God will guide your path... oh, wait, that’s not right," Song Lan coughed lightly and corrected himself, "The Bug Swarm will rise!"
