Chapter 563: Chapter 563: Master of Communication_1
The following day.
Before dawn had broken, the fully equipped Volunteer Army of the United Government set out on their expeditionary journey.
Citizens who had not enlisted also flocked to the streets, gathering to bid farewell to the gigantic war machines as they departed the city skies. This unprecedented spectacle filled their hearts with a rare sense of pride in being residents of the United Government.
By nightfall, this mighty Expeditionary Army would arrive at the outskirts of the Neutral Country. As the first contingent to reach the battlefield, they would launch a surprise attack on the Neutral Country from three different directions, alongside the Expeditionary forces from districts fourteen and twelve.
Drop pods would enable them to bypass the easily defended and hard to attack terrain, directly infiltrating into the city’s interior.
This was a landing method fraught with considerable risk.
If routed, the soldiers deep within the city would find it exceedingly difficult to withdraw to safety.
However, to quote the Chairperson of the Council’s pre-battle mobilization speech, this was a campaign with only success and no failure. It not only demonstrated the military might of the United Government but also their resolve to secure victory in the war.
The primary enemy in this expedition were the bugs, but before departure, the Expeditionary Army received a thought-provoking order—if they encountered local resistance during the war, including from civilians, they were authorized to shoot to kill any resisters.
Those with some political acumen could readily discern the deeper implications of this command.
Once the locals of the Neutral Country were drawn in, the expedition would morph from a "bug eradication war" into a war with the Neutral Country itself.
Arranged by the Ragus Foundation, Song Lan and Lu Xiang boarded an airship named "Eye of the Federation," a marvel of military technology replete with heavy weaponry such as plasma cannons and particle beams. Trailing behind the Expeditionary Army, they had a bird’s-eye view of the entire transport fleet from district seventeen.
This was a product of the Foundation’s military tech, with a mission distinct from that of the Vanguard forces on the front lines. Its primary duty was to loiter outside the borders of the Neutral Country, observing the direction of the battle and, when necessary, striking the city’s surface with heavy firepower.
The Ragus Foundation dispatched their most elite intelligence agents and battlefield observers.
Lu Xiang estimated that once the Vanguard had gathered sufficient intelligence about the city’s interior, the United Government would deploy their mechanized units. At that point, the war would truly commence.
Yet, it seemed that the elites of the United Government did not welcome their arrival.
Perhaps, in their eyes, these local Law Enforcers had boarded the airship through nepotism, and along with Yeying, the two were relegated to a small conference room. According to the company’s wartime confidentiality agreement, they wished the trio to remain in this lounge until they reached the Neutral Country’s borders—if not necessary—and they were absolutely forbidden from approaching the combat command center inside the airship.
According to the agreement, they would eventually be deployed to a small town just outside the Neutral Country’s territory, along with the ground intelligence personnel.
Song Lan automatically ignored the other passengers’ attitude toward them, focusing his attention on Yeying instead.
Despite donning clothes like those of a "city person," Yeying’s behavior remained markedly out of sync with normal human behavior. The United Government’s dislikes toward them was likely due significantly to Yeying’s strange behaviors.
Ever since boarding the airship, she had been touching and looking at things like a curious baby. Had she not been sternly reprimanded, she might not have been able to resist her curiosity, possibly approaching the instruments she had never seen before and fiddling with them indiscriminately.
Furthermore, Yeying had a particularly bad habit.
Confronted with something she had never seen before, if it could fit into her mouth, she would habitually bite it first, seemingly her way of understanding new things.
That habit persisted until she found a flash grenade in the storage cabinet of the lounge. Biting into it with gusto scared Yeying so much that she curled up in a corner of the room, resembling a frightened little animal.
The flash grenade incident seemed to calm her down significantly and left Song Lan—who was caught off guard and flashed in the face—still suffering from ringing ears.
He sincerely felt it was a miracle Yeying had survived until this day.
He pulled up a chair and sat in front of Yeying, who looked up at him with wide eyes.
"I heard from the priest that you’ve been to the ’mine’?"
In order to avoid another incident where Yeying damaged items on the Ragus Foundation airship which could lead to them being ordered to compensate, Song Lan decided to deploy chatting tactics to divert her attention.
Yeying nodded her head.
But she seemed reluctant to talk about what happened "in the mines".
It was common knowledge that in a place filled with mutated creatures and brutal consciousness entities, nothing good could happen. Their survival was aided by the genetic drugs provided by the Barrosa Group.
The price of living was becoming monsters.
Thinking of this, Song Lan felt that the living conditions of Yeying and her kind must be far harsher than those of the students at the Purple Wisteria Academy.
Song Lan opened his own suitcase.
Unlike the heavily armed Expeditionary Army, his suitcase didn’t contain anything that could be construed as a weapon.
A few sets of clothes for changing, cold medicines, motion sickness pills, and disposable toiletries—anyone seeing this would take him for an ordinary tourist.
As for this, Song Lan’s explanation was that a true master doesn’t need any of that fancy stuff.
However, Lu Xiang thought that Song Lan was just being stubborn out of fear of revealing his poor shooting skills. If she were to make a power ranking for him, Song Lan with a gun would undoubtedly be at his weakest.
Song Lan took out a bulging plastic bag from his suitcase. Catching the scent drifting from the plastic bag, Yeying’s amber eyes suddenly brightened.
This wasn’t a figure of speech; her eyes truly emitted a faint glow.
Song Lan was a communication master.
Witnessing this scene from a distance, Lu Xiang held her forehead, although this guy always played his cards in unconventional ways, his ability to extract information was likely no weaker than the elite of the United Government’s intelligence department—just like now, a meat bun successfully captured all of Yeying’s attention.
"I’ve always been curious, what rewards will the winner of the festival receive? Like a hefty sum of prize money, or perhaps a promotion to some higher level of life form?"
Holding the meat bun, Yeying contentedly popped it into her mouth.
After gulping down the entire bag of meat buns and licking her lips with relish, she finally answered the question Song Lan had asked earlier, "The one who wins the festival will return to the embrace of Father God."
"Return to the embrace of Father God?"
"It is the greatest blessing,"
Yeying said earnestly.
"But what good is that to us?"
The scene of Song Lan leading the conversation gently gave Lu Xiang a strong sense of déjà vu—if one were to ignore the content of their conversation, it almost looked no different from feeding a small animal.
"Good?"
Song Lan’s question left Yeying puzzled.
Wasn’t returning to the embrace of Father God the greatest benefit?
It’s like a child who has been wandering outside finally coming home, back to their true family.
But considering that the clan led by Lu Xiang might not know about the deeds of the Moon God, Yeying explained in simpler terms, "Father God will share power with the victor, and will make him His emissary in this world."
