Chapter 533: Chapter 533: Who is the mole?_1
Upon learning that a student had attacked an AI guard and escaped from the campus, the teachers at Purple Wisteria Academy immediately took action.
Specifically, they made no outward moves but took Xinya, who had happened to witness the scene of the incident, to the "Interrogation Room" in private.
In fact, Song Lan didn’t know where that was, but the facilities there and the way the teachers asked questions made him associate them with an interrogation room, and the methods used were far more terrifying than those of the Law Enforcers department.
During an interrogation, Lu Xiang employed psychological tactics to break down the interviewee’s inner defenses, whereas Purple Wisteria Academy used some more high-tech methods.
Xinya was taken to a dark, cramped room where, under the teacher’s instructions, she compliantly sat on a chair that resembled an operating table.
Immediately after, straps fastened her arms, calves, and ankles to the chair, her eyes were forced open by a device making it impossible for her to blink, and her tears inevitably flowed. The teacher skillfully operated the equipment corresponding to the restraint chair—it was a slender needle, which after careful adjustment, aimed directly at Xinya’s pupils.
Song Lan did not know if these devices were also supplied by a company within the Ragus Foundation.
Although it was an interrogation, they seemed to not need to communicate to get the answers from Xinya.
They only needed to puncture her pupils with the needle, which would allow them to know Xinya’s deepest and most genuine thoughts through the activity in her brain.
This didn’t appear to be Xinya’s first experience with such treatment. Faced with a procedure that would make onlookers shudder, she remained impressively calm, did not plea for mercy, and just waited silently as the needle slowly approached her.
Song Lan could not bear to watch and had to cut off his Spiritual Energy.
The perception effect of interference-type Spiritual Energy was so detailed and penetrating that he felt as though the needle had pricked his own eyes.
"You’re right, there’s definitely something wrong with this school."
After cutting off his Spiritual Energy, Song Lan turned pale, feeling he must be cursed. Every time he used his interference-type Spiritual Energy for perception, he would see something terrifying or unsightly. He was now seriously considering, for the sake of his mental health, whether he should disable this function of his Spiritual Energy in the future.
Xinya’s response to the "Interrogation" was certainly surprising, but what puzzled Song Lan the most was why the school let the perpetrator who attacked the guard go unpunished, while capturing the reporter and interrogating her with such severe methods.
About five minutes later, he received an answer to this question.
The teacher summoned Xinya, tied her to the chair with straps, and punctured her eyes with the needle, solely to confirm that Xinya had not been involved in this incident.
A problem that could’ve been resolved with just a few words still necessitated the use of such horrifying high-tech methods.
"I’ve heard of this device; it’s already been widely used in places like Military Intelligence Section Seven and the Special Cases Investigation Bureau."
Seeing Song Lan’s palpable unease, Lu Xiang offered reassurance, "It’s really not as painful as it looks, as scary as it may seem."
After saying this, they exchanged glances for a moment.
The silence in the room caused Lu Xiang’s cheeks to flush with warmth; alright, she admitted that her way of offering comfort indeed had a somewhat hellish tinge to it.
Observing Song Lan’s increasingly unnatural complexion, she kept to herself what she was going to say next—had Song Lan truly been taken away by the investigators of the Bureau on January 7th, they would likely also have used such a needle to probe Song Lan’s pupils.
If one were discussing it purely from a scientific perspective, the invention of this instrument greatly simplified the interrogation process. It detected unconscious brain activity, and with the right methods, one could easily obtain absolute truths based on the subconscious activity.
"Don’t these students understand how to resist?"
Heart racing, Song Lan also felt indignant about Xinya’s subsequent performance.
The results of the "interrogation" indicated that Xinya had no connection with the recent attack. After releasing her from her restraints, the teacher praised her with a smile, and Xinya, like a good student who had just been commended, left the "interrogation room" beaming with joy. Watching this scene, Song Lan had no doubt that, if he were to bring this up with Xinya, the girl would probably even educate him on how being pricked in the pupil with a needle didn’t hurt at all and that it actually helped the teachers save time and work more efficiently.
In response to this, Song Lan could only sigh in his heart.
Such a foolish child, blindly helping her exploiters count their money.
If it were him, he would never allow anyone to prick his eyes with a needle, even if it really didn’t hurt. He didn’t like the idea of someone forcibly prying into his subconscious, which severely violated his right to privacy.
If someone did that to him, he would have to probe into that person’s heart to see what their true identity was.
"These students also seem a bit off. They appear excessively obedient to the school rules and the teachers."
And the reason for their compliance seemed rather subtle.
It didn’t look like the result of long-term fear and intimidation, but rather as if Purple Wisteria Academy had used some unknown method to alter their minds, turning the students into marionettes who unconditionally followed the teachers’ orders and strictly adhered to every school rule laid out by the institution.
In the meantime, Dr. Kulin was certainly not idle.
She promptly dispatched more personnel, but their purpose was not to go out and support the "troubled youth." Instead, they quarantined the dormitory where he and Lu Xiang were staying. Dr. Kulin sent "undercover agents" to live in the rooms to the left, right and across from their dorm. If they left their dorm late at night, the "agents" were likely to report back to the school at a moment’s notice.
Dr. Kulin did not trust them and even suspected that the attack and the blatant misconduct might be related to Song Lan.
This chilled the heart of Song Lan, who had selflessly shared the experiences of his friends’ sacrifices.
It wasn’t just because his sincerity was met with suspicion by the school, but also because he realized that the academy’s teachers seemed more concerned about how to rescue the "insider" than with anything else, apparently not caring about the safety of the "bad boys’" remaining teammate with support-type psychic abilities.
But in such circumstances, what could a support member of a squad possibly do?
After the artificial intelligence guard was attacked, the school authorities increased their personnel. This time, even teachers and instructors joined the patrol team, completely eliminating any thoughts of breaking through forcefully.
Not long after Xinya returned to her dorm, the "interrogation room" teacher—as expected—considered the "troublesome youth’s" teammate as the second suspect.
Although the support-type psychic had a vague premonition and attempted to avoid the interrogation by pretending to turn off the light and go to sleep, she ended up being coaxed down from bed by the teacher in the middle of the night and taken to the "interrogation room."
She was greeted by another equally dark and cramped room, with a similar chair inside.
But the interrogation machine was different.
Gone was the needle prodding into the pupil, replaced now by a more sophisticated-looking device. After the girl was bound with restraints, a metal exoskeleton-like helmet was placed on her head.
"What comes next might be slightly uncomfortable."
The teacher’s face still beamed with a gentle smile. He was very considerate and gave the girl a pill and a glass of water before starting the procedure, "Here, take this. It should help ease the pain a little."
