Chapter 502: Chapter 502: The Old Soldier_1
While Song Lan and Lu Xiang were discussing the bad woman, an emergency meeting in The First Region was drawing to a close.
The atmosphere inside the meeting room was tense and grim, with the director of the Exceptional Case Investigation Bureau and the head of the rescuer division both in attendance.
However, these high-ranking managers were being reprimanded by an old man seated at the chief seat, rendering them unable to speak.
The holographic projection displayed a series of names, along with the photos corresponding to each one.
Bills, Joanna, Executioner X, Deng Lun, T...
No one present was unfamiliar with these names.
Bills, an inconspicuous corporate man, had almost brought down three major companies by exploiting loopholes in the system; Joanna, a newcomer to the border city’s network supervision department, used her authority during her tenure to breach the United Government’s border network barriers, for a time allowing a massive influx of information from the "outside" into United Government territory; Executioner X, a seemingly insignificant middleman, became a nightmare for politicians, as no one knew how he managed to bypass tight security to abduct his targets from well-protected measures; Deng Lun and T, the mercenary mentor-mentee duo, once reached the rooftop of the Lionheart military tech building and obliterated the entire structure with a tactical nuclear bomb.
What they had in common was that before they made these astonishing moves, they were all insignificant figures who would not catch anyone’s attention.
They were merely numbers in the eyes of the Review Meeting, yet they committed extremely restless and unforgivable acts.
Guiding them from behind the scenes was "Justice".
Self-proclaimed as such, and even now, no one knows its real name, how it came into being, or anything else about it, everything remains an enigma.
And now, among these names, it appeared necessary to add Angle Saffire.
A former Three Star rescuer, a fringe figure in the Exceptional Case Investigation Bureau; before the incident erupted in the Seventh District, this name had no chance of appearing in the Review Meeting’s sight.
The old man with a head full of white hair sat in the seat of honor at the meeting, his left eye lacking a pupil, showing only the white part, with a horrific scar traversing half his face. He was dressed in a military uniform, his chest adorned with countless medals; the mere symbolism of those medals of honor was enough to make everyone else in the room feel suffocated.
He was an old soldier who had participated in the Third War, and since the establishment of the United Government, he had been present in every war fought abroad.
At this moment, this veteran of countless wars gazed at the images projected by the hologram, his right hand gently brushing over the scar on his left face.
This was the parting gift from "Justice", and to this day, just thinking about those names made the scar still throb with pain.
In fact, on the very day he was injured, the Review Meeting had offered him a variety of top-notch treatment options.
The damaged skin could be replaced with new epidermal grafts, and the blind left eye could take this opportunity to be replaced with a more convenient prosthetic eye, but he refused all treatment options, allowing this ugly scar to permanently remain on his face.
For him, it was not only a mark left by war but also an intangible bond between him and "Justice".
Just like now, he, from afar in The First Region, sensed the presence of the other party, at this moment the fate of the entire world focused on a young person named Angle Saffire.
The old soldier in his youth had never believed in destiny, yet as he aged, he found himself increasingly prone to fanciful thoughts.
Perhaps this was the bond between him and "Justice"; although there was no direct evidence, his intuition convinced him that this time "Justice" was coming for him.
"There’s no need for more words."
After a long while, the old soldier said, "I must make a trip to the seventeenth district."
He had made his decision.
If fate did exist, now was the time to face the other party squarely.
A strong premonition guided him, and the secrets of the past that he had not known would gradually reveal themselves before his eyes.
"But, Sir Langinus, the Prosthetic Doctor said your body is no longer fit for combat."
"The Seventeenth District now has two Six Star rescuers stationed there, and we have also dispatched a large number of personnel; the situation is under our control."
"Our agents have found Angle’s whereabouts; just give us a few more days, and we will be able to arrest him and bring him to justice!"
"If you feel it’s necessary, we can try to persuade the Review Meeting to continue sending Six Star rescuers to provide support."
The old soldier’s decision broke the dead silence of the meeting, and the silent attendees all tried to dissuade him.
They were all people who had come through the Third War and had witnessed the prolonged development trajectory of the United Government. In their minds, Langinus existed like a beacon; even the name itself was one that the people of the New World had given him, following the texts from the Old World.
For a long time, Langinus had been synonymous with strength; just his presence was often enough to give them a sense of security.
But even the strongest warrior is ultimately human, and the sacred names from the texts could not grant the old soldier eternal life.
They too relied on the achievements of biotech pharmaceutical companies to be able to witness the scenery of today.
Humanity ultimately cannot withstand the test of time; every warrior has his day to age.
And right now was undoubtedly the worst time to sortie – even these laymen could easily make more rational judgments than Langinus.
"Six Star rescuers are our most important assets; do not treat them as consumables that can be replaced at any time."
Langinus halted everyone.
He had heard about the recent series of events and had become severely dissatisfied with the commanders who had made related deployments.
Because intelligence was incorrect, the United Government had needlessly lost Wild Bone, and although their espionage personnel had risked their lives to bring Wild Bone’s body back to the core cities, the absence of the central chip made it difficult for him to regain consciousness quickly.
Even more sadly, the people before him were still repeating these mistakes.
Indiscriminately sending Six Star rescuers to areas lacking intelligence support, putting them into dangerous encounters.
This was never their long-standing mode of operation.
"Angle Saffire is not the focus; even if he were defeated, others would emerge."
The authoritative voice silenced the room.
The senators’ faces varied, realizing that the old soldier had made up his mind; he knew more about his current physical state than anyone else.
This would very likely be the last significant decision he would make in his life.
"We regard them as demons, but after so many years, does any of you know how they came into being?"
