Chapter 483: Chapter 483: Safron’s Marvelous Adventure_1

This was the last long-distance bus of the day heading to Seventeen District.

At three in the morning, more than half of the seats on the bus were empty.

The few passengers who had paid for their fares leaned back into their seats and fell into a deep sleep; according to the itinerary, they would arrive at Seventeen District by eight o’clock the next day.

Angle Saffire had no choice but to take this bus at this time, as well as this mode of transportation.

The Investigation Bureau had officially issued a warrant for his arrest, and the bionic police guards at airports and railway stations had recorded this information. The moment he appeared at these places, an alarm would immediately be triggered.

Intuition told him that in addition to his former colleagues, there seemed to be someone else after him, and this person was much more dangerous than the bionic police guards and the Investigation Bureau’s agents.

This was an innate talent that not only always allowed him to get closer to the truth but also enabled him to turn peril into safety at critical moments.

In fact, after the United Government’s internal transportation routes were established, long-distance buses were almost phased out by the times. A large number of bus companies went bankrupt or switched to other businesses before the bad days arrived. Now there were very few long-distance buses left, whose main customers were either too poor to afford high-speed train tickets or, like him, had bounties on their heads or for some reason did not want to expose themselves in public.

Their business also included the nature of smuggling, as well as a one-stop service for helping wanted criminals leave Seventeen District and head to the "outside world."

The bus Angle had chosen paid great attention to the privacy of its customers, with different departure points each time. After booking a ticket online, they would send the specific departure point to their customers. To passersby, it was nothing more than an ordinary bus.

His goal was very clear.

As long as he could successfully reach Seventeen District, his situation would improve.

Even the Investigation Bureau would not easily meddle with the affairs of Seventeen District; at the time of the Void incident, for safety reasons and at the request of the Review Meeting, they had withdrawn all agents from the area.

Whether it was a temporary stay in Seventeen District or leaving to head to the "outside world," his options would be much more flexible.

Angle chose the seat closest to the rear door.

He could not fully trust this company; those who dared to operate smuggling business within the territory of the United Government had a complex web of relationships behind them. What made him more cautious was that the driver had given him an extra look when he was getting on the bus with his luggage, the gaze lingering on him for about five seconds.

After that, the driver had no communication with him throughout the journey.

After getting on board, Angle had been discreetly observing the driver. They waited for about a quarter of an hour before departure until an old man with a shaky gait finally boarded with the assistance of a cane, and then they embarked on their journey.

After he boarded, the driver had no more eye contact with anyone.

To catch this bus, Angle had not had a wink of sleep for two whole days. He thoroughly researched the route of each bus and only booked a ticket online anonymously after ensuring safety.

But now it seemed this journey would not be as smooth as he had anticipated.

Reality confirmed his hunch.

As the silhouette of the city gradually vanished into the darkness, an hour and a half into the journey, a violent collision woke the passengers from their sleep.

The shaking caused many people to fall to the floor, and some even suffered head injuries. Before they could understand what was happening, a grating scraping noise brought the moving bus to a halt.

The oncoming bright lights made everyone squint involuntarily.

"Who are you people? Don’t you know who my boss is..."

In the midst of the chaos, Angle heard the driver’s angry protest.

But his voice was quickly cut off by the sound of gunfire.

The gunshots intensified the panic within the bus, and screams echoed, breaking the silence of the night.

But Angle heard something out of the ordinary—a sudden burst of gunfire that came from inside the bus. While the driver was confronting someone outside the bus, a passenger behind him had shot him, and his artificial eye caught a glimpse of the gunman’s figure.

The gunman who stood up amidst the chaos was in the front row.

If he remembered correctly, that seat was occupied by the last passenger to board—the old man.

This shot was not a warning but aimed to kill. After the gunshot rang out, he no longer heard the driver’s voice. Instead, there were the sounds of the front and rear doors being opened and a chaotic flurry of footsteps as people boarded the bus.

Based on these details, Angle quickly assessed the situation.

Highway robbery.

This had nothing to do with the Bureau of Unconventional Investigation or the dangerous individuals pursuing him. He just had the misfortune of running into a Road Tyrant.

This was their typical tactic: have an inside man board the bus, and in the ensuing chaos, launch a surprise attack from within to control the situation inside the cabin. There was no more standard method of robbery than this.

This was the drawback of not having the United Government’s legal certification.

Once you left the city limits, no Law Enforcer would handle cases outside their jurisdiction.

He was just unlucky enough to stumble upon a robbery that was hard to encounter even once in dozens of journeys.

The blinding lights facing him went out, and as the vision of all the passengers cleared, they were greeted by the dark muzzles of guns and several individuals with their faces wrapped in colorful bandanas.

"Don’t make a sound, or I’ll kill anyone who does!"

A Road Tyrant near the back door threatened loudly. The back of the bus was hit hard, seemingly because most passengers chose those seats wanting to sleep undisturbed not to be bothered by incoming passengers.

"Hand over your valuables, or I’ll kill you! If you cooperate nicely, we’ll spare you."

The Road Tyrant raised his voice, shouting at the passengers in the back.

Lies.

Angle immediately grasped the reality of the situation.

Given the old man’s decisive actions, it was clear that this group knew to whom the bus belonged. Having chosen to act, they didn’t plan to spare anyone who had seen them.

Even with their faces covered, the passengers could identify them by their build, voice, and other details.

And Angle, sitting in the back row, unfortunately became the first victim. A Road Tyrant’s gun barrel was pointed at his head, "You first, hand over anything valuable... No, take off your hat first, let me see your face!"

"Bluster is a sign of insecurity."

The robber approached and in doing so revealed more details to Angle, "Your hand is sweating a lot, and your grip on the gun is unsteady... First time doing this?"

"Shut up!"

The Road Tyrant smashed his gunstock against Angle’s head with ferocity.

This too was a common rookie mistake.

Believing that they had controlled the situation, they willingly gave up the advantageous range of their firearms, putting themselves at a disadvantage.

Angle snatched the gun in a swift move, but he did not shoot towards the Road Tyrant at the front. Instead, he immediately yelled "Get down" at the passengers in the back row.

A barrage of gunfire filled the entire carriage until all was deathly silent.

After, the strong scent of blood permeated the carriage. Angle ducked behind a riddled panel for a while longer. When he cautiously observed the situation in the carriage through the bullet holes, he found all the robbers lying in pools of blood.

Even the old man he identified as the behind-the-scenes leader was no exception.

He checked one body after another, lying in the blood on the floor. Only after confirming that all the Road Tyrants were devoid of life signs did he return to his seat.

There it was again,

that bizarre feeling!
