Chapter 48: Chapter 48: The People Around Us_1

In Roger’s view, the position of a Negotiating Expert was the closest to criminals in the law enforcement system.

This "closeness" didn’t just refer to physical proximity, it also included emotional distance. The situations that required Negotiating Experts were often situations where a criminal has taken hostages or obtained some form of mass destruction weapon. Therefore, once negotiations broke down, even if the criminal was killed in the end, it would inevitably lead to irreversible consequences.

For them, it was normal to approach criminals unarmed. A slight misstep could even put their own lives at risk.

"For us, we must find the softest spot deep in the hearts of the criminals in the shortest possible time. Only then can we find their ’human’ side again,"

Roger said, "The last case I took over involved an employee from a chemical materials company who had taken his immediate boss hostage and filled the entire building with homemade explosives."

"I remember,"

Song Lan finished organizing his office supplies and opened his new computer. Since he couldn’t directly move the mainframe from the logistics department, he had to re-download several movies today.

He did remember the case Roger mentioned.

The case occurred a month earlier when he was still a slacker in logistics, and his peaceful life had not yet undergone the huge changes to come.

However, the scale of the incident wasn’t as light as Roger had mentioned. As soon as the news came, almost half of the law enforcement department went over. The level of tension was no less than when Chai Ke took High Prosecutor Angel Foster hostage.

The main reason for this was the chemical materials company mentioned by Roger was involved in the arms industry. If all the dangerous materials inside were detonated, it could flatten half a neighborhood.

Because of that case, Roger was commended at a large conference.

"After listening to the situation at the scene, I found something interesting. After taking his boss hostage, the criminal sent all other employees in the company out. A man prepared to die with his boss would consider his colleagues’ safety."

"That’s true,"

Song Lan timely responded, preventing Roger from a moment of awkward silence.

"This indicates that deep in his heart, he was full of contradictions about his actions. I made this my starting point and asked why he did it - his boss was colluding with external criminals and was secretly selling chemical weapons and explosives produced by the company to them at high prices. When the incident was exposed, the boss pushed all the blame onto him. So, I gave him a suggestion to expose all the crimes of his boss in public."

That’s how it was.

No wonder the criminal came out from behind the cover and walked directly to the window.

His actions gave the sniper a perfect opportunity, which the sniper didn’t miss, shooting the criminal in the head.

"No wonder you’re a Negotiating Expert; you were able to expose the criminal’s mistake under such circumstances."

"No,"

Roger shook his head, "At that time, I contacted High Prosecutor Angel Foster in front of the criminal. She first expressed sincere regret for the criminal’s experience on the phone, claiming that it was a negligence on the part of the Inspection Department and that she was willing to thoroughly investigate the smuggling of military weapons."

After saying this, Roger gave a self-deprecating laugh.

Because of Angel Foster’s tone, even he, renowned as a Negotiating Expert, believed her.

"This is something I found out later. At that time, the person in charge did not give instructions to shoot. It was the sniper who made the judgment on the spot."

From a judicial procedure perspective, the sniper’s choice was not at fault at all. Instead, he was commended for promptly killing the criminal.

"Two days later, the Inspection Department issued the final investigation results for the causes of the crime. The news announced that the criminal was guilty of abusing his power and had engaged in illicit transactions with external criminals for years. When discovered by his boss, he harbored resentment and thus planned to die with his boss,"

While talking about this, even Roger couldn’t help but laugh, "The criminal’s boss did not receive any punishment, but instead was commended by the Inspection Department for his brave exposure of his subordinate’s misconduct even in the face of danger."

From the moment he saw the news, Roger finally understood one thing:

The seventeenth district, or perhaps, this world, was much more magical than he imagined.

"But how do you know what the criminal said is true?"

Hearing this, Song Lan couldn’t help but break the strategy he had formulated, asking a question.

"Because when the criminal started talking about this matter, his boss underwent deep self-reflection, crying while begging for his forgiveness, even promising that he was willing to confess everything to the Inspection Department."

Roger said, "And all this was heard clearly by Angel Foster on the other end of the phone."

However, the boss who faced the media two days later was completely different. He condemned his subordinate’s dereliction of duty in front of hundreds of people and expressed his firm determination to expose evil even at the cost of his life.

"That night, the Inspection Department ’cordially’ invited me for a conversation under the pretense of commending me. During the conversation, they ’indirectly’ expressed their hopes for this matter to be turned over."

"Indirectly", referring to subtly mentioning his parents as well as almost all of his friends’ names and addresses.

For the Foster family, it was probably a simple task for them to find this information.

When he came out of the Inspection Department, he finally understood why the boss of the criminal could so easily shift all the blame onto his subordinate.

"Chief Song, the real shadow over district seventeen isn’t the criminals," said Roger, taking a pause, "I used to focus too much on the criminals and neglect those around me who are also stuck in the mud, unable to save themselves. Therefore, I at least hope to use everything I know to help those around me, and the counseling department is just the place for that."

He couldn’t contend with the Foster family, but at least he could choose how to use his knowledge.

"Knock knock, knock knock,"

The knocking on the door interrupted the long conversation.

"The person who needs your help is here,"

Song Lan showed a slight smile. Perhaps, this was the best way to end the conversation, "Your future work might be quite fulfilling,"

"Yes,"

Roger nodded.

Then, the law enforcer who entered the room saw Roger sitting backward on the swivel chair.

The law enforcer’s face visibly turned pale with fear clearly present.

"Ex-excuse me!"

The next second, he ran out of the room as if escaping, not even having time to shut the door behind him.

"Everyone, run! The counselor is the ’Death Negotiating Expert’!"

The law enforcers who had been watching outside the door paled in fright. In a just few seconds, the line that had formed outside the door had completely disappeared.
