Chapter 474: Chapter 474: Change_1
"I’ve begun to believe in destiny,"
Delta found this to be an astonishing realization. If Song Lan wasn’t just idly teasing her for fun that evening, then it would prove that under countless coincidences and with no prior knowledge, Song Lan had come to the "prison" to release them.
Suddenly she remembered something and added, "Of course, I’m not referring to that big guy who’s been brainwashed and even claims to be God... I’ve only heard about you through hearsay, but I know there’s a Consciousness Entity who might know something about you."
After understanding Song Lan’s true purpose, she became much calmer.
She liked the changes that were happening to Song Lan.
At least he wouldn’t be as capricious as the rumors suggested, ready to swallow her up if she made the slightest misstep.
"His destination is District 14; most of the rumors about you are spread by him,"
"And you?"
"Me?"
After a moment of thought, Delta spoke, "I want to leave this city; the people here are rather uninteresting."
The flames of revenge stopped at the campus bullying. After Isabella and others were severely injured and hospitalized one after another, her client numbers started to dwindle significantly. Staying in this city would probably yield no new gains.
After being released from the "prison," she fell into a state of idleness for a while.
But tonight, she had found some amusement for herself, "I’m planning to follow Jasmine."
"Follow her? Why?"
"The more powerful and influential the person, the more people despise them, yet she’s an exception."
Song Lan’s sudden intervention cut off their conversation before Delta could reveal her bargaining chip. "This goes against my life philosophy. I was just about to tell her, as long as she’s alive, I’ll always be there, shadowing her. That way, I won’t have time to look for new clients,"
Delta believed that if she said this, Jasmine would certainly agree to the deal.
"Oh, and by the way, if you wish, I can dissolve the contracts on our clients,"
Even though it would be against her reputation as a merchant, taking this step would allow her to gauge Song Lan’s attitude. She had a vague feeling that Song Lan’s personality had changed, and he seemed to have forgotten many things. Now was the perfect time to find out just what kind of person he had become.
"However, I must make it clear that once the contracts are dissolved, they’re as good as dead... Of course, I wouldn’t trouble my clients, but those they have connected with will certainly find every means to torture them, and they will find plenty of justifications to do so,"
In this matter, neither the corporations nor the families would disappoint. "They would take them away under the pretense of investigating my existence, using legal procedures and methods, and then casually hand them over to the Iris Consortium after interrogation is completed. For them, there’s no turning back in this one-strike deal,"
In Delta’s remaining memories, there were many methods of torture used by the United Government.
They even established special institutions dedicated to researching how to inflict pain more agonizing than death without actually taking a person’s life. Many high-level officials maintained that death was too lenient of a punishment for certain criminals. Merely depriving them of their lives was not sufficient to atone for their crimes, nor would it serve as a deterrent to those who might emulate them.
In the laws of the United Government, especially for the Conservative Faction, what was utterly intolerable was the rebellion of the "Common People."
If the "Common People" were even able to harm "aristocrats," it would be an unforgivable crime.
"Trust me, dying here would be the best outcome for them."
If she maintained the contracts, she was sure that as soon as her clients regained their freedom, their first act would be to ensure that this time, their deeds would lead to their true deaths.
Once you understand the nature of it, it’s actually a very simple multiple-choice question.
Die alone, or die for a cause.
Delta secretly pondered that if it were the Song Lan of rumors, he wouldn’t be facing this choice, for he would have killed everyone associated with Isabella before she had even found her first client.
..................
Meanwhile, at the school hospital.
It was only after confirming Delta had left that Jasmine’s companion reappeared in the ward once again.
For Jasmine, today was undoubtedly a day of overextending her Spiritual Energy, having repaired the school hospital she sat on a bed opposite Isabella for a short rest.
"What was that all about, why did δ suddenly run away?"
What was even more incredible was that δ, who had the upper hand, showed a panicked expression while fleeing, which made him feel as though some more dangerous enemy was approaching.
Though he waited in the shadows for nearly a quarter of an hour, no one came to the infirmary, and everything seemed to have returned to calm.
"I don’t know, but he probably didn’t have any ill intentions."
"No ill intentions?"
The young man questioned, "How do you know he had no ill intentions?"
He felt the mere fact of a threat more dangerous than δ was a significant menace; unlike Jasmine, he was not willing to expose himself before sizing up the situation.
"The fact that I can still sit here and talk proves that point."
Jasmine said irritably, barely managing to catch her breath sitting down, her teammate ran around in front of her and kept asking questions, but considering that he was not a Psychic, she patiently added, "If it weren’t for using Spiritual Energy to stabilize it, this building would have collapsed a long time ago."
Even though neither her nor δ’s Spiritual Energy was particularly known for Destruction, the building couldn’t withstand such a level of Psychic clash.
So despite the other Psychic’s energy being somewhat similar to δ’s, she firmly believed that the other party had done a good deed.
"You always trust others too easily."
"Stop, stop, stop, no preaching!"
Jasmine immediately stopped the young man’s lecture; she foresaw where the conversation was heading. He would make a big deal out of "secrecy" and "safety" if not stopped, and he could probably talk for half an hour on his own.
Although he was younger than her, he always rushed to be others’ teacher.
"With all that effort, you might as well go back and write a report, and submit what happened to the Review Meeting."
There were other matters in the hospital waiting for her to deal with.
For example, how should they treat these injured students?
To Jasmine, this was the most troublesome issue. They couldn’t possibly restrict the students’ freedoms forever; the moment they decided to make a deal with the "Devil," there was hardly going to be a good outcome.
The Iris Consortium would certainly not let this go; even a little investigation would surely reveal the full story behind this incident.
The young man sighed repeatedly but still followed Jasmine’s advice and left the hospital.
Jasmine finally had some peace and quiet.
She thought about the dossiers left by the Consortium’s former legal advisor; she could hardly think of any way to persuade these people to let go of their hatred, as convincing anyone to abandon their grudges without having suffered their pain was plainly insufficient.
Jasmine took out a badge from her inner pocket and toyed with it in her hand.
This was the highest honor given by the United Government to the rescuers, as well as a symbol of their identity.
The role of rescuer was originally created to reward those who had made significant contributions to the United Government.
The badge gleamed brightly.
Now, for what kind of United Government was she serving?
"Thump thump thump—"
Knocking on the door interrupted Jasmine’s thoughts, she looked up and saw Qi He enter the room.
"I don’t know if you have the time?"
Qi He disclosed his intention, "I have some things I’d like to discuss with you."
