Chapter 456: Chapter 456: Reflection of the Moon in the Mirror_1

Song Lan always felt that he had some inexplicable fate with the Saffron Family. Thinking about it carefully, the "concerned citizen" had appeared every time because of them.

Angle recounted his experience after being arrested and jailed, as well as the real reason he came to the Seventh District.

Over the years, he had been independently investigating a case in which the new director of Starfish Technology was one of the prime suspects. On the day the director was attacked and killed by a Cyber lunatic, he had been called away from his work post.

The outcome was the same as before. Whenever he was about to get close to the truth, the suspect would die mysteriously.

"Feels familiar, doesn’t it?"

Angle chuckled self-deprecatingly, "Professor Myles committed suicide, the teaching assistant died at the hands of a bionic person, and Hanna had an accident."

As for the mysterious visitor dressed similarly to him, he no longer wanted to probe into the person’s identity.

He might be the "concerned citizen," or someone else.

The future always holds infinite possibilities, and destiny will converge all these possibilities to a single point.

There lies only death and Nothingness.

"Including Hanna, that makes 42 murder cases, and you will never be able to find the results."

Angle’s voice carried a hint of pity for this person who was about to walk the same path as him. "Different causes of death, different murderers, some died in gang fights, some were murdered by competitors. Others were accidents, or sudden deaths due to illness. It’s impossible to link these cases together using detective logic. The only common thread is that they all ended up dead."

Angle felt more and more as if fate was playing a joke on him.

No matter where he was, no matter whom he had met, he was always under surveillance by a pair of eyes that would always pull the truth about to be unveiled back into the mist at a critical moment.

The only possibility he could think of was destiny itself.

It didn’t need to act personally to silently change everything from behind the scenes.

"Why were you following Professor Myles’s teaching assistant?"

Song Lan wasn’t interested in Angle’s philosophy on destiny. He wanted to know all the more practical answers.

After being arrested, Angle’s mental state deteriorated, and he no longer had the composure that came from insight into everything. Clearly, this famous detective had been defeated by fate, or perhaps by some enemy in his imagination.

"The teaching assistant...?"

Angle paused, then after a moment he said, "Right, him too, that fool who thought he could deceive everyone. I suspect that the glass bead he took held some important knowledge, which the Spiritual Energy Institute was trying to retrieve by all possible means."

If his deduction was correct, this must have been the teaching assistant’s bargaining chip to seek refuge with the Spiritual Energy Institute.

Unfortunately, this was a guess that would never be verified.

For the glass bead had been sent back to the Spiritual Energy Institute immediately, and the last person who had encountered it, Agent Hanna, had been declared dead.

All leads were cut off, and the truth once again returned to obscurity.

"10 minutes are up."

Song Lan didn’t give a direct response to the other party. In the distance, the Special Case Investigation Bureau’s search team had deployed, unleashing mechanical hounds to commence a thorough search. "Congratulations, your life as a fugitive has begun."

"Hold on, what are you planning to do?"

More than thinking about how to escape from the search team, this was what Angle cared about more.

As independent entities, how were they to break free from the shackles of fate and oppose it?

"That’s not for you to worry about now; you just need to keep running forward and never look back."

As he spoke, the handcuffs and leg irons turned to powder without warning and scattered on the ground. Angle gritted his teeth and ran with all his might in the opposite direction from the search and rescue team.

He hadn’t run far when he heard shouts and growls from behind him.

By the time he looked back again, the person dressed similarly to him had vanished without a trace. The growls came from the mechanical hounds being led by the agents. The cyberhounds’ electronic eyes were flashing red, similar to those abnormal bionic beings, but this time their attack was directed at the agents leading them. They bit into the agent’s calves and did not let go, toppling the unprepared agents to the ground and entangling with them in a struggle.

Meanwhile, at the prosthetic hospital, agents from the abnormal case bureau received astonishing news—life signs miraculously appeared in the body of Agent Hanna, who had been confirmed dead for over six hours.

Though the signal was extraordinarily weak, it was real.

The prosthetic doctor said it might have been the operating system in Hanna’s brain that saved her life. Despite her body being smashed to pieces by a billboard, her consciousness incredibly continued, showcasing Hanna’s astounding will to survive.

A new round of emergency operations commenced.

This left the agents tasked with retrieving the body at a loss since, according to the bureau’s protocol, they should have been on their way back with Hanna’s body by now.

After receiving the tragic news, a farewell ceremony was organized for the diligent Agent Hanna.

Anxiously, they waited outside the emergency room, anticipating the final verdict from the prosthetic doctor.

And in the chaos of the darkness, Hanna found a ray of light piercing through.

All her memories halted at the moment the massive billboard crashed down. She had imagined countless ways she might die.

Being murdered by a deranged criminal during an investigation.

Or inadvertently learning a company secret and being silenced by an assassin.

But she never imagined such a suffocating and meaningless death—being crushed by a billboard while making a phone call on her way home, which made her death seem insignificant and unbecoming of a three-star rescuer.

Hanna did not want to die.

So even though a voice in her head was trying to lead her into deeper darkness, she resisted, stubbornly lingering in place.

Until a streak of light, from an unknown source, tore a gap in the endless darkness.

Along with the light, other things penetrated this world as well.

Air, light and shadow, sound, pain, numbness...

And nearly obsolete bionic eyes, along with a series of error messages from the operating system.

This made her realize the unprecedented dire state of her body but at the same time informed her that she was still alive.

Hanna did not hesitate; she rejected the warnings in her head and resolutely ran toward the gap where the light came through.

Subsequently, all her senses became much clearer.

She could feel she was in an emergency room, surrounded by the noise of various machines, and the pervasive pain almost made her pass out again.

The damaged bionic eye only captured some blurry images.

The prosthetic doctors seemed to be busy around the operating table, manipulating something on her body.

The next moment, she saw the only clear thing in this blurry world—a person standing beside the operating table, wearing a black coat and a mask, simply standing there quietly while everyone around seemed oblivious to his presence.

This was someone who should not be in an operating room.

But in that moment, all of Hanna’s attention focused on this unexpected visitor.

"Hamill, Hamill Street..."

In such a state, uttering a single sentence took all her effort.

—"Go to Hamill Street."
