Chapter 454: Chapter 454: Wheel of Fate_1
Joyful times are always fleeting.
The class reunion ended quickly, and before leaving, Hanna excitedly exchanged contact information with Song Lan to inquire about the art of slacking off, based on the specific situation to follow.
She was very glad that she had come to the Seventh District to attend this class reunion.
Before leaving, she suddenly remembered something. After hesitating for a moment, her attitude this time was much more sincere than before, "Lu Xiang, I hope you take what I just said to heart; someone higher up has spoken about this case."
After she finished that sentence, Hanna did not give the opportunity for questions, turned around, and quickly blended into the crowd.
Alcohol is harmful!
As a public servant of the Anomaly Case Investigation Bureau, she should not have divulged this information to Lu Xiang and Song Lan, but she was very happy and quite drunk. Let’s just say... she let something slip without thinking.
"You two seemed to have had a great chat."
Watching everyone leave, Lu Xiang floated behind Song Lan like a Ghost, resting her hand on his shoulder and forcibly pulling him into an embrace.
Song Lan did not usually drink, but today, he ended up taking several swigs in the heat of the moment.
It turned out his alcohol tolerance was astonishingly low. After just a few drinks, his speech began to drift—not only in tone, but he even recounted his glorious achievements of matching wits with Hanna, his immediate superior, in front of her. If it hadn’t been for Song Lan’s own admission, she would not have believed that this slacker not only shirked his own duties but also led a considerable number of others to do the same.
He even exchanged contact information with Hanna at the end, to share tips about slacking off in private in the future!
"Tell me, Comrade Song Lan, is there anything else you wish to confess to me?"
"You’re different from those unscrupulous superiors; you’re a good leader who cares for your subordinates."
Although Song Lan’s speech was slurred, these were his genuine feelings. He had always believed that it was Lu Xiang’s lead-by-example and courageous leadership that filled the Seventh District’s Law Enforcers department with camaraderie.
The reason he had successfully slacked off so many times was that Lu Xiang did not apply her insightful abilities to harshly reprimand her subordinates.
"Is that all?"
Lu Xiang raised an eyebrow.
"And a good wife."
...
After a full thirty seconds, Lu Xiang finally said coldly, "You’re drunk."
Indeed, her entire face had cooled down, because if she hadn’t, it would have immediately revealed her current emotions and the fact that she was blushing. For a student who had studied emotional management, this was obviously unprofessional behaviour.
"Wow, you’re blushing."
However, this detail did not escape Song Lan’s eyes. He widened his eyes and exclaimed in surprise.
It was extremely rare.
Previously, whenever Lu Xiang attacked him, she had never blushed but instead always showed a triumphant expression after succeeding.
"Let’s go home."
Lu Xiang’s voice became even more indifferent. She avoided eye contact with Song Lan and began to contemplate another matter in her heart.
It seems that it was time to regularly stock up on some strong liquor at home.
Or concentrated alcohol sugar would do as well.
.....................
Meanwhile, Hanna, who had left the main group, was walking on the road back to her dormitory. For the sake of confidentiality in the case, her dormitory was not arranged together with Lu Xiang and others. The Bureau had prepared a living space for her outside the teaching district.
Alcohol had blurred her consciousness, but her vision was unprecedentedly clear.
She seemed to understand why Lu Xiang liked spending time with Song Lan; he provided these elites with a completely different kind of thinking.
Hanna raised her head and saw the sparse night sky with a moon and stars, beneath which the colorful electronic billboards glimmered. Even without the need for streetlights, these lights illuminated the path before her. It was the first time after so many years in the Seventh District that she seriously examined the city she traversed.
In the past, whether as a student or as a dispatched member from the Anomalous Case Investigation Bureau, she never had the time or the inclination to stop in her tracks.
Song Lan said to find the meaning of life.
Her life was not to live for her boss’s performance and the various targets of the Anomalous Case Investigation Bureau.
This theory didn’t sound complicated, but in the past, everyone around her, including her parents, constantly urged her to surpass everybody else, to carve out a bloody path from amongst thousands of people.
That way, the Anomalous Case Investigation Bureau could have a reliable agent, and in her parents’ words, she could become the template for "the child in someone else’s home," protecting their face while boasting to everyone about how she’d crossed the threshold of a three-star rescuer at such a young age and was now striving full force towards the ranks of a four-star rescuer.
Now, Hanna simply felt that taking a walk on the street late at night was pleasant.
The temperature in the Seventh District was as comfortable as ever, and if one looked carefully, one could see that it had always been a beautiful city.
She felt as if the air had become much fresher.
After walking a few steps, she suddenly remembered she hadn’t called home in a long time.
Glancing at the time on her phone, 22:13, it was still far from rest time for corporate people.
Hanna casually leaned against the wall at the street corner, looking up at the starry sky.
This time, when she dialed her mother’s phone, she wasn’t overwhelmed by the suffocating pressure she used to feel, instead, she relaxed and enjoyed everything she could see.
In the aspect of communicating with parents, Song Lan also offered her some advice.
For instance, she should lead the conversation, talk about her recent experiences, friends she’d made, or things that made her happy.
Hanna looked at the advertisement board shrouded in brilliance above her head, which was for a daily-use prosthetic hospital.
She quickly thought of a brilliant topic.
During an official duty, she’d encountered an interesting case where a perpetrator had altered their appearance to resemble a synthetic person to escape the bureau’s pursuit!
But then, Hanna saw something unusual in the details on the huge billboard.
The support structure of the billboard began to shake violently and made a grating sound. Soon after, the pretty lights burst into blinding sparks, which streaked across the night sky like fireworks.
Time seemed to freeze at that moment.
Hanna instinctively wanted to flee only to find she couldn’t move her feet at all. She looked at her ankles in surprise; although there was nothing there, it felt as though someone was gripping her tightly.
The support structure could no longer bear the weight of the billboard and, accompanied by the spectacular fireworks in the night sky, fell straight toward the ground.
She maintained the posture of making a phone call, watching as the massive shadow in the sky grew nearer until it filled her field of vision.
The call connected.
A career woman, who was just finishing up the department report in another city, answered the phone.
"Hello? Hanna, you..."
"Beep, beep, beep—"
The only response was a busy signal.
The call was disconnected.
"This child."
The woman glanced at the disconnected call on the screen and complained.
However, she did not dwell on this for long. It was close to the year’s end, and there was still a significant amount of work on her computer awaiting her attention. The business performance had been less than ideal due to impacts across all sectors, and perhaps after the new year, they would have to consider layoffs.
With this in mind, the woman casually pushed her phone aside and focused entirely on reading a new report.
