Chapter 448: Chapter 448: Illusionary Dream_1

As it turned out, Lu Xiang was someone who would not easily open up.

Despite repeatedly insisting that she did not need any psychological counseling, after returning to her apartment she hastily finished her hygiene routine and went straight to bed, burying her head under the covers.

Once Professor Myles’s death had been classified as a suicide, the remaining process would be managed by the college, and the dean was likely to announce the professor’s passing to the entire faculty and students at tomorrow’s morning meeting.

Both of them were well aware that if the suicide was confirmed, their actions today were no different from the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

Lu Xiang fell into a deep sleep, as if she wanted to temporarily cast aside everything through slumber.

Song Lan’s reaction was different from Lu Xiang’s; he lay in bed, not a hint of sleep in sight.

Professor Myles had ultimately made a decision that surprised him, on leaving the classroom, he had firmly believed that the professor would eventually get in touch with them, volunteering information about past events, and the truth behind the "receiver." He also tried to consider possibilities other than suicide, but to no avail.

Then there was Angle Saffire. According to his own introductory habits, there was absolutely no need to mention his surname. Everything he said and did since his appearance seemed to vaguely point to him. What was the relationship between this employee from the Bureau of Unusual Case Investigation and Dorago Safron?

His thoughts meandered into the night until a faint knocking at the door pulled him back to reality.

The always alert Lu Xiang was not awakened by the knocking. Song Lan rolled out of bed, slipped on his slippers, and went to open the door.

The visitor, with the intention of avoiding attention, was dressed in thick clothing and had their head covered in a hood attached to the outfit. They wore a mask and sunglasses on the bridge of their nose, carrying a familiar transparent plastic basket in their arms.

It was the assortment from Professor Myles’s desk, filled with glass beads of various colors.

"The professor said to give this to you before he died."

Song Lan recognized the voice as the teaching assistant’s, who sounded exhausted and seemed extremely weak.

Without waiting for Song Lan’s response, the teaching assistant thrust the plastic basket into his arms and then turned to leave, unwilling to engage in further conversation.

Song Lan inexplicably clutched the plastic basket, pondering the meaning behind Professor Myles’s actions.

One thing was certain, prior to today’s class on Psychic Abilities theory, they had never met; Professor Myles had no idea he even existed, and the exchange they had in class with the professor could not be considered harmonious, the result being both he and Lu Xiang were kicked out.

Therefore, it was not difficult to deduce that Professor Myles had likely entrusted the teaching assistant with the task of handing over the basket of glass beads to him in the 20 minutes between the end of the class and returning to his residence.

This was the last message Professor Myles wanted to convey before he committed suicide by shooting himself.

But...

What secrets could this basket of glass beads possibly conceal?

Song Lan lay back on the bed, took out a translucent black glass bead, and examined it closely before his eyes, but no matter the angle it seemed to be an utterly ordinary glass bead.

As a child, there was a time when he was engrossed in playing marbles, which cost a dollar each. After school, groups of kids would gather in the garden of the community to have intense marble competitions. It was hard for him to picture a hundred-year-old Professor Myles crouched in the dirt, playing marbles like a child and getting covered in dust.

These glass beads seemed more like collectibles.

But soon after, Song Lan remembered something the teaching assistant had mentioned at the crime scene. He had said casually to Lu Xiang that examining these marbles was a habit of Professor Myles when contemplating, and he was very explicit about the professor’s fondness for staring at the patterns on them.

With a realization dawning on him, Song Lan immediately poured out all the glass beads onto the bed.

All were solid colored glass beads, varying in shades, but without a single pattern on any of them.

Children who often played with marbles knew that despite their similar prices, the marbles were ranked based on color differences, including those with "mixed colors" that displayed patterns, which in his circle were usually considered the least desirable.

At this moment, in the vast plastic basket, not a single "mixed color" glass bead could be found.

If they had all been solid-colored glass beads from the beginning, then why did Professor Myles always like to stare at the patterns on them when he was thinking?

He didn’t think the assistant was lying; rather, someone had been to the scene before them and taken all the "mixed color" glass beads from the plastic basket, and these glass beads, perhaps, were the very things the professor truly intended to leave for them.

"Boss, wake up, Boss."

Feeling someone pushing her, Lu Xiang furrowed her brows and uttered an unintelligible grunt.

She had a dream.

In the dream, she found herself back in her student days, attending Professor Myles’s theory class. The classroom was as empty as ever. She sat in the front row, while the professor seemed to be discussing the connection between consciousness and the physical body.

At least that’s what the title on the slideshow suggested.

However, she looked carefully at Professor Myles, watched his lips moving, but couldn’t hear any sound.

It wasn’t just Professor Myles; it seemed as if everyone in the classroom had been muted by magic, leaving her alone in the entire world.

After an unknown time, the classroom suddenly began to tremble; with the intense shaking, the building collapsed, walls cracked, and a blinding light shone in through the cracks.

When her vision cleared again, all she saw was Song Lan’s somewhat concerned expression.

It took Lu Xiang five seconds to remember they were in the dormitories arranged by the academy, and that she had fallen asleep as soon as she returned yesterday because of Professor Myles’s death.

The sky wasn’t bright yet; it was the middle of the night.

That Song Lan was still awake at this time added a strange air to the whole affair.

"What’s wrong?"

Lu Xiang, bleary-eyed, spoke with a thick nasal voice.

"Do you remember this basket of glass beads?"

"Professor Myles’s glass beads... Where did you get them from?"

As soon as she recognized the object Song Lan was holding, her sleepiness vanished, because according to the academy’s procedures, these relics would be stored in Professor Myles’s spirit niche along with him.

If the academy found out that Song Lan had taken the professor’s belongings, he wouldn’t be able to wash clean of the scandal even if he threw himself into the man-made lake.

"The assistant brought them, he said this was the last task the professor entrusted to him, and I think it’s important."

Song Lan, faced with a difficulty, had to turn to Lu Xiang for help. At the scene, he hadn’t examined the basket of glass beads closely and couldn’t determine when the "mixed color" glass beads had been taken.

Luckily, he remembered that Lu Xiang, out of professional habit, had taken photos of everything on the desk as evidence, including this basket of glass beads.

"When we arrived, were there any ’mixed color’ glass beads in this basket?"

Although she didn’t understand why Song Lan was asking, Lu Xiang quickly pulled up the photos she took.

Song Lan looked closely at the photos and finally concluded, "Someone returned to the scene after we left and took all the ’mixed color’ glass beads."
