Chapter 427: Chapter 427: Polar Opposites_1
Father Bruno, based on his knowledge, conducted an analysis. He believed that a series of recent events had subtly altered Sector Seventeen. With the expansion of the website’s popularity and corporate involvement, the township had become a target of many. If one were to consider the intensity of faith alone, it would even surpass the Lunar Eclipse Sect.
After all, the population of the United Government far exceeded that of the Third Neutral Country. If this trend continued, the number of monsters spawned from people’s imaginations would only increase.
But the good news was that after hearing Song Lan’s description, Father Bruno thought that because so few people believed in her existence, her power was very weak. Moreover, since the staff of Starfish Technology’s observation department hadn’t had time to "supplement" her with specific settings, this caused her behavior patterns to be simplistic and unable to harm the human body.
At least in the short term, she could only frighten people with her terrifying appearance.
Before Song Lan could breathe a sigh of relief, he heard Father Bruno bring somber news, "The cold, sleep paralysis, and insomnia should be the effects of her appearance. In the coming days, she might enter your rooms every night."
"How can we get her to settle down?"
Hearing that a female ghost might harass his sleep every night, Song Lan was so scared that his hair stood on end.
"According to the Church’s scriptures, there are only two ways to completely eliminate such creatures," Father Bruno said. "One is to start at the source. If you eradicate everyone who knows and believes in her existence, she will self-destruct. In this case, besides eliminating all the staff of Starfish Technology’s observation department, you might also have to kill other people in the township..."
At this point, the priest paused slightly as he knew this went against the principles of Void Paradise, so he continued, "The other method is much more complicated. It was originally proposed by Father Abrah. This method counterexploits faith. As long as you make more people believe she has been destroyed, her existence will be erased."
The principle sounded easy, but it was extremely difficult to implement.
Belief is subjective, and even the adjudicators of the Lunar Eclipse Sect couldn’t detect what’s in a person’s heart. Therefore, external actions can only serve as the measure. But with these twisted creatures, any doubt or questioning in the mind allows them to continue existing and could even intensify their presence.
In known experiments, only seven monsters have been successfully eliminated by this method, and each process was full of twists and turns. Hence, people would rather herd these twisted creatures into the "Confession Room" to let them live and die on their own in abandoned mines.
"But this method is not a permanent solution. According to the information currently held by the Lunar Eclipse Sect, the longer these monsters exist, the stronger they become. By the time the high priests finally decided to confront this matter, the ’Confession Room’ had become a dead zone."
A squad composed of the Church’s elite only lasted less than a day inside before escaping in panic, with only two surviving members who not only lost their powers but also went mad soon after. The Church had no choice but to revoke their priestly status.
The "Confession Room" was once an abandoned mine.
The scriptures’ description of the mine remained from over a decade ago, and the stark reality was that even the Church’s higher-ups didn’t know what kind of monsters now lurked in the depths of the mine.
Indeed, Father Bruno’s many inspirations for the Void came from the "Confession Room," that abandoned mine which even the Church dared not touch, closest to the Void in the depths of his heart.
"You mean, they can evolve?" Song Lan asked incredulously.
"Of course, when they are invisible and unknowable, evolution accelerates. If you want to completely destroy them, you must act quickly."
Due to the Church’s initial decisions, the "Confession Room" had become a historical issue of the Third Neutral Country. Now, these twisted monsters had appeared in the town.
If not handled properly, they might follow in the footsteps of the Lunar Eclipse Sect and create a mine in Sector Seventeen filled with twisted monsters.
To this day, members of the Church are still studying these terrible creatures woven from negative human emotions, trying to understand the truth and resolve this historical issue. However, research findings are varied, with no definitive conclusion reached.
The most widely accepted among them is that these twisted creatures are related to the Devourers.
Before research on the Devourers began, humanity was utterly incapable of effectively receiving consciousness, beliefs, and imagination. Their existence is another facet of belief, and also entities that, to date, the Church cannot predict, comprehend, nor contend with.
Therefore, some people based on this theory put forward an idea.
Maybe if they eliminated all the Devourers, those uncontrollable twisted creatures would also dissipate like smoke.
But these ideas were quickly and strictly forbidden.
The Neutral Country is a nation founded on the basis of the Church, with all their power deriving from the research into Spiritual Energy, born out of the study of Devourers. They do not wish, nor can they afford, to give up everything they have gained from Spiritual Energy research.
Those scholars who ventured into the "Confession Room" to validate their theories have, without exception, vanished into the depths of the mines, never to emerge again.
Everyone realizes that the mine is a ticking time bomb, and perhaps one day those twisted creatures might crawl out and take everything from them, but the followers of the Lunar Eclipse Sect can only hope that the High Priests will find a path to the future before Judgment Day arrives.
Song Lan silently listened to Father Bruno recount the history of the "Confession Room" and the abandoned mine, inwardly sweating for the people of the Neutral Country.
And he also understood the nature of the woman in white.
As long as the idea that supports her existence does not vanish, no matter if her head is twisted off or she is devoured by a Guardian Spirit, she will only disappear for a moment. By the second night, she would return, possibly even stronger.
To put it simply, if he didn’t take action, the other party would disturb his sleep night after night.
Then you’re done for.
Originally he had taken a friendly and optimistic outlook, thinking that if she didn’t affect him and wasn’t aggressive, he would let her remain in the town to add to the eerie atmosphere. But her maddening behavior forced him to change his attitude.
He couldn’t even begin to imagine how malevolent a person must be to think of disturbing the rest of a busy office worker every night.
"Let’s go, Fengling."
"Hmm?"
Fengling, who had been squatting by the water watching the fish, turned her puzzled face upon hearing this.
The previously haggard and weak-looking Song Lan, who seemed as though he might faint at any moment, suddenly burst with energy. He even rolled up his sleeves, as if ready to set up a fight with someone.
Since she had met Song Lan, he had never been as fired up as he was today.
If one were to put it into words...
It was as if Song Lan had suddenly transformed from the King of Sick Leave to an overactive ape.
"Get ready to go back, we’re updating to a new version today."
"A new version?"
"That’s right, I’ve thought it through, it will be called ’Legacy of the Void 1.1: Death of the Woman in White.’"
