Chapter 401: I Never Brag_1

Chapter 401: Chapter 401: I Never Brag_1

That afternoon, seventeen residents who followed the website discovered an astonishing announcement.

Father Bruno, once resolutely xenophobic, had posted a recruitment notice for the Void Investigation Agency, stating they had found an abandoned habitable area in a small town at the border of the Void in District Seventeen, desolate and uninhabited. The Void Investigation Agency hoped to recruit some volunteers to settle there.

They had been glued to their computers to learn about the firsthand details of the Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical convoy hijacking, but instead stumbled upon an even bigger piece of news.

Only three settlers were sought for the first group, yet in less than half an hour after the recruitment notice was released, the backend received a couple of hundred applications.

"Don’t go, they want to snatch your kidneys!"

While someone was spreading panic, they quietly submitted several applications to reduce their potential competition.

The challenge of three people living in a town shrouded in obscurity and possibly infested with monsters was undoubtedly formidable. Bai Zhu, while sifting through the list of names, could never quite figure out whether these people were just making a ruckus or were truly tired of living.

Using an afternoon, they selected three people from the vast sea of humanity.

First was "Big Radish Head," who quickly became a celebrity on the website following his inadvertent venture into the Void, with people inquiring daily about his methods of entering the Void and his experiences within.

The second lucky audience member was named "Spicy Chicken," whose personal history stood out among the many street thugs. He used to travel frequently between District Seventeen and Twelfth Nation, engaged in trade and worked as a mercenary. After a friction with a gang "from the outside" during a trade run, he stayed in District Seventeen to prevent retaliation.

According to him, "Spicy Chicken" was a dish he had once eaten at a restaurant in Twelfth Nation, and he had remembered it ever since.

The last person, though called "Mayor of Sheep Village," actually had nothing to do with animal husbandry. In prior years, he owned a bar in District Seventeen, and upon first hearing rumors of the Void, he closed his bar and began to seek out information related to the Void.

He was the one who spread the rumors about "snatching kidneys."

Bai Zhu also found out that he had used some simple hacker software, obtained from who knows where, to send all unpermitted users a private message about a recent rumor in District Seventeen: a criminal gang luring people away to snatch their kidneys. To increase credibility, he even attached various images likely to trigger adverse psychological reactions.

Bai Zhu had originally planned to ban this individual to stop such unfair competition, but Song Lan prevented him after hearing about it.

He felt that this so-called "Mayor of Sheep Village" might be a business genius, and these tactics reminded him of Zhuang Chi.

Zhuang Chi had even used hacker software to browse their old Chief’s internet history in order to have them transferred to their department.

Bai Zhu thought he would need two or three days to select the volunteers, but, well, the caliber of netizens was just too uneven.

Besides these three, the other applicants were mostly summed up in three words—little thugs.

From these applications, one could see how District Seventeen was bustling with little thugs.

These local products were unsellable, and even Bai Zhu felt it was a pity.

To ensure the safety of the three, Father Bruno announced that two experienced "Adventurers" would be sent to protect them.

One of them was Fengling, who had just been promoted to a combatant of the Void Investigation Agency after a meeting, and the other was Song Lan, who happily thought to go home after the meeting but was intercepted by the leader of the Bug Swarm and forcibly dispatched to duty in the small town.

Song Lan often boasted of being a wise general, so on the surface, the combination of a scholar and a warrior seemed to suit the job requirements. But a more important reason was persuading the new mayor to vacate the town, which took Lu Xiang an entire afternoon’s strategic planning.

The poor new mayor had already begun to suspect everything. As soon as he heard Lu Xiang mention the name of the town, he suspected a gang might emerge from nowhere and blow the entire town sky-high.

Therefore, Song Lan carried an important mission on this trip.

No matter what complex scenarios might occur, even if the Rebel Army declared war, aliens invaded the United Government, or a meteorite struck the Earth, he had to ensure that the town remained unscathed; otherwise, before the new mayor could begin to realize his vision of developing the seventeenth district, he would collapse due to financial issues.

In order to alleviate the various problems currently faced by the seventeenth district, Lu Xiang went all out.

She also knew that after sending Song Lan to the town, they probably wouldn’t see each other for a week.

That evening, the volunteers, each with their own thoughts, boarded the bus specially arranged to ferry them. The bus was equipped with welcome packs for beginners that included a large amount of hand sanitizer, a thirty-day supply of nutritional injections, a set of hazmat suits, and a walkie-talkie for each person.

"Is this happening a bit too fast..."

The three were silent the whole way until Spicy Chicken finally broke the silence.

He hadn’t waited long after submitting his application when he received a reply from the Void Investigation Bureau, and they sent a vehicle to pick them up that very night. Now, with the dark and windy night around them, aside from the driver, there were only the three of them on the bus. Moreover, the way things looked, the bus was gradually leaving the urban area, heading towards the suburbs.

"It’s not really about organ trafficking, is it?"

"Don’t panic, the organ trafficking rumor was spread by me."

Sheep Village Chief used his unique method to relieve everyone’s tension, "Who would dare engage in organ trafficking at a time like this? Haven’t you heard? The new enforcer chief suddenly inspected a small clinic and caught them in the act of removing kidneys. He beheaded them on the spot."

"Really!?"

Although the organ trafficking incident was over, the atmosphere in the bus had grown even more tense.

"Of course it’s true. The one who was beheaded was a friend of mine, and I helped put his head back on later."

The new chief of the Law Enforcers was so brutal?

Both shuddered at the thought; no wonder the Foster Family had fled the seventeenth district looking rather sheepish.

"Why did you sign up?"

After becoming somewhat acquainted, Sheep Village Chief casually asked.

Big Radish Head answered first, "I’ve been to the Void once before, I have some experience. An Adventurer tried to save me and got torn apart by monsters; I have to do something for him."

"Me? I was just joining in on the excitement, never expected to get picked."

Spicy Chicken said. He’d filled out a form on a whim after seeing a flood of applicants on the website. He who had never won anything in his life had "luckily" earned a chance to explore the Void.

After listening, Sheep Village Chief was somewhat disappointed, but he quickly adjusted his mood and said, "I used to run a bar and met someone from a company. Recently, he has been paying me well for information about the Void. We can sell him the intel, and if we can bring something out from the town, even better. Company folks are pretty rich and seem to enjoy being taken advantage of."

"Is that reliable?"

At his words, both perked up with interest.

The matter of the Void had thrown the entire seventeenth district into disarray, leaving most people struggling to find decent work. They hadn’t thought that they could make money off the Void and, moreover, it would be siphoning money from company people.

"Reliable,"

Sheep Village Chief guaranteed with a slap on his chest, "I never blow smoke."
