Chapter 396: Chapter 396: Everything You Fear_1
The internal board meeting of Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical was set for ten o’clock tonight.
After reading the briefing from Gray Farmar, they immediately realized the importance of this discovery and, despite being scattered around the world, went through great lengths to agree on a meeting time to quickly address the issue of Fengling’s recovery.
Just past ten, all the board members appeared in the preset virtual venue via holographic projection technology, but the initiator of the meeting was the only one absent.
Grey was a punctual man.
He was one of the veterans of Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical, and everyone present was familiar with his style.
After an uneasy wait of nearly five minutes, Grey’s image finally arrived, and without words, they understood the reason for Grey’s tardiness—his surroundings were in ruins, the walls corroded into a charred state, beyond recognition.
Grey appeared before them in a bizarre manner, half his body sunk into the floor, struggling in vain to free himself from the mire.
Before long, a somewhat familiar figure appeared before the board members.
Medea.
Grey had mentioned in his briefing that she was likely still alive, having somehow escaped the Hunting Team years ago.
But now, Medea looked nothing like the image they remembered of her; her pristine, translucent carapace stood in stark contrast to the blackened, dilapidated surroundings, and the pair of insect wings behind her set her apart from humanity, along with her amber, insect-like irises and the antennae hanging from her forehead—traits that told of her state over the years.
Horn Bug.
The board members looked at Medea but thought of another type of very common mutated creature.
"Medea..."
The elderly chairman called out her name; they certainly wouldn’t forget how this woman was supposed to die "outside" bearing the sins of human experimentation for the company, "I am glad you are still alive."
In fact, this was the first time Medea had directly met this man, who was said to be over 170 years old. He had founded Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical, survived the war that lasted over a hundred years, and lived until today.
The company had a professional medical team whose purpose was, as far as possible, to enable everyone present to live longer.
In the eyes of the company supremacists, these individuals had long transcended human bounds, becoming almost godlike in their beliefs, and she had once been among their many worshippers—just hearing directives from the highest level was enough to excite and terrify her, yet now, she stood before them in an entirely different capacity.
The old man said calmly, "Years have passed since the accident, and it was your selfless dedication that protected the company’s reputation. Now, I want to invite you back to the company as Chairman, to become a member of the board."
To become a member of the board was the ultimate dream for countless company personnel.
It meant that they would completely change their status, looking down upon the world in a superior position. The old man didn’t say a word, and a certain shackle in Medea’s mind seemed to have been gradually awakening, but soon, this insignificant power was consumed by the consciousness of the Bug Swarm, unable to stir any ripples in her mind again.
"You should be able to imagine the outcome of this."
Her hand lightly rested on Grey’s shoulder, and as his eyes widened in horror, his clothing began to flake off like wall paint, followed by his shoulder, the charred parts spreading slowly—a sight that made many members of the board gasp.
They couldn’t explain where this power came from; according to the company’s records, Medea was not a Psychic, and all the expensive prosthetics on her were corrupted by the virus.
They could only think of the force from the Void that Grey had mentioned in his briefing.
"Is this your revenge?"
Only the Chairman remained calm throughout, merely glancing lightly at the contaminated part of Grey’s shoulder before turning his gaze to Medea, "I thought you were a rational person. Even if you have lost faith in the company, you should understand how to make choices that favor you. Personal grievances only cloud your judgment."
In the face of this formulaic sermon, Medea’s eyes filled with mockery, and her face showed a mocking smile.
The unwarranted confidence of those in power at the company did give her a sense of returning to the past.
Before the meeting started, Grey had also attempted to give her the same patronizing lecture. In their minds, filled with self-importance, they must have imagined that after narrowly escaping death, she had been biding her time, all for the sake of revenge against the company.
Because for the vast majority of employees who were expelled from the company, or for ordinary citizens, this was very likely the driving force that sustained them throughout their lives. And such revenge almost always ended abruptly with them being simply executed by the "guards".
Medea never really kept her grudge against Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical to heart, and if it hadn’t been for Grey initiating the plan to retrieve Fengling, they might not have met at all.
But this might not be a bad thing.
According to their original plan, they needed a group of influential people to spread the news of her existence, and as it happens, all the members of the board meeting in the virtual venue were those with the highest positions of power within the entire United Government.
"What are you smiling at?"
Finally, a member could not hold back and questioned Medea.
If at that moment, Medea could not suppress her rage and accused them loudly of the injustice she had suffered years ago, it might have been more bearable for them. But her mocking smile made them realize that things were slipping out of their control; perhaps they had never truly understood Medea, and they had misjudged the situation.
"You’ve obstructed our venture, and I’m merely here to clear away some stumbling blocks."
The corruption on Grey’s shoulder was eroding faster and faster, soon swallowing his entire arm. He tried frantically to shake it off, but he couldn’t stop the spreading of the corruption and could only watch in horror as the charred substance spread over his whole body.
The entire process lasted nearly five minutes.
None of the board members tried to stop Medea or plead for Grey. In their hearts emerged an entirely unfamiliar emotion.
Fear.
This emotion peaked after Grey was completely engulfed by the corruption because they could clearly hear that his terrified screams had turned into a low growl. His legs, which had been stuck in the floor, broke free from the mire, and after regaining his freedom, he did not attack Medea, but instead wandered around the room as if he had lost his mind.
Grey Farmar was still alive but had become some kind of creature beyond their comprehension.
Pollution Master Medea.
For the first time, the chairman seriously considered the name he had heard in Grey’s briefing; according to the description on that little website, the "Adventurers" contaminated by the pollution had only two fates: either they were corroded into a skeleton, or they became the kind of charred, mindless, yet aggressive monsters that now stood before them.
Grey had thought these settings to be fabrications by some bored individuals looking for attention, but he ultimately proved the accuracy of those settings with his own body.
"What are you... exactly?"
The chairman looked directly into Medea’s eyes. She had mentioned "we," implying that aside from her, District Seventeen might have similar existences.
As Grey turned into a monster devoid of thought, the chairman finally realized that perhaps from the very beginning, they were not facing the Medea everyone recognized, but rather some kind of monster that bore a similar appearance to Medea yet had been twisted by some power.
Her ’human’ part had long vanished.
"We?"
Medea laughed softly again, "We are everything you fear."
The board members wanted to ask more questions, to learn from her what other creatures existed within the Void, apart from the corruption.
But it seemed Medea wasn’t planning to leave them any opportunity to inquire further.
"I wish you all a pleasant night."
The meeting communications were cut off.
All that was left to them was the pitch-black night, and a silence as deep as death itself.
