Chapter 388: Chapter 388: Disease Change_1
Valerian recounted many benefits of the "Guardians."
Initially launched by a coalition of ten major bio-pharmaceutical companies, each company’s "Guardians" had different specializations, but what was certain was that all "Guardians" possessed physical capabilities far beyond those of an ordinary human.
The firearms available on the market were insignificant against them; only armor-piercing weapons could leave a mark on their bodies, but that was it. Their powerful self-healing abilities could close wounds in a short amount of time.
To date, there have been fewer than ten cases where "Guardians" have been rendered inoperable. Either it was due to someone luring them into a trap with a large amount of explosives or someone with battlefield experience shot their heads with 2mm electromagnetic rounds.
In addition to superior combat skills and the knowledge of using all common weapons and driving all the vehicles on the market, the greatest benefit of "Guardians" for buyers was their absolute loyalty. They prioritized their mission above all else and would sacrifice themselves without hesitation if necessary, even more decisive than the most fervent corporate supremacists.
"District 17 didn’t have any ’Guardians’ in circulation previously, and Zhuang Chi looked into quite a bit of related material a while ago. She originally wanted to flip ’Guardians’ as a middleman and make a profit from the margin, but people like us, as individual proprietors, aren’t allowed to make bulk purchases. Moreover, it seems that even the executives of those subsidiaries aren’t very interested in them."
Valerian said.
Zhuang Chi still hadn’t given up on her dream of making a fortune and achieving financial freedom. When they had nothing to do at the lab, they would discuss the possibilities of making money, only to discover that no business was prospering due to the poor market environment.
Song Lan patiently listened to Valerian’s narration, but as a rational consumer, he found it less appealing than Chai Ke.
Although "Guardians" seemed to have a wealth of functions, most were flashy without substance, unlike Chai Ke, who could bring joy to many.
...
Meanwhile, Fengling arrived at the subsidiary of Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical and, accompanied by a group of researchers in white coats, completed all the tests.
Logical reasoning tests were used to ensure her mind was functioning properly.
Blood draws, X-rays, and other procedures were performed to check for any abnormalities in her body.
Each test process made Fengling feel somewhat amused. She was a Five Stars rescuer, yet the company’s researchers treated her as if she were fragile, carefully by her side, afraid that the testing equipment might accidentally damage her.
After completing all the exams, the subsidiary’s chief executive personally met with her.
Gray Farmar.
Fengling still remembered the man’s name. Back in District 2, she had seen him once in her family circle.
Grey frowned, holding all the reports about Fengling’s physical examination, looking displeased.
"Is there a problem with the report?"
Fengling asked, somewhat anxious.
"No, there isn’t. All the indicators on it show you’re normal."
And this was the very thing that displeased Grey.
In fact, when the Review Meeting issued the order to deploy Fengling to District 17, almost two-thirds of the bio-pharmaceutical companies objected.
Fengling was their valuable property, and they had invested unimaginable resources in her over the years. They couldn’t fathom what the Review Meeting was thinking, assigning such an important figure in the bio-pharmaceutical field to protect Lu Xiang, a nobody. Weren’t the "Guardians" sufficient to ensure her safety?
As for the Review Meeting’s public claim that the mission was Fengling’s own choice, it sounded even more ludicrous. Her body and life should have belonged to the company; they had paid a hefty price to purchase her and her dilapidated family.
This was not the test result Grey wanted to see. He had hoped that some unknown issue would be found in Fengling, justifying the execution of their agreement to transport her back to District 2.
"That’s good, then."
Upon hearing this, Fengling let out a long sigh of relief. Suddenly, she thought of something and asked, "Director Grey, have you heard of Polick Psychic Syndrome?"
"Why do you ask?"
Whether it was her misconception or not, upon hearing the name of this condition, Grey’s face became even darker, "Who told you about this disease?"
After a moment’s hesitation, Fengling lied, "I heard the rescuers discussing this topic."
Grey Farmar did not miss this detail.
"Polick was a research doctor in the field of Psychic Studies and is also regarded as the founder of modern Psychic Studies. In his long-term research on Spiritual Energy, he discovered a phenomenon where Psychic Abilities tend to cause an adverse reaction with their bodies when ability users are young. The premature development of Psychic Abilities can place a great burden on their bodies, and the symptoms caused by psychic rejection are known as Polick Psychic Syndrome."
Grey added, "This condition only occurs in ability users under the age of ten."
"Then, what happens to the children with Polick Psychic Syndrome?"
"Spiritual Energy will gradually deplete their bodies, and currently, there is no effective medicine on the market to treat this illness."
Grey paused briefly before giving Fengling a definitive answer, "They will die, a few weeks at the least, a few months at the most."
"...I see."
Fengling contemplated thoughtfully.
The person who lay on the hospital bed being visited, was they suffering from this disease?
When did this happen?
Why didn’t she have the slightest recollection of it?
"What are you thinking about?"
Grey’s question interrupted Fengling’s train of thought; he had been observing her reactions closely.
Fengling was a person who couldn’t hide her worries well, and her behavior proved that her curiosity did not stem merely from having heard the rescuers’ discussions.
"It’s nothing."
Grey probed tentatively, "If you felt discomfort in Zone Seventeen..."
"I’m fine. If the results of the medical examination are normal, then I’ll be leaving first."
"Okay."
Grey did not make any attempts to detain her further. He carefully organized Fengling’s medical report, made a backup, and sent it back to the headquarters.
For Fengling, this was an unnecessary curiosity.
Having been in Zone Seventeen for merely two days, she had undergone such a marked change, which made him even more certain of his judgment—sending Fengling to Zone Seventeen was undoubtedly a mistake.
But why...
Why was she specifically interested in Polick Psychic Syndrome?
After completing all this, he called in the two guards standing at the doorway and ordered, "You follow Fengling. You investigate where Fengling has been in the past two days, what she has done, and who told her about the Polick Psychic Syndrome."
