Chapter 384: Chapter 384: Thorny Guest_1
"Big Radish Head" stumbled home in a daze.
It was a shabby rental in the slums, a gathering spot for street thugs. He ignored their greetings and collapsed onto his bed without even taking off his clothes.
The baseball bat studded with nails on the table, the posters of sexy pin-up girls on the walls—all of it reminded him that this was the real world, that he was indeed alive.
But there were things he couldn’t dwell on.
For instance, the "Adventurer" who had stayed behind in the operating room to cover his retreat. By the time he had jumped down, the door had already been forced open by a charred monster. How could he survive in that perilous Void world?
"Big Radish Head" suddenly thought of something, rolled out of bed and went over to his old laptop, which had seen years of use. He logged into that familiar website—the one where everything started. The private messages still had a record of his trash-talking with "Jingling Bell."
There was an update on the website.
According to "Adventurer 13"’s latest message, one way to leave "The Contaminated Staircase" was for someone on the outside to use tools like a firefighter’s axe to break open the security doors. This was situated on the sixth floor of the "Benevolent Prosthesis Hospital," following the signs for cardiology, where you’d find an upright trolley with two vials of unidentified serum. To the right of this was "The Contaminated Staircase."
This was a map coordinate!
When "Big Radish Head" saw the updated entry, he finally understood why the "Adventurer" had been muttering.
The other party was charting a map of the "Benevolent Prosthesis Hospital."
"Adventurer 13"—that was his name, or perhaps his code name.
"Big Radish Head" was somewhat agitated as he drafted a new post:
"Do Not Underestimate the Void!"
This was nothing like what he had imagined; entering and arriving at a safe zone to loot the place was outstripping any expectations. If it hadn’t been for "Adventurer 13," he might have already become a skeleton, completely decayed and corroded by contamination. Even so, he might have inadvertently led to the other’s demise.
The charred creatures from the Void were probably attracted by the noise of the axe chopping down the door.
He didn’t know why others wanted to join the Void Investigation Agency. Whether it was to get rich overnight or simply to seek thrills in an otherwise boring life, it was certainly a foolish act.
The website’s traffic was increasingly high. From initial disinterest, it had come to the point where new posts appeared with every refresh.
Not surprisingly, after he posted his message, some who enjoyed stirring up trouble started to attack him en masse. But after everything that had just happened, he had no desire to waste time on pointless arguments, until he saw a familiar ID.
"Jingling Bell."
She had followed him and sent a string of seven private messages.
All seven messages were the same question.
"How did you get in?"
While he was still stunned, several more messages came through with the same persistent question, as if she would keep asking until he responded.
"Benevolent Prosthesis Hospital, don’t go there."
Finally, the repetition changed, "Tell me, it’s very important to me."
...
Meanwhile, the conversation between the two was being watched by many people.
"She actually sent a private message to ’Big Radish Head’."
Seeing this, Bai Zhu was somewhat surprised. Although Song Lan’s "prophecy" had come true, she still found it very strange because, before Fengling posted a series of questions, there were still messages of ’Big Radish Head’ insulting her in the chat history. Are young people really settling their feuds this quickly?
"Hiss, 500 watts, transferred to you." Bai Zhu was willing to accept the loss, but she wanted to lose clearly. She stared at Song Lan, who was lying motionless on the public lounge sofa, and asked, "How did you know?"
Ever since he came back, he had been nesting on the sofa, repeatedly claiming he was seriously injured in the Void.
That was only because Lu Xiang was not around, otherwise, she would have definitely made her take this guy to a private room for a thorough examination to find out where exactly he was injured.
"Because she volunteered to become Lu Xiang’s bodyguard, and she had never dealt with Lu Xiang before that."
After systematically reading through the intelligence Bai Zhu had collected over the past few days, Song Lan realized that nothing or no one in this city had any appeal to Fengling, except for the Void.
From the very beginning, she came for the Void.
"Are you saying she wanted to investigate the Void?"
"Inside the Void, there may be something she is familiar with."
"That’s why you chose the hospital as the location."
Bai Zhu suddenly understood. ’Big Radish Head’ was just a smokescreen. Song Lan’s real intention was to get Fengling to notice this matter, or rather, he hoped to confirm some of his suspicions through Fengling’s reaction.
Technically speaking, the hospital was not a good choice.
The hallucinations of ’Big Radish Head’ stemmed from the two pills he swallowed before getting kicked out of the hospital room, but his hallucinations could not affect the real world. How to give him a good "playing experience" in a busy prosthetic hospital took them quite a bit of effort.
"Fengling is a special guest, the previous schemes won’t work on her."
Fear often stems from insufficient firepower. If Fengling were placed in the environment just now, she wouldn’t have been trapped in the stairwell at all—a single slash might have brought down the walls as well, not to mention that inducing hallucinations in her was extremely challenging.
She hadn’t implanted any prostheses, meaning Bai Zhu’s hacking skills, which she was best at, were ineffective, and her body was immune to the side effects of any drug. Additionally, her own combat strength was strong enough to kill any of the Void creatures they had released so far.
The Void amusement park had encountered an unprecedentedly tricky guest from the outset.
"Have you thought of a way?"
They had also discussed the issue with Fengling in the conference room. With their current capabilities, it was difficult to pose any substantial threat to her, let alone induce fear or confusion in her emotions.
To deal with a rescuer of her level, it would likely require the presence of the Devourer itself or Song Lan to personally take care of the problem. The only issue was, using brute force against a guest went against the park’s founding purpose, reverting everything back to the most primitive state, so they had been waiting for Song Lan or Lu Xiang to give directional advice.
"Even though the Void creatures can’t influence her emotions, it doesn’t mean she fears nothing. The Italian philosopher Diaboro once said, ’All fear comes from the past.’"
Song Lan said, "We don’t need to guide her; she will find the ’Benevolent Prosthesis Hospital’ on her own."
