Chapter 377: Chapter 377: Twin Flowers_1
It was Medea’s phone call that woke him up, hoping he could come to the dump as soon as possible. From her slightly urgent tone, he could deduce that it was related to Fengling.
Medea never hid her deep interest in Fengling, and she became excited after hearing that the person sent to protect Lu Xiang was Fengling. Later, Song Lan learned from Bai Zhu that Medea had always wanted to "observe" Fengling while she was an executive at Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical. After all, Fengling was undoubtedly a miracle in the biopharmaceutical field, and her resistance to various drug side effects was still a mystery in the industry.
However, due to being in different departments, after she became a wanted criminal of the company following a lab accident, she never got the chance to meet Fengling face to face.
After answering the phone, Song Lan washed up and had to ride the MK-Ⅱ straight to the dump.
As soon as he entered the command center of the Bug Swarm, Medea proactively stepped forward to greet him. On Song Lan’s way over, she had already integrated the intelligence collected from the previous day, and the series of strange occurrences with Fengling only amplified her curiosity about this "genetic science miracle."
"First is this."
She handed him two photos.
The first was of Fengling sitting on the inside of a train seat, her head gently resting against the window, a thin layer of frost covering the outside view, leaving only a few words visible:
"Don’t go, don’t go."
The second showed the scattered luggage piled up on the ground beneath Fengling’s apartment building. On the wall of the apartment’s entrance, the same message was etched with some sharp tool:
"Leave, leave."
Whoever left these messages seemed to be urging Fengling to leave the city as quickly as possible, the further from District Seventeen, the better.
"Not bad, you’ve learned to scare people on your own."
Song Lan naturally took these engravings as the handiwork of Medea and others. In fact, they had previously used such detailed hints to led Obena step by step into the "Void."
"Not us."
Dr. Bai Zhu said, they had no plans to frighten Fengling at this time.
Medea hoped Fengling would stay in District Seventeen as long as possible, preferably forever.
Bai Zhu felt that given Medea’s enthusiasm for Fengling, if someone genuinely frightened Fengling away, she would definitely be upset.
Yet this meant there was some unseen force alongside Fengling, one that had twice issued warnings to her to leave. As a "shareholder" of the Void Paradise, Bai Zhu objectively agreed that these warnings were correct.
Before Fengling’s arrival, they had held a special meeting to discuss different scenarios, including planning a wonderful journey into the Void should Fengling and Obena Lionheart prove to be similar.
At least, for rescuers, District Seventeen was not a good place to be.
Could there be a "Void" next to Fengling, one that realized the danger of the city and hence issued her the warnings?
"Besides, the Horn Bug reconnaissance squad that was tracking her has been discovered."
"That’s not surprising, she is an alternate for the Six Stars rescuer."
To this day, Song Lan’s good friend Wild Bone had left a deep impression on him. Apart from the astonishing power of space-based weapons and an almost invincible force field, he was also the only one who reacted minutely when time entered an abnormal zone.
Wild Bone, I, Song Lan, deem you The Strongest.
So, it was within reason that an alternate for the Six Stars rescuer, not much weaker than Wild Bone, would detect the Horn Bug reconnaissance squad following her.
But the advantage of the Horn Bug was that, if discovered, they were usually treated as regular mutant insects.
However, Bai Zhu shook her head, "I know, but the process was somewhat strange, you’ll see when you look at it."
She provided the footage captured by the Horn Bug reconnaissance squad.
The timestamp was 3 AM.
By this time, Fengling had finished packing all her luggage and lay heavily asleep on the bed.
But almost as soon as the Horn Bug started scouting and crept into the house, she opened her eyes—or more accurately, she bulged her eyes out in a way that, under the night sky and moonlight, gave off the feel of a horror movie.
Her gaze immediately shifted to the Horn Bug.
This wasn’t perception; she genuinely knew where the Horn Bug was.
"According to the intelligence we’ve gathered, Fengling neither has Spiritual Energy talent nor has she undergone any Prosthesis Modification, not even the everyday type," explained Bai Zhu timely. The reason for emphasizing this was that the rescuers with physical enhancements had always been criticized for their sensory perception. Compared with technology and Spiritual Energy, the limited abilities of the naked eye made them the group most vulnerable to ambush.
Yet Fengling’s perceptive abilities were much sharper and more accurate than even Obena Lionheart’s—Obena who had never detected the Horn Bug scout squad trailing him during his time in District 17.
How did she discover it?
For the rest of the night, Bai Zhu couldn’t figure out how someone could suddenly wake up from deep sleep and spot a thumb-sized Horn Bug in a dark environment right away.
Combining the two captured photos, she could only assume that Fengling had some sort of innate sense of danger.
"But the most interesting part is what comes next."
Bai Zhu continued playing the footage shot by the Horn Bug scout, and just when Song Lan thought that this valiant warrior was about to sacrifice herself for the Bug Swarm, Fengling’s hand bypassed the knife handle and turned on the bedside lamp.
She rolled out of bed and rummaged through a suitcase by the window for a while before pulling out a wrinkled bag due to compression.
Good Taste Tomato Chips.
She tore open the bag and carefully bent down, taking out a chip and slowly approaching the Horn Bug that was observing her from a corner of the room.
"Shh, shh, come here, I’ve got something tasty for you."
The Horn Bug hesitated, but after a long while, it finally received a command from the Bug Swarm, leaped down from the ceiling, and landed beside Fengling.
This wasn’t a trap.
Seeing the Horn Bug land, she opened the bag wide and dumped half the bag of chips onto the floor.
The sound of the Horn Bug chewing made her beam with joy. She sat there on the cold floor, her fingers lightly touching the back of the Horn Bug, stroking its body.
"Eat up, you need to eat well to grow big and strong."
Fengling’s gentle voice in the recording blended with the evening breeze.
This brave Horn Bug scout not only did not die in the line of duty, but it also got to taste expensive snacks from the core district.
"That’s the weirdest part."
"You mean to say that there’s actually a young girl who likes Horn Bugs?"
"I like Horn Bugs too."
Medea immediately retorted Song Lan’s comment, indicating that it wasn’t just young girls who liked Horn Bugs, but this trend was on the rise, and she believed that someday in the future, an affection for Horn Bugs and even the entire Bug Swarm would become a fashionable trend.
"I mean, her vigilance is so intense it’s almost scary, yet she often does the opposite."
Ignoring the warnings twice as well as feeding the Horn Bug proved this point.
Fengling did not always trust her instincts.
A strong sense of disconnection led them to a bizarre thought.
——Fengling and her instincts had two independent personalities.
