Chapter 375: Fog City_1
Chapter 375: Chapter 375: Fog City_1
This was a train heading to District Seventeen.
There was only one passenger on the train.
That was because the train platform in District Seventeen had just reopened today; a gang skirmish had taken place a week earlier, resulting in gang members blowing up the entire platform with explosives.
The passenger leaned against the window, looking at the gradually emerging outline of the city in the distance. The time on the phone pointed to 18:03 in the evening, and nightfall enveloped the city, which didn’t seem bustling.
Besides the night, there was also fog.
It had spread all the way here, with buildings appearing and disappearing in the mist. The train carriage felt somewhat chilly, and soon, a layer of white frost formed on the windows.
The passenger withdrew her gaze from the distance, looking at the words that slowly appeared on the train window.
"Don’t go, don’t go."
Someone outside the train had written these words.
The passenger waited until the "person" outside the window had completed every stroke. She merely pursed her lips and smiled, saying nothing, and extended her right hand to leave a handprint next to the writing.
The fog grew denser.
She turned her face and saw that the route they’d come by had sunk into the fog.
The conductor announced the upcoming information, reminding every passenger to prepare to disembark. Please give way to one another after the train arrives at the station to prevent a stampede.
Five minutes later, the train slowly stopped at the terminus. District Two and District Seventeen were separated by a great distance across the United Government, marking a journey that lasted over a dozen hours.
Unbeknownst to her, the fog had cleared, and the bright lights of the platform shone into the carriage, allowing her to clearly see the people waiting to meet her at the train station.
The locals in District Seventeen were very warm towards her. This warmth dispelled the cold of the journey, bringing a sense of comfort to her heart.
They held up an electronic signboard with her name, standing in the most conspicuous place, apparently to make it easier for her to notice them the moment she arrived at the station.
Unfortunately, the electronic signboard was upside down, making her name appear inverted.
When she walked down the platform, the man holding the signboard was evidently baffled for quite a while.
"Hello, I’m Fengling. It’s a pleasure to meet you for the first time. Please take good care of me," she said.
Approaching the two persons, she went up to them and bowed, "I am here by the order of the family head to ensure your safety."
Song Lan found this scene rather odd, as Fengling seemed several years younger than Lu Xiang. If it weren’t for the long sword, which appeared taller than her, fastened at her waist, he might have suspected that Dr. Bai Zhu’s intelligence was somehow flawed this time.
According to the information, the young lady before him was a Five Star rescuer, and she was so close to becoming a Six Star candidate.
This candidate status wasn’t in name only but meant that in case a Six Star rescuer met with an accident, she would fill the vacancy.
It was as if, hypothetically, Wild Bone and another Six Star rescuer had a feud and battled it out in a United Government city for seven days and nights. In the end, Wild Bone made a wrong move, had his leg broken by the other party, lost, and in a fit of anger, left the United Government to join the Rebel Army, then Fengling would urgently fill the vacancy left by Wild Bone.
Even when Medea was still working at the company, she heard the name Fengling more than once.
One of the United Government’s ultimate masterpieces in the bio-pharmaceutical field, she had received countless gene-strengthening drug injections produced by large corporations from a young age. In a sense, her talents were no less than Wild Bone’s, and the gene drugs didn’t bring any burden to her mental state.
Medea referred to Fengling as the Wild Bone of the bio-pharmaceutical field.
But no photo of Fengling could be found online.
It wasn’t due to the United Government increasing its secrecy measures but rather because Fengling usually stayed indoors with her family, hardly ever took pictures, and even the bio-pharmaceutical companies would only see her when it was time for her "medication" and "check-ups."
Song Lan had to admit that Fengling was far from what he had imagined. In his mind, Fengling was a three-meter-tall, muscular behemoth who could lift a car with one arm.
Yet, her slender arms and legs made him suspect she might not be as strong as him.
"Chief Song."
Before coming to District Seventeen, her family had briefed her on the current situation in the district and the relationship between Song Lan and Lu Xiang.
All things considered, their relationship was solid, and even Military Intelligence Section Seven couldn’t separate them.
These revelations had greatly shocked the inexperienced Fengling, who wished to offer her best wishes to the pair.
However, blessings aside, there were matters that needed clarification. She raised her right hand and pointed at Song Lan’s still-raised hands, "The electronic signboard, you’re holding it upside down."
For a moment, the atmosphere on the train platform turned awkward.
"Oh, haha, I didn’t even notice, my apologies!"
He awkwardly straightened the electronic signboard and then engaged in a fierce non-verbal exchange with Lu Xiang by his side. Their understanding had reached a point where they could communicate with just eye contact.
"You didn’t notice I was holding the signboard upside down?"
"Of course, I saw it."
"Then why didn’t you tell me?"
"I thought you wanted to show her who’s boss."
"Am I that kind of person?"
"Yes."
...
Fine!
Song Lan unilaterally declared that their rapport had dropped by 10 points.
Although he indeed hadn’t been very friendly to the envoys sent by the United Government in the past, whether it was the three-star rescuer Su Li, or the four-star rescuer Oberna, neither had actually left District Seventeen alive...
But at least he had always acted the part on the surface!
To quickly escape the awkwardness, Song Lan said, "You must be tired, we’ve prepared a welcome banquet for you."
After Lu Xiang became the supervisor of the District Seventeen Rescuer Service Center, the first thing she did was to set up a canteen within the department.
As a service-oriented department, various types of hospitality activities were essential. The canteen was conducive to welcoming foreign guests or envoys from the core regions.
It was about the image project of District Seventeen and had nothing to do with her personal preferences.
"Then I’ll trouble you, oh, and I have some baggage that I need to pick up at the luggage area."
"Do you have a lot of luggage? We’ll help you out."
"It’s not much at all, you guys just wait for me outside, I can carry it myself."
Fengling declined Song Lan’s kindness.
Once again, she became aware of the warmth of the people of District Seventeen. It seemed they weren’t as bad as they were made out to be in the core regions.
The groups split up to carry out their tasks: Fengling went to collect her luggage, while Song Lan and Lu Xiang parked the hover car by the roadside in advance. After bidding farewell to Fengling, Song Lan gathered his thoughts.
This encounter from start to finish hadn’t gone at all like he imagined it would. Not only did Fengling’s appearance completely defy his expectations, but their conversation lacked any hint of confrontation or strange mockery.
"Don’t let her appearance fool you."
After parking the car, Lu Xiang spoke up, reminding Song Lan—she had been observing him discreetly all along. Since Fengling got out of the car, his gaze hadn’t shifted from her, not even once.
"Something feels off, is she really..."
"Thud—"
Song Lan’s voice was interrupted by a dull thud.
The thudding did not stop there but came closer and closer.
Following the sound, what he saw was a moving "mountain," with Fengling staggering beneath it.
More precisely, Fengling had staged a modern-day version of ’The Foolish Old Man Moves a Mountain’, carrying a mountain-like pile of luggage towards them. Those successive thuds were the sounds her footsteps made on the concrete.
Song Lan was so shocked that he almost bit his tongue.
He had to retract his previous belief that Fengling might not be as strong as him and sincerely apologized for his underestimation.
In a daze, Fengling had already moved the "mountain" in front of them.
She glanced at her bound-together baggage and then at Lu Xiang’s hover car.
Clearly, Lu Xiang’s car was not big enough to fit her luggage.
"Why don’t you drive, and I’ll follow behind," Fengling said, her cheeks flushing a bit. "This is my first time traveling far, and my family was worried I wouldn’t have enough to eat or wear here, so they prepared a bit more luggage for me..."
