Chapter 365: Chapter 365: This World Needs the Void_1
Song Lan felt that the highest realm of a Fisher was that when she posed a question, you would never know whether she was sincere or merely baiting you.
Sitting on the couch watching programs together after work should be an incredibly warm and relaxing scene, but now it made him feel that the world was filled with danger.
Fortunately, Obena Lionheart rescued him, giving him time to ponder the question thoroughly.
The four-star rescuer started the live stream ten minutes early today and faced a barrage of insults in the barrage. He first explained the reason for the loss of control in the hospital this morning.
Originally, Oberna has scoffed at the Void Overlap theory proposed by Lu Xiang, but to salvage his public image, he had to employ this seemingly plausible explanation. He asserted that his symptoms were unrelated to the Cyber lunatics but were the result of an attack by Void creatures.
The world that overlapped with reality, the proliferating flesh buds, dense eyes, and indescribable creatures—all these vivid descriptions quelled some of the insults, replaced by discussions on the truthfulness of the content.
For those who liked to find fun on the internet, Void was also one of their most recent favorite topics; however, discussions about the Void were limited to laypeople’s imaginations. Now, for the first time, an "official" person publicly acknowledged the existence of the Void and described the exact nature of another world in front of the camera.
Oberna’s description not only teemed with details, but it also matched many people’s imaginations of the Void.
For a live stream aimed at recovering public image, this was a good start.
At least Oberna diverted the audience’s attention, focusing their eyes on the Void, highlighting the individual who proposed the Void Overlap theory as a "concerned citizen." Lu Xiang acted as the messenger, and these two were seen as reliable sources in the eyes of the citizens of District Seventeen.
The citizens suddenly realized they hadn’t heard news of the "concerned citizen" in a while, finding out that the last sighting was over a month ago, and they had disappeared while investigating the secrets of the Void alone, a wave of anxiety quickly spread through the live stream room.
Is the "concerned citizen" okay?
Could it be that even the invincible "concerned citizen" has fallen to the Void?
Seeing the barrage’s concern for the "concerned citizen," Song Lan felt a warm fuzziness inside.
But this world needs the Void.
At least at this stage, every question they could not explain could be thrown to the Void, as no one could comprehend those beings that existed outside the plane of reality, and the sense of mystery was their best disguise.
However, this was exactly what the Bug Swarm had hoped for.
This was the only way for Oberna to shake off the pressure from public opinion and recover his public image.
And it was also the real reason he had confronted the Void head-on at the prosthetic hospital.
"At least he’s got brains,"
Song Lan said, "I was really afraid he would spread some company-supremacist rhetoric, continuing to lower his public image."
"The rescuer department and Lionheart Military Industry both have professional crisis PR teams, and the statements for the live stream had been crafted in advance by the team."
Lu Xiang wasn’t surprised by this outcome.
Oberna’s issue had affected the public image of Lionheart Military Industry and the rescuer department, and they could not allow unfavorable public opinion to keep growing.
The first round of the public opinion battle was pretty much over at this point.
For them, although Oberna temporarily stepped down from the eye of the storm in public opinion, he had officially conveyed an important message to the public— the Void was a reality.
The Void was not just a universal scapegoat but also an important energy source for the Bug Swarm, at least that’s what Father Bruno believed.
He had always been actively trying to emulate the model of the Lunar Eclipse Sect, turning people’s imaginations of the Void into Spiritual Energy through faith, and the speculative comments online weren’t enough to make the public genuinely believe in the existence of the Void. But after the Obena Lionheart live stream, the Void had entered the hearts of every viewer.
This news would quickly spread among people, not limited to District Seventeen; people from other districts would also become staunch "believers" of the Void.
In this respect, they and Oberna reached a win-win state.
The live stream ended successfully amidst the enthusiastic barrage discussion about the "concerned citizen"’s movements and the Void creatures.
The moment the signal was cut, Oberna clenched his fists.
He was still in the prosthetic hospital, and the "Governor" was nowhere to be found. The identity of the attacker remained a mystery, and as for the apparition he’d seen in the bathroom that morning, he was completely clueless.
Yet, in such a state, he was obliged to face those tedious citizens and, under the watchful eyes of the public, offer an apology.
Outside the window, night had enveloped District Seventeen.
Being alone in a foreign land unexpectedly brought on a sensation of loneliness like he had never felt before.
Sitting on the hospital bed, Oberna quickly realized something was amiss. He was never one to be sentimental, nor was he one to indulge in such unnecessary, tedious emotions.
Something must have affected him.
Perhaps it was the stark contrast with reality, or maybe it was the mist that had somehow crept into the ward without notice.
The fog had set in.
The door and windows of the ward were shut tight, and he noticed this increasingly dense mist was seeping in through the gaps of the window. Surrounded by the fog, a chill originating from the depths of his heart enveloped him.
This was not a cold of the physical realm but more like a shiver stemming from deep within his soul.
Oberna walked to the window.
The night sky was shrouded in mist, which obscured the sky and acted as a barrier that kept the city’s lights to this side.
Visibility was dropping.
The buildings opposite were no longer distinguishable, and vehicles passing through the street below disappeared into the depths of the fog in the blink of an eye.
Oberna watched the night sky intently.
As time ticked by, the chilling sensation from his soul became more pronounced, yet at the same time, his vision grew increasingly clear.
So clear that he could pierce through the mist and see what lay beyond.
There was something watching him from atop the fog, or more accurately, overlooking the entire city.
Oberna couldn’t describe the precise image of the shadow; its body was vast enough to blanket the entire sky, a form that didn’t belong to any species known to mankind.
He did not move.
Or, to put it more accurately, he was unable to move under the scrutiny of that shadow.
"Thump, thump, thump—!"
The knocking saved him.
"Mr. Oberna."
The knocker was a nurse from the prosthetic hospital. In an instant, the chill vanished. The fog outside persisted, but his vision could no longer penetrate the mist to see what lay beyond.
With great caution, the nurse cracked the door open. In light of that morning’s events, Oberna had been categorized as a dangerous individual, and no one was willing to visit the ward. Losing a game of rock-paper-scissors, the unlucky nurse had to shoulder the onerous task.
"Mr. Oberna, there’s fog outside."
She cautioned.
In her memory, District Seventeen had never experienced such weather.
The fog obscured the streets, and just five minutes earlier, the Law Enforcers department had issued a curfew, instructing everyone to return home immediately to avoid accidents.
"The doctor says, please stay in your ward and don’t wander around until the fog dissipates."
