Chapter 360: Chapter 360: Corporate Supremacy_1
Obena Lionheart, four-star rescuer.
At the age of six, he was recommended for enrollment in the military academy of the Seventh District. During his studies, he achieved excellent grades and stood out in multiple real combat missions. Before he even graduated, he was selected by Lionheart Military Industry and became a key individual the company chose to cultivate.
Obena was his original name, while Lionheart was equivalent to the company’s emblem. Obena’s followers could recognize the strength of Lionheart Military Industry through "Lionheart".
In Song Lan’s understanding, back in the year 2020, this was no different than a company putting advertisements on the players’ jerseys, only that by the year 2166, they had managed to put the advertisement and trademark right into people’s names.
It took only a few minutes for Dr. Bai Zhu to find all the information on Obena.
Prosthesis modification degree was 52%, his entire body was outfitted with products from Lionheart Military Industry.
Or rather, even Obena himself was a product of the company.
Another unexpected finding was that Obena and Lu Xiang were alumni, separated by over a dozen generations.
Lu... He was also the top graduate of his class, but because his ideological awareness was not sufficient, he failed to become a company supremacist, nearly turning himself into an unemployed person by not selling himself to the company.
"What does a company supremacist mean?"
He found a peculiar description within the narrative text, a concept he had never heard before.
"As the name suggests, it’s about discarding personal gains and losses, taking the company’s interests as starting point, and when necessary, being willing to sacrifice one’s life for the benefit of the company," Medea answered Song Lan’s question.
"Are there really such zealous people?"
"Yes, and within companies, there are quite a few people like Obena. They were born at the bottom of society, discovered by the company, which changed their lives. For them, the company is no different from a second set of parents. Many bodyguards by the side of company executives have been selected through this system. Not only are they incredibly talented, but they are also willing to give up their lives in dangerous moments to ensure the survival of the company’s higher-ups."
Company supremacy wasn’t a doctrine but a thought widely acknowledged in large corporations.
"I once had contact with the personal bodyguard of the Big Boss of Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical. She said the happiest moment of her life was when the Big Boss invited her to have lunch together on an outing."
Even after many years, the bodyguard still remembered every detail of that lunch, and the excited and joyful expression on her face when she spoke of it instilled a hint of fear in Medea. To her, the bodyguard and the Big Boss had become like two different species, with the almost worshipful adulation of a lower being towards a superior one.
"That moment made me realize the harmful nature of company supremacy," said Medea.
Medea felt she might even have to thank the Big Boss’s bodyguard because before that encounter, she had been a company supremacist too. "Originally, after an accident occurred in the ’outside’ laboratory, I should have taken the blame willingly, accepting the judgment of the Review Meeting and the company, but I changed my mind."
"Congratulations on walking away from the poison of company supremacy," Song Lan said.
The joys and sorrows of life do not always intersect, so Song Lan could not empathize with the determination of those willing to go through fire and water for the company. If the company made an unreasonable demand of him, he would choose to resign.
"Now, I believe in a new creed," Medea said earnestly.
"I now adhere to Bug Swarm supremacy," she declared.
"...I think you can choose not to believe in any creed," Song Lan said.
"It’s the driving force that propels us forward, and if you are interested, I can give you a detailed introduction to the superiority of Bug Swarm supremacy."
"Next time, definitely next time," said Song Lan, hastily waving his hand. "I have other things to do next."
This trip to the junkyard, in addition to learning about Obena Lionheart’s personal experiences, also uncovered some key information—Obena Lionheart had close ties with the Foster Family and was recommended by Hog Foster to serve as the manager of the Seventh District’s rescuer department.
So, he actually came with a task.
Given Lu Xiang’s reputation within the Foster Family, Oberna’s visit was definitely not just to make friends with them.
This pained Song Lan, for he was a person who liked making friends.
What pained him even more was that Oberna was someone willing to sacrifice everything for the company’s interests, and the series of information he had gathered all pointed to the likelihood that the conflict between them and this four-star rescuer would escalate to an irreconcilable level.
..................
Meanwhile, the meeting regarding the replacement of Tesla Technology’s CEO by a bionic person had begun.
Oberna had sealed off the news, not allowing it to be disseminated back to the core areas immediately, because he knew once Tesla Technology got involved, the matter would spiral out of his control.
On the surface, the "pseudo-human" as well as the recent abnormal events involving artificial intelligence had reached a conclusion.
Headed by Gao Yuan, the rogue artificial intelligence had infiltrated the company’s upper echelons, using the authority at hand to spread the virus, followed by a rigorous internal investigation to root out all malfunctioning artificial intelligences and eradicate the virus from its source, and then everything would return to normal.
Yet, Oberna remembered Hog Foster’s warning.
He had said that the most terrifying enemies often hide within their midst.
Such as the artificial intelligence that replaced Gao Yuan, and such as Lu Xiang who had just gone to the Interrogation room alone.
Somebody was also aiding the artificial intelligence to escape; otherwise, with their capabilities, it would have been impossible to avoid surveillance omnipresent in the Seventh District and vanish without a trace under the watch of everyone.
He didn’t know about other cities, but at least in the Seventh District, there were accomplices hidden other than Gao Yuan.
But just as he had said before, if there truly were accomplices, they would certainly try to rescue Gao Yuan, and rather than wandering aimlessly around the city like headless flies, it’s better to grab them by the throat.
Once he had a suspect, the following investigation became much easier.
A document was handed over to Oberna, and after briefly reviewing the above information, he looked at Lu Xiang and said, "Director Lu, according to our investigation, the Law Enforcers seem to have not fully cooperated with our operation this time, all they did was stay in the hovercar, symbolically patrolling the air... Furthermore, there’s ample evidence that a few months ago, you had a private meeting with Gao Yuan, and the military arms were funded by him on behalf of Tesla Technology."
It was less a meeting than an accountability session.
Oberna’s suspicion of them was already evident in his demeanor, and Lu Xiang had braced herself for interrogation before stepping into the meeting room.
"The military arms were indeed sponsored by Tesla Technology, but if you have searched his memory, you should know the specifics of our meeting, where we did not discuss any topics related to artificial intelligence."
On this point, she was without guilt.
Only after the rescuer website released the identification standards for "pseudo-humans" did they start to question Gao Yuan’s identity.
"Then, how do you explain the non-cooperative actions of your department?"
"We abided by the rescuers’ department’s orders, but in this city, we carry an even more important mission."
"You’re not going to tell me that you prioritize maintaining the city’s security, are you?"
Oberna sarcastically pulled out an electronic promotional brochure, "I’ve read your promotional materials, and I must admit that with your efforts, the crime rate in this city has indeed dropped quite a bit, that can be considered a noteworthy achievement... However, you should understand one thing, the Seventh District is the Seventh District of the United Government, companies and families are the core of this world!"
"Maintaining security? Why would you think that?"
Lu Xiang’s response took Oberna by surprise. He had investigated Lu Xiang and had expected her, given her character, to endlessly argue with him on this issue, yet she instead said, "You’ve just arrived here, so it’s normal for some things to be unclear to you, but I would still like to remind you of something, the Seventh District isn’t just the Seventh District of the United Government, it’s also the place in this world that’s closest to the Void."
