Chapter 334: Chapter 334: Beware of the Man in Black_1
The efficiency of the Special Operations Team was always the highest.
In less than twenty minutes, they had assembled in formation and hurriedly rushed to the small town an hour’s drive from the compound.
When the hovercar descended like dark clouds, the gang members in the town were set abuzz.
The roaring overhead was like the bugle call to war, their gathering here was to prepare for an inevitable war with the Seventeenth District’s law enforcement system, but the day had come sooner than they expected, and it caught them off guard.
Facing the formidable enemy, a former gang cadre delivered a speech before the crowd.
They may have once been enemies, but now, only if everyone in the town united could they possibly weather this crisis.
"They destroyed our homes, made us destitute and reduced to this state!"
The resonant speech stirred everyone’s emotions, "And still, they won’t let us be, they want to exterminate us completely. This time we will not back down. Even if we fight to the last soldier, fire the last bullet, we will defend our final dignity!"
The gang members on the square were moved, responding to the speaker’s call to action with their own.
Check weapons, load them, their eyes filled with determination, like veterans heading to the battlefield.
At that moment, someone brought some terrible news.
"Lu Xiang is here!"
These five words brought everyone’s actions to a halt; all eyes centered on the speaker.
"So what if Lu Xiang is here?"
The speaker looked up at the hovercar passing overhead without reducing his volume, speaking as if to challenge the Law Enforcers or the absurd fate thrust upon them, "Gather up all the arms!"
His eyes hardened as he gave the command, "Hand them all over to the Law Enforcers to seek sentence reduction!"
As he said, what could Lu Xiang do?
No matter how ruthless she was, she was a Law Enforcer, and being one, she had to act according to the law; facing a group of prisoners who surrendered and actively handed over their weapons, Law Enforcers must ensure their basic human rights!
This statement immediately caused an uproar among the crowd; they heeded the call en masse, with some even raising white flags they had prepared in advance, hoisting them up the town square’s flagpole before the Special Operations Team could leap out of their hovercar.
They adeptly shifted their battle cry from "fight to the death against the Law Enforcers" to recognizing "the wise adapt."
This speech deeply touched Valerian and others who were watching the drama unfold from the top floor of an office building. They had anticipated a bloody fight in the town and had made tactical plans to encircle the gang members from the rear, yet before they could make a move, the gang members had already surrendered.
Their collapse was perhaps even quicker than that of a scam artist.
"It turns out it’s the gang members who have been living in dire straits."
"They do have redeeming qualities."
Different from the others, Song Lan greatly appreciated the speaker’s adaptability, "It seems there was a reason they’ve survived till today."
Lu Xiang collected the weapons handed over by the gang members, and ten minutes later, arrived alone at the top floor of this office building.
She certainly knew that these former gang members had all gathered in this small town, but the suburban prison was already full and could not accommodate so many criminals. The request to expand the prison had been submitted, and though quickly approved by the new mayor, actual implementation would take about half a year.
"Is this the scam artist you mentioned?"
Lu Xiang scrutinized the body; the turn of events had surpassed everyone’s expectations.
She was beginning to feel that Song Lan might have what they call the Jinx Star constitution. Even though he always professed a love for peace, wherever he went, death followed, even a simple fraud case had escalated to a homicide.
"Judging from the body, it’s sudden death,"
Lu Xiang said, "A variety of diseases or poor quality everyday implants could cause such an outcome."
Even now, people are still dying every day in District Seventeen.
At least from the manner of death, this scammer had nothing particularly special about him.
"But an hour before we arrived, he was still chatting with us. I suspect someone came here during that time,"
Valerian shared the result of his deduction.
Unfortunately, due to years of neglect, the building’s electrical system had long since failed, rendering the surveillance equipment unstartable relics; they could find no substantial evidence.
"People die like this every day," Lu Xiang said. "Deducing is like chasing a ghost that doesn’t exist, always making me overlook the simplest and most obvious possibility."
"Chief, are you saying he really just died of a sudden accident?"
"That’s the answer the body tells us."
Upon hearing this, Valerian and the others pondered thoughtfully. They looked again at the body on the sofa, which seemed to have had no inkling of death’s approach, and felt somehow dissatisfied with this conclusion.
But rationally, they had to admit it was indeed one of the many possibilities.
Indeed, there are those who fantasize about reaching the pinnacle of their lives just to die unexpectedly—an absurdist tragedy that the pessimists love to focus on.
The only one who saw through the truth was Song Lan, who only appeared to be an onlooking civilian but was actually Lu Xiang’s boyfriend.
He didn’t like to deduce, nor was he willing to waste brain cells on a dead scammer, but he understood Lu Xiang and immediately caught on that she had just lied.
If Lu Xiang truly believed it, she would usually give a direct yes or no answer. Whenever she rambled and delivered an ambiguous answer like she just did, it meant she was lying.
Realizing this, Song Lan didn’t expose her but played along instead, "Perhaps he suffered from some chronic illness. Once the autopsy report comes out, everything will be clear. Since the scammer is dead, you should go back first; I’ll stay to hand things over to Captain Doug."
...
After sending Valerian and the others away and ensuring the sound of footsteps had faded, he locked the door and asked, "Why did you lie to them?"
"Because of this."
Lu Xiang handed over a note. "I found this mixed in with the munitions I was collecting earlier. Someone deliberately gave it to me."
The note had only a short sentence:
Be wary of the man in black.
"Is this ’man in black’ the same one you mentioned before?"
Song Lan immediately recalled that Lu Xiang had once warned him to be cautious of a man in black coming after him following the emergence of that mysterious Spiritual Energy organization.
"It seems like their kind of tactic."
Lu Xiang glanced at the scammer’s body, "Once involved with those people, you’re mostly likely to end up with a bad fate."
"Should I avoid it too?"
As an ordinary citizen, Song Lan immediately realized the danger of the situation.
"Turn the note over and take a look."
He did so, puzzled, but the four words he saw on the back made him gasp in shock.
— Jinx Star.
Who is it?
Who is impersonating him and stirring up trouble with the organization of the men in black?
