Chapter 317: Chapter 317: To Our Old Friends_1
Under the Devourer’s efforts, the squad formed by Horn Bug warriors had grown to include two members.
One of the great benefits of being a mutant creature is that even if one bypasses the upper region’s inspection checkpoints to delve into the darkness, there’s no need to worry about attacks from other mutant creatures.
Esinvig had left most of its forces in the upper regions, only taking a few officers to the shelter. Following the trail left by the Cavalry, the wolf and bug endured a long journey of nearly three hours before they finally saw the outline of the first underground city of the lower region.
The scenery along the way was somewhat shocking to Song Lan; what they encountered was not some underground experimental facility, but an entire nation submerged underground.
The Cavalry had set up relay stations along the route, with the express train being the main mode of transportation. These transportation facilities connecting various cities were controlled by Aljom, and for those explorers who wanted to delve deeper into the shelter without a pass but couldn’t attain one, they had no choice but to move forward on foot, amidst the lurking mutant creatures and Cavalry, in this place devoid of daylight.
In fact, Lu Xiang and Song Lan also opted to travel on foot, which was fortunate since the bodies of mutant creatures were far superior to humans, allowing them to maintain running for extended periods.
Along the way, they had encountered some indigenous mutant creatures, but these groups were generally unfriendly.
It seemed that they had found a way to coexist with the residents of the Fourth Neutral Country. Song Lan observed that these mutant creatures would actively avoid the relay stations and even use bright lights as bait near stations to lure explorers into their traps.
Bones littered the path, remnants of former explorers.
Even when encountering the Cavalry from the Aljom Army face to face, there was no exchange of fire. Here, a delicate balance had formed between humans and mutants, with the only targeted ones being the unfortunate souls driven out of the cities by the Cavalry.
"Even the inspection forces in the core areas aren’t this strict."
Lu Xiang lamented, noticing that even if someone managed to slip past the upper region’s checkpoints, the Cavalry would conduct screenings of passengers every time the train passed by a station.
During their arduous journey, they had even witnessed a passenger who, due to a surprise inspection, scrambled out of a train window and fled into the darkness without looking back.
Unfortunately, the passenger hadn’t managed to run far before being riddled with bullets by the Cavalry.
The passengers on the train remained calm, having apparently grown used to such scenes.
"Not only are their inspections strict, but they actually do shoot."
Riding on Lu Xiang’s back and racing along with her, Song Lan added that, at least in the core regions, there would be a formality of suspicion before any action, whereas in the Fourth Neutral Country, they would skip the intricate intermediate processes.
Following Song Lan’s strong recommendation, the revived mutant wolf creature was ultimately controlled by Lu Xiang, with the reasoning that it looked imposing and very much fit the image of a Bug Swarm leader. He then proposed a combat strategy to maximize energy conservation by having him keep watch from Lu Xiang’s back during the journey.
Lu Xiang saw through Song Lan’s little scheme immediately but didn’t call him out on it.
On one hand, the weight of the Horn Bug warrior was almost negligible, and on the other hand, she believed that life was like a roller coaster, experiencing ups and downs.
It seemed Song Lan had the upper hand for now, but there would come a time when he had to repay.
"Do you think they might have taken your teacher to the lower region and..."
"Don’t you curse it!"
Lu Xiang interrupted Song Lan in time, feeling that he might be a harbinger of doom, rarely predicting good events but always accurately foreseeing misfortunes when he mentioned them.
"I was just saying."
Song Lan watched from afar the heavily guarded underground city. Recently, a train had pulled into the station, and every passenger disembarking underwent careful scrutiny.
Just as they were at a loss, they spotted a familiar face in the crowd.
It had been more than two months since they last saw their good buddy, who had vanished without a trace. He now looked visibly haggard.
"Isn’t that ’Rat’? What’s he doing here?"
Lu Xiang clearly recognized their former associate from District Seventeen, the only one with a bounty reaching into the tens of millions.
"He’s an officer in the Rebel Army, so it makes sense for him to be here."
Song Lan exclaimed with surprise.
The appearance of "Rat," a good brother, was an unexpected delight in their current predicament. Relying on staying in one spot and waiting for the information to come by was somewhat unreliable, especially after reaching the lower areas where those who liked to talk big in public places like bars were long since driven out to feed the mutated creatures.
But "Rat" was different.
As a cadre of the Esinvig Army, he must know a lot of insider information.
"You wait for me outside the city, I’ll go and greet our good brother."
.....................
In the lower regions of the Neutral Country No.4, "Rat" felt incredibly melancholic.
Ever since joining Esinvig’s forces, he truly understood the reality behind the fame—openly opposing the United Government, dealing with well-trained assassins every day, the true depiction of life in the Rebel Army was licking blood off the knife’s edge.
He thought he had found his organization, but he never had a day of peace, and volunteering for human resources management with Aishi was definitely a foolish decision.
Those he interviewed were either the most notorious criminals from "outside" or spies and assassins trying to infiltrate their ranks from various organizations, especially after the Wild Bone incident, the number of serious offenders flocking to Esinvig doubled.
Just having these people around was a danger; even shaking hands when meeting could pain him for an entire afternoon.
And now, Esinvig had gone even further, daring to meet with the leader of another Rebel Army openly during such a sensitive period.
Listen to what those information dealers and middlemen outside were saying?
The fourth war was about to break out.
This era was about to run amok.
In the past, "Rat" couldn’t imagine that a simple meeting could evolve into a war.
After learning his lesson from being arrested and jailed, he had no more illusions about fame; lucky to have escaped with his life, all he wanted now was to live a quiet and stable life.
As a known cadre in the Esinvig Army, he really didn’t want to wade into the murky waters of Neutral Country No.4 this time. Right at this critical period, a warlord who had been bluffing in the name of the Esinvig Army appeared before him.
"Rat" suddenly had an idea.
Meeting with Aljom was of utmost importance, but someone had to stay behind to clean up the mess.
Thus, during a meeting, "Rat," who rarely spoke up, volunteered and forcefully expressed his determination to stay and deal with the aftermath.
His words impressed the other cadres, but in reality, "Rat" had already planned his escape, intending to divert a sum of military funds without anyone noticing while the cadres were busy in Neutral Country No.4, and to disappear without a trace while they were preoccupied with the United Government.
This plan was foolproof.
Until only three days remained until the Esinvig forces’ departure, that night he left the Rebel Army’s camp under the pretense of business and went to handle the aftermath alone without a single soldier.
Just as he was scheming his great escape in the inn of the post station, a shocking and terrible news spread throughout the "outside" world.
Aleye and his forces were annihilated overnight.
Then, "Rat," who was out on a mission, gained a new achievement within the Esinvig Army:
"He single-handedly eradicated Aleye’s men overnight."
The "Rat" at the post station cried without tears upon seeing this news.
He needed to make one thing clear.
Aleye died naturally, and it had nothing to do with him!
It’s the truth.
