Chapter 300: Chapter 300: Psychic Attraction Between Each Other_1
It is often said that psychic ability users are drawn to each other.
Song Lan felt that this statement was spot on, except that the attraction was not through the clashing and interaction of spiritual energies, but rather through the encounter of two people dressed in bizarre costumes at a banquet.
Neither a detective nor a cowboy were fit for a courtly banquet, and so, without even showcasing his formidable deductive skills, he had identified the psychic.
The man dressed like a cowboy sat in a corner of the banquet hall, as guests coming and going intentionally ignored his presence, as if he didn’t exist at all.
And Song Lan, dressed much like a medieval detective, also became an ignored entity.
"Having fun yet?"
The cowboy evidently had never intended to conceal his identity and, seeing Song Lan approach, introduced himself amiably, "Nice to meet you, you can call me Gustav."
"Not bad," Song Lan surveyed the banquet that seemed to only exist in cartoons, "It at least reminds me of the feeling I had when reading fairy tale books as a child."
"Really? I didn’t expect that anyone would still remember fairy tales in this day and age, I thought they had been burned to ashes along with the Third War."
Gustav appeared both surprised and emotional, "Perhaps we’ll get along."
"Are you referring to turning the entire city into a fairy-tale world?"
"I have no intention of doing so, this is merely a sample."
"A sample?"
"Seeing is believing, it’s much more direct for you to witness how spiritual energy can change the world... Simply put, I come from an organization dedicated to using spiritual energy to change the world, and we see great potential in this city."
These words immediately put Song Lan on alert, as a fellow human resources colleague, he now suspected that this man had come to District 17 to poach people.
Gustav continued, "In the past few months, this city has freed itself from the control of the Foster Family, welcoming a new mayor who has been collectively opposed by large corporations, and the tide of change has already arrived here, making us realize that you might need an ally."
"Are you the Rebel Army?"
Song Lan asked tentatively.
He remembered that Lu Xiang mentioned Gustav had come from Country 13 by long-distance bus, which had become one of the cities with the most rebels outside "The Outside".
"No, we just offer them a little help when they need it."
Like right now.
Gustav’s gaze moved past Song Lan to the courtly-styled banquet. In the reality beyond fairy tales, the motive for these people coming together was not to celebrate. This place was never truly a banquet hall, "Our current employer does not wish to see these people gather together to discuss the amendment of the ’Second Energy Agreement’, and to further plunder upon their lands."
There were many ways to achieve this, and one of the simplest and most brutal was to eliminate all corporate executives involved in the energy conference at this hotel.
But the more direct the approach, the more risks it entailed, and they always considered problems from their employer’s perspective.
"After this banquet, they will completely forget about amending the ’Second Energy Agreement’ and embrace the truly beautiful things in life."
"Same goes for Hera?"
Thinking of the witch and the frog story, Song Lan asked.
In his mind, the manager of Man Sheng Biopharmaceutical in District 17 could not possibly be someone with a brain for romance. If her mindset was changed under the influence of Gustav’s abilities, then all of this made sense.
"Man Sheng Biopharmaceutical is one of the proponents of this conference and also the largest supplier of nutritional pharmaceuticals in our employer’s country."
Controlling the supply of nutritional pharmaceuticals effectively meant having the lifeblood of the entire country in one’s grasp.
Therefore, this was a meeting where no objections would surface; the main topic of discussion was how to pillage the local energy resources more efficiently, the opinions of the local government and the people were irrelevant.
"In those remote areas, the majority of the public facilities are established by funding from large corporations; even if the local governments raised objections in diplomacy, corporations have innumerable ways to make them compromise."
"And your method is to immerse the manager of Man Sheng Biopharmaceutical in love?"
"I merely helped her recall some of the most genuine thoughts deep in her heart; no matter how cold and ruthless someone seems on the outside, there’s always a softer part hidden deep within... You should understand this better than anyone, right?"
Gustav glanced at Lu Xiang almost pointedly.
At that moment, Lu Xiang stood not far from them, but seemed utterly oblivious to the conversation, waiting in place as if nothing was happening.
"Speaking of which, this meeting is also indirectly caused by you. You drove the Foster Family away, allowing the new mayor to escape an assassination fate. Controlling the trade lines at the border is akin to cutting off the corporations’ sources of wealth—they will always find ways to recoup their losses elsewhere."
"I see."
Hearing this, Mr. Song Lan finally realized Gustav’s real purpose.
This was probably a new type of crime in 2166, whether directly rewriting others’ thoughts or invoking the other side of people’s hearts, artificially altering the outcome of the "Second Energy Agreement."
As a Law Enforcer from District 17, Mr. Song Lan had to admit...
This city needed more of this new type of crime.
At least there wouldn’t be a group of fully-armed thugs bursting into the hotel, taking out everyone attending the meeting, and eventually shifting the trouble to their department.
If Gustav’s theory wasn’t wrong, this seemed to be a peaceful way to resolve the energy conference.
After the banquet, they would voluntarily abandon the idea of amending the "Second Energy Agreement."
"It seems that you have achieved your goal."
"No, not yet."
Gustav shook his head, "As I said at the beginning, everything that happens here is a sample I provide for you, to let you understand our methods more directly."
Compared to changing the outcome of one energy conference, he was on a far more arduous mission this time.
"Mr. Song Lan, don’t you think your psychic abilities should find a broader stage? Forgive my bluntness, no matter what changes occur in District 17, they are insufficient to alter the pattern of the United Government and this world."
"And you can?"
"Psychic abilities are the best tool to correct this world, far more secretive and efficient than any other method."
The sample unfolding in the hotel illustrated how they used abilities to solve an impending energy crisis for their employer without shedding blood.
The inevitable still arrived.
Despite being prepared, Mr. Song Lan’s heart still "thudded."
When you walk by the river often, it’s hard not to get your shoes wet.
As a recruiter, he too had the day when someone proposed to him "join us."
Although Gustav spoke amicably, seemingly wanting to befriend him, what he just disclosed contained a vast amount of information and made Mr. Song Lan realize that there was an organization "correcting" the world in their way.
"May I boldly ask, how many things have you ’corrected’ before this?"
"That’s for you to imagine."
