Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Inspection of Work_1

Lu Xiang accepted Valerian’s advice, but she knew that it required the right approach.

If she were to barge into Song Lan’s department first thing in the morning to reprimand him in front of everyone, while she could certainly use her director’s status to make Song Lan work harder, it is undeniably awkward and would surely provoke him to be more defiant.

As mentioned in "A Love Tip Every Day", a great girlfriend never embarrasses her boyfriend in public.

On the way, Lu Xiang had already figured out a solution.

Although she may not be proficient in romantic relationships, she was highly skilled at managing subordinates. During her school days, they had an entire semester dedicated to a management course.

The first step she planned to take was to stir Song Lan’s sense of guilt.

Therefore, the employees in the enforcement branch were shocked one morning when the highest superior of their department came to inspect their work early in the day.

Even though they all belonged to the same department, not to mention Director Lu Xiang, they had rarely had any interactions even with those from the special operations team actively battling crime at the frontlines.

Lu Xiang scanned the entire office - there were employees watching movies, playing video games, applying makeup, or eating snacks...

In any case, aside from doing their legitimate work, there was all sorts of other activities being carried out.

At that moment, she felt as if she had stepped into another world from the enforcement department.

Everyone in the logistics department had thought that Director Lu would be furious upon seeing this situation. The worst-case scenario they imagined involved her severely reprimanding the department head, docking bonuses, and loading them up with work. However, contrary to everyone’s expectations, after witnessing everyone goofing off, Lu Xiang did not storm towards the department head’s desk in a fit of anger. Instead, she moved a chair directly in front of Song Lan’s desk.

She put the chair next to Song Lan, leaned her elbows on the table, propped her chin in both hands, and began watching the movie with him.

Everyone had to rub their eyes hard to confirm that they were not seeing things wrongly.

Could it be...

Did the vibe of slacking off spread that quickly?

"Director Lu, what are you doing?"

Song Lan felt like he was on pins and needles. He didn’t enjoy being the focus of the entire department, but now, it was hard not to be the center of attention.

Just imagine, you are caught slacking off at work by the department’s top executive, and instead of giving you a dressing-down, she pulls up a chair to join you in slacking off.

"Inspecting your work. What about you?"

Lu Xiang replied fluidly.

"I’m studying the inner meaning of the rescuer’s spirit."

"Good, I’ll study it with you."

Could she really be coming over to study!

At this point, all the coworkers in the department had their attention on him, wildly signalling Song Lan with their eyes -- find a way to get rid of Director Lu, her presence here seriously interferes with everyone’s slacking off efficiency!

Song Lan tried to pass the buck to the department head. However, after catching eye contact with the bald man, he quickly retreated behind his computer screen, pretending to be hard at work.

"Well, Director Lu, is there anything I can do to help you outside?"

"A group of stowaways just arrived from the ’outside world’ yesterday. We need someone to soothe them now. But it’s alright, you can continue studying the inner meaning of the rescuer’s spirit."

"I’ll go. There’s always time to learn about the inner meaning."

Song Lan stood up and said, at that moment, his peers cast admiring, heroic eyes towards him.

From a slacker, a hero emerges.

He sacrificed himself, drew away the leader, and secured more time and space for everyone to continue goofing off.

However, he had never thought he would ever be seen as a hero in this way.

Before long, Song Lan, with a tablet borrowed from the statistics department, came to the large conference room temporarily vacated for the stowaways. Most of them were still asleep after the enforcement team had handed out bedding and blankets the night before.

This was his second encounter with these stowaways.

After being brought back to the department, they had showered, their wounds had been bandaged, and they had put on clean clothes. They looked much more human-like than when he saw them yesterday.

In fact, for Song Lan, this wasn’t a bad job.

Although the Foster Family’s attention was entirely on Lainal at the moment, there was still a "cargo" very important to them hidden among these refugees.

Just as Song Lan surveyed the entire room, trying to guess who among them might be the "cargo" the Foster Family was after, someone tugged at his ankle.

"Sir, don’t chase us away."

Glancing down, he noticed the elderly man lying near the door had awakened. The old man’s eyes were filled with terror and unease. His right arm was covered with horrifying scars. It seemed that while in the iron cage, the old man had borne the brunt of Lainal’s and his minions’ "care".

"If you send us back, we’re as good as dead."

"Old man, it’s not what you think."

Song Lan hurriedly bent down to help the man up. Being called "sir" by a person two or three generations older than him and being almost pleaded with gave him a restless feeling, "I’m only here to help, please tell me exactly what happened."

The old man, relieved at being helped up, spilled everything he knew like a person grasping at straws.

Through the old man’s narrative, Song Lan came to understand that in the "outer world", there were actually settlements and even nations. Prior to this, under the United Government’s brainwashing propaganda, he had thought the "outer world" was only full of terribly wicked criminals.

These refugees were mostly natives born in settlements relatively near Sector 17. These settlements, in order to survive in areas lack of legal protection, usually sought a strong patron, specifically the heavily wanted criminals by the United Government.

In return for their protection, these criminals would routinely visit the tribes to collect money, resources, and food.

A good number of them could no longer bear this anxiety-ridden life and had therefore paid Chai Ke to help them smuggle into Sector 17.

However, upon reaching Sector 17, they realized they had been deceived.

Lainal did not keep his promise to provide them with jobs and a place to live. Instead, his people singled out the pretty girls and the strong men. The rest were shackled and thrown into iron cages. Then, they were stored like goods in a dark basement.

Lainal’s men often took forbidden drugs. Each time they were high, they used the prisoners as objects to vent their frustrations on. They whipped them, cut their skin with daggers, enjoyed their painful expressions. This seemed to be their unique way of finding pleasure.

Those who couldn’t take it and died were dragged away by Lainal’s men and no one knew where their bodies ended up.

Song Lan all the old man’s accounts were recorded in the tablet.

When the old man finished speaking, he comforted him, saying, "Don’t worry. Lainal and his cronies are done for. The law will penalize them."

Even though what he said seemed insincere

They were indeed done for.

But the main reason was not due to the laws enacted by the United Government, but because the Foster Family wanted them to shut up forever.

Regarding trial and judgement, the Foster Family has the final say.

"I don’t care if they live or die."

The old man shook his head, "I just hope you won’t drive us away. Please!"
