Chapter 286: Chapter 286: Lunar Eclipse, Making Your Life Better_1

Tonight, the prosthetic hospital collaborating with Log Bar was exceptionally pleased.

Yet another fighter, whose body had been extensively modified with prosthesis, was declared dead upon arrival; they weren’t interested in how the underground boxer, who had turned himself into something resembling a War Chariot, had been beaten to death without any apparent external injuries, because they had much work to do next.

For instance, they needed to dismantle the deceased’s gorilla arms and subdermal armor, then, after suitable repairs and modifications, allow them to flow into the black market.

"Poorly fitted prosthesis can greatly increase the probability of the user becoming a Cyber maniac, and private prosthetic trading is strictly prohibited by law."

An untimely voice suddenly echoed through the dissection room.

The Prosthetic Doctors looked in the direction of the voice and only then noticed the unexpected visitor—a girl with braids that looked somewhat rustic, her old-fashioned black-rimmed glasses hiding her features, but from their years of prosthetic experience, they could tell that this girl was a beauty.

"Where are the guards? How did you get in?"

The Prosthetic Doctor holding a circular saw asked darkly, taking the opportunity to brandish the "weapon" in his hand menacingly at her.

"I slipped in," said the girl with the braids, pointing to the corpse on the hospital bed. "You’re planning to take his prosthesis, modify it a bit, and then sell it on the black market, right?"

"Ha, another meddling little girl."

The two Prosthetic Doctors chimed in, "We’ve already dissected no less than 56 meddling girls like you."

"What was the cause of this boxer’s death?"

She pointed at the body lying on the dissection table and asked.

"Didn’t you hear what we just said? We are..."

"I’m giving you a chance to make amends," she interrupted.

As soon as she spoke, her presence completely overwhelmed them; although she looked like a simple, rustic girl, a glare from her made their legs go weak, and they nearly collapsed to the floor.

...

A short while later, Song Lan, standing outside a residential building in District 17, received a call from Lu Xiang.

"The Prosthetic Doctor said the victim died suddenly. He had injected prohibited drugs before the match, which put an enormous strain on his body."

Sudden deaths were medically murky, and they could only speculate a relatively reasonable explanation based on the laboratory results, "The previous victim sent here had a similar situation, both had used large amounts of prohibited drugs before their matches."

The medical explanations for the deaths of both were plausible.

Intense exercise combined with excessive use of banned drugs, each year in District 17 the number of such sudden deaths could fill several morgues.

If she was to view this situation through the lens of murder, she suspected it might be that Snick had added some "additives" to the drugs the two had taken before their matches, killing them both unnoticed after they engaged in high-intensity activities.

After roughly explaining the clues she had uncovered at the prosthetic hospital, she turned to ask, "How are things on your end?"

"He just got home; he looks just like an ordinary citizen."

Not long ago, the crime investigation department provided information about Snick.

Nashi, male, 40 years old.

A few months ago, he was a worker in an electronics factory in District 17, but he became one of many unemployed due to the downturn of the electronics industry.

During these months, he found several jobs, but was invariably dismissed due to his age.

Section Chief Snick speculated that Nashi must have heard about the high prize money of the underground boxing match, which sparked his interest in competing.

And this was the most bizarre part of the case.

According to the records, Nashi was just an ordinary laid-off worker, equipped neither with combat prostheses nor had he taken any body-modifying drugs. Indeed, with his family’s current economic status, they simply couldn’t afford such drugs.

Yet under these circumstances, Nashi still signed up for the competition without hesitation, locking himself in the same cage as opponents whose degree of prosthesis modification was like war chariots.

And before the two fights, Nashi had exhibited some suspicious behavior—he’d bet 50 watts on his own victory.

This made Song Lan subconsciously think that Nashi had suddenly awakened some kind of ability, or that he had always been a hidden master, but his subsequent actions forced Song Lan to reconsider this problem.

"I recorded it; you should take a look yourself," said Song Lan.

Song Lan sent the video he had just recorded to Lu Xiang.

When Nashi arrived home, it was already past one in the morning, the light in the living room was still on, and his wife, who had been anxiously waiting on the sofa, immediately greeted him. Although the wounds on his face had been given basic treatment, the part that was beaten out of shape would not recover in a hurry.

He was beaten up by hoodlums on the way home.

That was Nashi’s explanation for his injuries, and then he handed over the money he had won with the 50-watt bet to his wife.

A kind-hearted boss had offered him a job with good pay, the company’s benefits were good, and they even provided each employee with nutritional injections. Other than longer work hours, there was nothing to complain about.

Only that recently he had bad luck; when his boss was handing out the pay, he happened to be seen by some street thugs, and he struggled desperately to keep this hard-earned salary.

When mentioning his escape from the street thugs with his salary in hand, Nashi proudly spoke with animation in his voice, as if that thrilling chase had really taken place.

After promising his wife that he would report the incident to the Law Enforcers the next day, the worried wife finally felt relieved.

Then, Nashi tiptoed into the bedroom, cracked the bedroom door open, and peering at his already asleep child through the faint light coming from the living room, he quickly closed the door when the child turned over.

He said he still had some work to deal with and told his wife to go back to their room and rest.

Once Nashi was alone in the living room, his expression changed significantly, seemingly cringing in pain, his eyebrows knit together, and his left hand clutching his chest as he slumped on the sofa.

It took him a full two or three minutes to recover from the sensation of his body falling apart.

When the living room was silent again, he turned on his very old computer with the last of his strength, as if he couldn’t wait.

Only after ensuring there was no more noise from the bedroom did he open a website.

The contents of the website seemed to momentarily make Nashi forget about his physical pain, transporting him to a world beyond reality in his mind.

The text and images were thriving.
