Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Truly Dodged a Bullet_1

Ultimately, fear suppressed rationality. As the first man dropped his gun on the ground, everyone in the room hurriedly followed suit, as if fearing that they would be next in line if they were even a moment slower.

For those in the room, the real terror was not that their leader had been defeated but that they had no idea how their opponent had accomplished it.

No one saw how he got in, nor did they know how he avoided the hail of bullets. While they were celebrating, he had silently taken down their boss.

Against all logic, beyond their imagination, they dared not defy Song Lan’s order.

"Anyone willing to explain the situation?"

The smiling mask lingered on every face, finally resting on the man who had led him in. The man had now fully recovered from the hallucinogens, shaking as he tried to hide behind a chair.

Song Lan wouldn’t give him such an opportunity. If he were to choose the person closest to breaking down in the room, it would undoubtedly be this "Guide".

Under such circumstances, the more one’s emotions collapse, the slower their thinking becomes, and the answers given are closer to the truth.

"You."

Song Lan beckoned to him with his index finger.

Now, he had to assume the identity of Mr. Killer, treating these people with a winter-like coldness.

As the "Guide" trembled while detailing the situation, Song Lan was able to roughly understand why these people had gathered in this gloomy, sunless basement.

Everything, inevitably, led back to the original criminal, Chai Ke.

Song Lan couldn’t help but sigh, perhaps it was some sort of fate.

The people locked in the cages were part of Chai Ke’s business operations. These people from the "outside" paid Chai Ke for the chance to enter Zone 17. However, business had hit a snag. An accident occurred before Chai Ke could decide their fate.

The muscular man lying on the floor was a minor leader under the Chai Ke Group. A few days ago, they heard about the recent status of other group leaders — Chai Ke’s power collapsed in just two short days after his death, with most of the wanted criminals who used to strut about Zone 17 dying unnatural deaths for various reasons.

Knowing the methods of the Foster Family, they knew this was no coincidence, but the Family’s clean-up operation.

Losing Chai Ke as a backer, they had become worthless.

Yet, as worthless as they were, they knew far too much.

To survive, they planned to flee to the outside world with these "goods", far away after securing some money. However, before they could put this plan into action, Song Lan showed up.

After much contemplation, Song Lan finally found his place in the situation.

Turns out...

He was there to silence them.

Moreover, among the people locked in the cages, there were also "goods" that the Foster Family was interested in.

What puzzled him was that the order issued by the Foster Family was ambiguous, mentioning only ’collecting the goods’, but not providing any names or characteristics.

Song Lan guessed that, even for an assassin who handled their aftermath, they would never place 100 percent trust.

In this room, there were a total of 17 remnants of Chai Ke. On the hard bed lay three women, their bodies covered with sheets, unconscious, and looking much cleaner than the prisoners in the cages.

As to why they were unconscious, Song Lan thought it better for his mental health not to delve too deeply.

"So, you all know why I’m here."

Having obtained all the information he needed, it was now time to handle the task given to him by the Foster Family.

Hearing this, all people in the room showed profound despair.

Even so, they were frozen in place, no one dared to even bend over and pick up a gun - because they were certain that the first to pick up a gun would undoubtedly be the first to die.

The pale-faced "Guide" obviously still wanted to struggle for the last time, "But... you promised..."

"All I said was that if you didn’t drop your guns, you would all definitely die. I never promised anything."

All eyes were on Song Lan, staring at his raised right foot hanging over the leader’s head. The cold voice behind the mask made them lose all hope, "All in all, you’ve come out ahead. Try to look on the bright side - at least you’ve lived five minutes longer than if you hadn’t dropped your guns."

Time seemed to stop at this moment. They could already imagine the bloody scene that was about to unfold.

As Song Lan’s right foot fell, the leader’s head would crack open like a watermelon, splattering pink liquid everywhere.

They instinctively held their breaths, then...

Time seemed to truly stop.

The oppressive scene froze, until someone finally sensed that something was awry. They had to use their eyes to confirm whether only their time had been "frozen".

They were prepared for their boss to be killed on the spot, but he was still alive after so long.

What...?

Did the killer encounter a glitch?

Just as they were considering whether to pick up the guns on the ground and fight the killer, the sound of a door being kicked open interrupted everyone’s thoughts.

Before they could react, a hypnosis bomb rolled in from the entrance.

"Don’t move, we are the Law Enforcers!"

At this moment, Song Lan, who had seemed to "freeze up", seemed to finally wake up from his dream.

In the face of this sudden situation, he did not crush the leader’s head with his foot.

Under the influence of the hypnosis bomb, before the criminals completely lost consciousness, they clearly saw Song Lan slowly moving his suspended right foot away.

"Huh, I didn’t expect the Law Enforcers to butt in."

The voice behind the mask was still cold, "You guys sure are lucky."

..................

Moments later, in the underground storage room of the Old Man Printing Factory.

"Supervisor, the situation is completely under control."

The captain of the Third Special Operations Team reported to Lu Xiang after bundling up all the unconscious remnants of Chai Ke, "We’ve found Lainal Boyev."

Lainal Boyev was one of the minor leaders of the Chai Ke Group. This man carried his rotary gun wherever he went, and all his subordinates were armed with heavy firepower. If a close-quarters battle broke out with them, the weapons of the Law Enforcers wouldn’t necessarily guarantee their victory.

They were initially prepared to go all out against Lainal Boyev before the operation, but the action turned out to be surprisingly smooth. They caught Lainal and his men in one go with just a hypnosis bomb.

"Bring them back first."
