Chapter 244: Chapter 244: Crazy, but Not Completely Crazy_1

After giving first aid to one of the least injured street thugs, Lu Xiang summoned him into the interrogation room.

The thug cried out as soon as he saw Lu Xiang, "This is a misunderstanding, we actually left the gang a long time ago!"

She hadn’t even asked anything yet, and the thug had already spilled the beans on the criminal records of his group.

In the world of crime, this is what you’d call a prime example of a liability to the team.

The problems he confessed to were enough to send all six of them to a remote prison.

"So you’re saying that you’re Hyena’s underlings?"

Lu Xiang confirmed.

"After the boss was caught by you guys, the remaining members split into several factions. We formed a small gang in Mosden District. There was still a batch of military weapons that had come from ’outside’ that hadn’t been dealt with. We went to the storage point and took the weapons back, and usually made a living by selling guns."

"Didn’t you just say you had already left the gang?"

"We left the gang, but let me finish,"

The street thug’s face changed, "Just one week ago, one night when we were going to meet a buyer to deliver the goods, we were suddenly attacked. The brothers who delivered the goods and the buyer were all killed."

"The garment factory in the northern outskirts of Mosden District?"

This was one of the cases they had recently received. Due to the remote location, it was hours before the Horn Bug surveillance team discovered the bodies.

Whoever the killer was, at the very least it was clear they were decisive and efficient, managing to kill everyone at the scene in a very short time without causing too much of an uproar.

The weapon used by the killer was also unusual for a gang firefight.

A silenced "Red Star TR-3000," an experimental anti-materiel weapon. A bullet from such a weapon could shatter a body not reinforced with sub-dermal armor; even with armor, it would leave a fist-sized bloodied hole.

Few would use such a weapon in a gang fight.

Therefore, when the special response team arrived on site, the scene could only be described as horrific.

Yet when the crime analysis division checked, they could only come up with the possibility of a gang fight. Besides gang-on-gang violence, it was hard for them to imagine who in the 17th District would bother to target these gang remnants.

"Yes, yes, that’s the place! It was a big deal, we lost more than a dozen brothers in one go!"

The street thug nodded frantically, haunted by the bloody scene for several days.

"So you just decided to disband the gang? That doesn’t seem like your style."

From Lu Xiang’s perspective, the defining feature of the 17th District gangsters was their resilience, akin to indestructible cockroaches. When faced with gang-on-gang violence, they usually wouldn’t swallow their pride and often retaliated with even more intense and brutal measures. In the past, a gang fight that cost more than a dozen members wasn’t even big news in the 17th District.

"You gotta be kidding, the other party was a Cyber psycho!"

The thug’s eyes bulged, showing a look of deep horror, "That guy is going around targeting gang members. You might’ve as well send me to the prison, it’s probably safer there."

Cyber psycho?

This term made Lu Xiang pause for quite some time.

Usually, this term appears in cities where combat prosthesis is very common. According to scientific reports, when the degree of prosthetic implantation is too high, the individual is very likely to suffer from a condition similar to mania, characterized by indiscriminately killing those around them.

The term first appeared in the military, where some of the old soldiers who had received the first batch of military-grade prosthetic implants displayed such symptoms more or less. The enhanced combat abilities of these Cyber psychos, bolstered by their implants, were astonishing, and local Law Enforcers couldn’t handle them.

And at the "Abnormal Case Investigation Bureau," where she had aspired to work before her graduation, investigating and dealing with Cyber psycho cases was a very important part of the job.

To contain the spread of Cyber mental illness, the research departments of the United Government proposed an assessment for prosthetic implantation:

For ordinary citizens, the implantation degree of a combat prosthesis should not exceed 20%.

For some with special physiques and a high compatibility with prosthetics, the implantation degree could be increased to 40%-60%. Once they reached this level, they were qualified to work in some key enforcement departments.

Those who were still sane after exceeding 60% were few and far between, and they were not of a caliber someone at her level would see.

But...

A cyber fanatic appearing in District 17?

Lu Xiang felt this was utterly nonsensical, as there were thresholds to becoming a cyber fanatic.

To have combat prosthetic implantation exceeding 20% and simultaneously a military-grade operating system, if someone really could get their hands on such a body, their combat capabilities would already surpass Chai Ke by a great margin.

What’s going on?

Nowadays, criminals feel embarrassed to greet people unless they are stronger than Chai Ke?

In her view, Chai Ke obviously didn’t understand prosthetic implantation technology; though his implantation reached 21%, he never implanted the crucial operating system, making it difficult for him to fully utilize the combat prosthetics’ capabilities. At the 20% level, he was considered inferior goods.

"Are you sure the killer was a cyber fanatic?"

Lu Xiang asked.

This street thug claimed the assailant specifically targeted gang members, which meant that even if the killer was indeed a cyber fanatic, they were still the kind that could maintain their sanity.

"Anyway, it was definitely not a gang shootout. After we lost contact with the brother who made the drop that day, we rushed over. The goods and the money were all there, untouched. The killing was obviously the goal... The next day we asked around with our previous contacts and found out they had experienced similar incidents recently—the guy kills but doesn’t loot; what else could he be, if not a cyber fanatic?"

If it had been another gang, they would have already grabbed their weapons and sought revenge.

"By the way, I happen to know someone from the streets who seems to know something about that cyber fanatic."

"Bring him here."

"Here? To the Law Enforcers department?"

The street thug said, "Although he’s been having a tough time lately, he’s not an idiot."

"You pick a place, get him to meet you."

"Fine, but I have a condition."

"Hmm?"

"Since I’m definitely going to jail, you have to help me get placed in the boss’s block."

"Can do."

...........

Half an hour later, Mosden District abandoned factory.

A luxury sedan slowly stopped at the factory entrance, and out stepped a person dressed in hip-hop fashion, with a gold chain on his lip and a pair of sunglasses.

The street thug nervously greeted him, "Yo, brother, long time no see."

"Long time no see."

After performing the "Hyena" gang’s unique greeting, the intermediary handed him a cigarette and took out a cross-shaped lighter, asking, "You said you were looking into that cyber fanatic?"

"You must’ve heard about the incident a few days ago, that fanatic took down a dozen of our brothers."

"I know, but..."

The intermediary extended the lighter.

However, all his words halted in that moment.

The street thug’s pupils dilated, and a viscous liquid splattered all over him. Just a moment ago, he had clearly seen his friend’s head pop like an exploding balloon, turning into a mushy mess.

The intermediary still stood there, maintaining the gesture of helping to light the cigarette.

The gold chain on his mouth fell to the ground without support, the silver-white cross-shaped lighter was now stained with a bright red hue.
