Chapter 239: Chapter 239: Heading to the landfill_1

Happiness is always fleeting.

After arriving in District Seventeen, Heavy Cannon and his team had a few days of relaxed tranquility, a rare experience where they didn’t have to fight tooth and nail for commissions from the moment they opened their eyes each day.

During these days, several pieces of world-shaking news occurred.

The most eye-catching was that the bounties for Esinvig and his cadre had nearly doubled, with his own bounty breaking the unprecedented mark of five hundred million volts.

This was because Wild Bone, the Six Stars rescuer, was defeated by the Rebel Army.

It was also the first time the United Government had released news of a Six Stars rescuer’s defeat since its establishment.

This event also pushed their bounties to over five hundred thousand volts each, for the crime of abducting Dr. Bai Zhu. Ironically, the United Government, not the Sixth Nation, issued the wanted notices.

After Wild Bone fell into the hands of the Rebel Army, the United Government was truly enraged. Online, people were in a state of panic, speculating that it might not be long before the two sides would go to war, possibly on a scale even larger than the Third War, and it was uncertain which side would fall.

Since Dr. Bai Zhu’s disappearance, the United Government was much more anxious than the Sixth Nation, fearing that he might fall into the hands of anyone other than themselves.

However, this indicated that Director Lu of the law enforcers in District Seventeen had truly kept his promise and had not reported them and Bai Zhu to the United Government.

But life had to go on, and after vehemently denouncing the actions of the United Government at their temporary residence, they had to plan for their future.

Returning to the Sixth Nation was completely out of the question, and a bounty of over five hundred thousand volts meant their careers as mercenaries were definitively over. For their peers in the Neutral Country, turning them in to the United Government would be far more profitable than fulfilling those commissions.

Just as they felt lost about their future, Lu Xiang found them and offered an exit they had never considered.

Working at the garbage dump.

They would be security personnel, in a relaxed working environment, with salaries provided by the Law Enforcers department, and even employee benefits.

Only...

"Isn’t this a bit too contemptuous?"

After Lu Xiang had left, "Heavy Metal Rock" grumbled indignantly.

The issue of salary and employee benefits was secondary; working at the garbage dump, in his opinion, seemed like a way to get rid of them by assigning them to an inconsequential place.

"Let’s go and see for ourselves first."

Even though Heavy Cannon had the same thought, he had learned a great deal since arriving in District Seventeen, including the most important lesson: not to be deceived by appearances. Whether it was the appearance of the counter-terrorism elites or Lu Xiang’s attitude towards them, it all seemed contrary to common sense, and the garbage dump she mentioned might not be just a traditional waste disposal site.

"Do you remember the thing the counter-terrorism elites mentioned before? They picked up that off-road vehicle from the garbage dump."

Although it appeared somewhat outdated on the outside, its features were no less impressive than any top-of-the-line off-road vehicle on the market today, and on top of that, it even had additional features like an automatic turret and other attack systems.

With intense curiosity, the Heavy Cannon team drove to the garbage dump Lu Xiang had mentioned.

Gazing out, what they saw was a vast expanse of household and electronic waste, but surprisingly, in a place piled with so much garbage, there was no stench in the air; it was as though someone had installed a giant air purifier here.

"Is anyone there?"

Heavy Cannon found a high point in the piles of garbage and called out towards the depths of the massive waste dump.

Shortly after, a garbage dump worker appeared before them in an extremely eerie manner.

He was equipped with something that greatly resembled exoskeleton armor, which allowed him to move across the garbage field with ease. However, upon closer inspection, they noticed that the joints of the exoskeleton were filled with twitching flesh buds, and the worker, adorned with the exoskeleton, seemed to be in a highly unstable mental state, his eyes bulging like brass bells, gazing at them with the same look one reserves for prey.

"Damn, he’s infected!"

The three of them immediately raised their guns.

They had previously received a commission to investigate a village that had lost contact. When they arrived at their destination, they found the village empty, with no signs of fighting or destruction. It was as if everyone had simply vanished into thin air. To get to the truth, they decided to spend a night in the village.

In the middle of the night, they were startled awake by noises outside the door. What appeared before them were villagers who had been parasitized by some creature.

The Infected.

That was the name they gave to these villagers.

After discovering them, the villagers showed extreme aggression, and it took all their strength to fight their way out through the blockade of the Infected.

It was definitely the most heart-stopping experience of their mercenary careers. Later, they heard from the intermediary that a few weeks after they left, a large corporation from the United Government went to investigate the village and seemed to have encountered an attack by the Infected too. After their personnel withdrew, they nuked the village with a tactical nuclear bomb.

Now, the village has been completely wiped off the map of the Neutral Country.

"Ge Fu, I told you, you’ll scare them like this."

A sudden voice from behind startled all three men. When they turned toward the source of the sound, they saw a woman lying on the ground, looking up at them.

The woman’s body was enveloped in a transparent shell, and she had a pair of insect-like wings on her back. She watched them with her pupil-less eyes, which managed to send shivers down their spines even in broad daylight.

However, what the woman said next left them somewhat at a loss, "You must be the security that Director Lu referred. My name is Medea, follow me, I’ll show you around and familiarize you with the situation here."

Is this...

An Infected with a self-awareness?

"Should we shoot or not?"

Watching Medea crawl away in a strange manner, "Heavy Metal" whispered, admitting to himself that he was bewildered by the scene before him.

"Hold your fire for now, let’s follow and see."

"Heavy Cannon" put away his gun and took the lead, setting an example for the other two.

There was definitely something strange about this city.

But as a knife-edge mercenary and the captain of this squad, no matter what happened next, he wouldn’t lose his composure again.

"Holy shit—!"

A few minutes later, "Heavy Cannon’s" loud voice echoed throughout the entire junkyard. The sudden appearance of the giant worm scared him into staggering back several steps, and he screamed, landing on his butt on the ground.

He had the misfortune of landing squarely on some slightly sharp electronic waste, which caused him to perform an impromptu launch back to his feet.

"This is the Devourer, no need to worry, it has learned human language,"

Medea introduced to the stunned group, "It’s your most important partner from now on."

"I have just one question."

In front of this gigantic creature, "Heavy Cannon" behaved as meekly as a primary school student, even lowering his voice when he raised his hand to ask, "Does this Devourer... really need our protection?"
