Chapter 229: Chapter 229: So You’re the Famous Counter-Terrorism Expert?_1

Counter-terrorism elite?

Is this person military?

But hasn’t the regular army of the Sixth Nation almost entirely been replaced by military combat robots?

After Song Lan announced his identity, the security at Tombstone Pub didn’t continue to block him, instead making way for him.

Almost the moment he entered, a pungent smell of frozen meat assaulted his nostrils. Although summer was nearly upon them, the Tombstone was cold like an ice cellar, and the dim blue lighting added to the atmosphere, making it seem like a morgue. Coupled with the unlucky name, Song Lan really didn’t know what kind of owner would design their bar this way.

It was obvious that this wasn’t a place for drinking and having fun.

The bar’s layout was somewhat similar to Gold Diggers’ Bar in District Seventeen, with the bar divided into multiple private rooms where business was conducted.

At present, the atmosphere in the bar was deadly serious; firearms and anti-material weapons were displayed on the tables, and the assembled mercenaries were almost all wearing bulletproof vests, looking poised for action. Song Lan soon realized that most of the mercenaries in the bar were part of teams, and after he walked around the hall, he clearly didn’t fit in with his surroundings.

He had intended to blend into a team unnoticed and naturally become one of them. However, the team mercenaries all knew each other, and he hadn’t even gotten close before they shot him wary and dismissive looks.

The mercenaries of the Sixth Nation were just too unwelcoming, isolating him, the rookie mercenary, making his current mood as cold as winter.

In all honesty, Song Lan felt that he could still be of some help in case of an encounter.

"Lone wolf?"

Seeing Song Lan get a cold reception and then come to the bar alone, the bartender spoke with a hint of amusement in her voice. Although the newcomer wore a hood, she could tell his current mood from his eyes.

It was probably similar to that of a student who was left over after the class had freely formed teams, looking pitiful.

"Yeah, I’m accustomed to going it alone," Song Lan said in a deep voice.

As long as he claimed to be a lone wolf, the awkwardness of being ostracized by the mercenaries couldn’t catch up with him.

"Here, this one’s on me."

The bartender here was as warm as Ivan, mixing two kinds of alcohol that Song Lan couldn’t name, adding some orange juice, and then two ice cubes. "Today’s situation is a bit special; everyone wants to act with people they trust."

"It’s okay, I can manage on my own."

"Ha, then you’d better be careful."

The bartender didn’t argue with Song Lan, pushing the mixed drink toward him. "What’s your name?"

"Why are you suddenly asking this?"

"If you’re sacrificed in the upcoming operation, at least someone will remember you were here."

"Counter-terrorism elite; that’s how people who know me call me."

Before departing, he and Lu Xiang had agreed on his new persona—former member of a special action team, who later left the team after a case and the city, becoming a mercenary wandering in Neutral Countries. Anyone who knew their stuff could tell that his bulletproof vest and outfit were standard issue.

Although Song Lan still hadn’t figured out exactly what operation the bartender was referring to, he seemed to have arrived just in time.

"Counter-terrorism elite? Okay, I’ll remember that."

During their conversation, the time on the screen above the bar jumped to 21:00.

At that moment, the atmosphere in the bar grew even tenser.

Merenaries near the innermost private room entered the door, and for a moment, everyone’s gaze turned towards the deepest part of the bar.

About ten minutes later, fully armed mercenaries came out.

The leader was a burly man with dark skin, and after looking at the information on his phone screen, he grasped the silvery cross around his neck with his right hand, which had been transformed into a metallic texture. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and brought the cross to his lips.

This group of mercenaries is mostly doomed.

Although Song Lan didn’t recognize these people and had no idea what mission they had taken on, according to common tropes in movies, this was a sign of bad luck, on par with a soldier looking at pictures of his girlfriend or child before a big battle.

Before heading out, this person had set a death flag for his own team.

Moreover, from the bartender’s few words, it wasn’t hard to surmise that the mission was extremely dangerous.

The mercenary team entered the innermost room one after another, and the expression on each person’s face when they came out was very serious. Song Lan estimated that over eighty percent of the mercenaries had performed actions similar to setting a flag.

This was very different from the profit-oriented mercenaries he was aware of. He felt that these people weren’t accepting a job that could bring them fame and wealth overnight, but rather it seemed as if they were embracing a cause with a resignation to death.

They probably all knew that the end point of this cause was death.

Nearly an hour passed, and the bar gradually emptied out.

Song Lan rose to his feet and headed towards the innermost room. He was now curious as to what sort of cause was worth all of the mercenaries risking life and limb.

This mission probably had something to do with the Rebel Army and Wild Bone.

However, before he could enter, a tall figure stepped in front of him, blocking his path. The man was clad in a punk-style black jacket, and when he grinned, he revealed a mouth full of gold teeth. Without waiting for Song Lan to speak, he extended his right hand in a friendly manner, "Nice to meet you. You must be the famous counter-terrorism elite, right?"

Song Lan didn’t recognize the man before him. The title of counter-terrorism elite was probably overheard while he was entering or chatting with the bartender.

"You are...?"

"People who know me call me ’Heavy Cannon.’ They’re all members of our team," the man said with a smile.

There were only three people in his team, including himself. Among the many mercenaries, this was one of the teams with the fewest members.

"Yo, my nickname is ’Heavy Metal Rock.’ Easy to remember, right?"

The seemingly overly familiar young man flashed a "V" sign at Song Lan, introducing himself with a title that was even more perplexing than counter-terrorism elite.

"Ghost."

The woman with red short hair, wearing something resembling a tight battle suit, spoke coldly.

Seeing her reaction, the familiar young man quickly added, "Don’t mind her usually being so cold. She’s actually really nice."

After introducing themselves, the man calling himself "Heavy Cannon" said, "I see you’re alone. Why don’t you join us? It’s good to have more people watching each other’s backs."

"I don’t mind."

Song Lan nodded. Being unfamiliar with the area, having a local to look out for him would make his subsequent actions much easier.

Moreover, this could also sufficiently prove that he wasn’t the one without a team.

"Great, ’Heavy Metal Rock’ here is a professional hacker, the kind of expert who can easily hack a building’s security system. ’Ghost’ is our team’s sniper, and you can rest assured letting her cover you. As for me..."

At this point, "Heavy Cannon" leaned over and opened the weapon case he carried with him. Inside was an anti-tank rocket launcher, "Leave the enemy’s vehicles to me... What are you good at? We probably have weapons here that you can use."

"I’m a bit of a jack of all trades," Song Lan said after thinking it over, vaguely.

He realized that this team had a traditional composition, and his identity as a Psychic Ability User would probably clash with them.

"Sidewinder."

As he spoke, "Heavy Cannon" handed over a somewhat heavy rifle to Song Lan, "Then I’ll leave the covering fire to you."
