Chapter 227: Chapter 227: Infected No., Set Sail_1
The imminent battle between the Rebel Army and one of the United Government’s highest combat forces required better persuasion efforts, so Song Lan visited the garbage dump military base in District 17 before heading to the Sixth Nation, deploying a squadron of mechanical Horn Bugs.
Upon his arrival, Ge Fu started to incessantly boast about the achievements they had made over the month.
Compared to a month ago, his complexion had improved significantly, free from the dark circles caused by long nights, thanks to Medea’s supervisory role.
One of her daily tasks was to ensure Ge Fu got his rest on schedule.
In Song Lan’s view, technological development was a long-term endeavor; he didn’t want their hard-won engineers burning out within a year.
Song Lan had to admit, every time he saw Ge Fu, the man always had some new trick up his sleeve.
For instance, now, upon mentioning he was heading out on a business trip "outside," Ge Fu immediately began to communicate with the Devourer. Minutes later, amidst the mountainous piles of electronic waste, there was a disturbance, followed by an extremely outdated-looking sedan appearing before Song Lan.
From the outside, the car looked battered and worn, as if it had been discarded here after being scrapped. He seriously doubted whether driving this thing on the road would result in his being pulled aside for a chat by the traffic department colleagues.
"This is also one of our recent technological accomplishments."
Ge Fu, with spirited eyes, pulled out a tablet and began to introduce from a page of data, "The ’Infected,’ it will become our most important transportation system in the future, equipped with four Infected cannons, each loaded with 240 rounds of ammunition. Once the ammunition is exhausted, there will be a 10-minute cooling period. The Infected cannon is the latest..."
"Can you just summarize it for me?"
Song Lan had to interrupt Ge Fu, admitting his earnestness was mind-blowing, with at least tens of thousands of words densely packed on the tablet, including conceptual designs of the weapons, each accompanied by detailed explanations.
A model of contemporary academic papers indeed.
"... to put it simply, the ’Infected’ is equipped with a weapons system, autonomous navigation system, bulletproof system, and entertainment module. We have also designed a flying mode for it."
"Flight system!?"
Song Lan was shocked. Could this vehicle, which might be stopped by traffic police on the road, actually fly in the sky?
"You can get in and experience it for yourself."
With a skeptical attitude, Song Lan took the driver’s seat, and as he closed the car door, the seatbelt automatically fastened him firmly to the seat.
"Welcome to the Infected, wishing you safe travels."
The car even had an AI voice!
This must be Ge Fu’s mentioned autonomous navigation system, but the voice of the Infected’s system contrasted sharply with the navigation robot Nami; it was deeper and carried a current noise, sounding as though the voice system itself was infected.
The tone hardly seemed like it was wishing passengers a safe journey; in the dead of night, such a voice could absolutely terrify children.
"Activate flight mode."
"Understood. Please confirm your seatbelt is fastened. Flight mode activating."
"Damn it!"
As the Infected took off, Song Lan couldn’t help but exclaim.
He had thought Ge Fu based the design on airplane principles, fitting some sort of flight apparatus, or maybe using a nitrogen propulsion system combined with glider wings. But he was mistaken; what actually made the Infected take to the sky were half-mechanical, half-flesh wings that suddenly sprouted from both sides of the vehicle, causing intense jolting each time they flapped.
Once it reached a certain altitude, the Infected finally entered gliding mode, and its stability gradually improved.
After the five-minute trial mode ended, the vehicle slowly returned to its original position.
"How does it feel?"
Ge Fu was very eager to receive feedback from other users, having spent a long time alone adjusting to maintain the stability of the flight mode.
Medea wasn’t interested in the flight mode, as she, having fused with the Horn Bug gene, didn’t need a vehicle to fly short distances, and she clearly didn’t understand the man’s fervent pursuit of flying vehicles.
"Speaking of performance, it’s quite good."
In all honesty, Song Lan’s user experience was fairly decent.
Taking off was quite a bit bumpier than an armored floating car, but once it entered gliding mode, there wasn’t much difference between the two.
The price of an armored floating car was beyond the reach of a normal family, and strictly speaking, Lu Xiang’s floating car was actually property of the state, currently priced no less than military-grade prosthetics.
However, the Infected model was made by Ge Fu out of discarded parts from a junkyard, costing much less than a floating car.
He now suspected that the bulletproof system Ge Fu mentioned wasn’t the traditional armor system, but rather a product of the fusion between Devourers and mechanical parts.
Conventional weapons and even artillery weren’t much use against Devourers, as they could assimilate even bullets and shells, coupled with those four Infected cannons...
Purely from a combat strength perspective, the Infected model was much stronger than the armored floating cars in their department.
The only issue now was that people generally found it hard to accept a half-mechanical, half-flesh state, and Song Lan could imagine the citizens of the Sixth Nation seeing the Infected model with wings, certainly thinking it was a mutant creature invasion, and before he could get close, the anti-air missiles would be greeting him.
"I have another question."
Song Lan had a bad feeling, "When the Infected model runs on the ground, it won’t sprout some strange parts, right?"
If this vehicle’s land travel mode also grew countless limbs to replace wheels, then obviously it couldn’t be driven on the road, and he didn’t want to be considered an urban legend by the people of the Sixth Nation just because he was driving a car.
"It’s normal when traveling on the ground."
Ge Fu stuck his head in and said, "The Infected model’s main energy mode is a hybrid of oil and electricity, which is another advantage of Devourers—it can utilize the energy from the fusion almost 100%, overall, its usage is similar to normal vehicles, and when the energy runs out, it needs to be replenished in time."
However, the method of refueling is much more convenient and quicker than normal vehicles.
"The Infected model doesn’t need to go to a specific gas station or charging station, it can refuel and recharge on its own."
"It can do that on its own?"
"It can use local resources, borrowing energy from other vehicles, or find the nearest power station to autonomously recharge."
This is the convenience of the fusion of biology and machinery, as the autonomous consciousness of Devourers is definitely much stronger than any artificial intelligence currently on the market, maintaining a state of rapid learning every day.
"Hmm, I think I get it."
Sitting in the driver’s seat, Song Lan had a sudden realization as he stroked his chin, "This is stealing electricity, right?"
"No, it’s borrowing."
Ge Fu emphasized.
"Generally speaking, when you borrow something, you’re supposed to return it, right?"
"It can also be not returned."
