Chapter 203: Chapter 203: Insect Mechanic (Part 1)_1

Ge Fu felt he had hit rock bottom today.

All he had done was to open his shop like usual, turn on the television, and criticize Kolo Film and Television Media’s show-off maneuvers. Having advertised himself everywhere as a three-star rescuer, Su Li, a man whose pretense of being good couldn’t possibly be faker, had gotten his shop door blocked by the cops.

He was certain he had gotten himself into serious trouble this time because the person who came knocking was none other than Director Lu Xiang, the head of the Law Enforcement department commanding respect in District Seventeen recently.

As soon as he saw the visitor enter, he instinctively raised his hands, not daring to make a single move.

"You are Ge Fu?"

After sizing up the man with a suspicious gaze, Lu Xiang asked.

The man before him bore little resemblance to the image on the photograph: a tank top paired with wrinkled shorts, flip-flops on his feet, and his hair growing thin to the point where male pattern baldness was beginning to show.

In the photo, Ge Fu was clearly just over twenty years old, at the prime of his life, pictured during his time as an employee, dressed in a suit and exuding vigor.

Lu Xiang couldn’t help but wonder what had happened during his stay in District Seventeen to age Ge Fu by more than twenty years so abruptly.

With his current appearance, no one would doubt him if he said he was a forty-year-old divorced man with two kids.

"Director Lu, what have I done?"

Ge Fu shrank into a corner, asking the very question every suspect would in the face of arrest. From her years of experience, those who asked such a question when sought by Law Enforcers were almost certainly guilty.

Looking around, Lu Xiang gathered some basic information—the store was managed solely by Ge Fu, and business was so poor that the bored shopkeeper spent time idly watching television at the shop’s entrance.

The television was airing a promotional event by Kolo Film and Television Media, who had been tirelessly working on crafting a shining image for Su Li.

Lu Xiang didn’t oppose this, though the showmanship was clearly excessive, as Su Li had indeed objectively countered the local criminal gangs. With his three-star rescuer status, dealing with some local gangsters was naturally an easy task.

Thanks to the intense media bombardment, Su Li had also managed to accumulate some reputation in District Seventeen lately.

"Close up the shop, and come with me."

Hearing Lu Xiang say this, Ge Fu turned pale.

His mind immediately raced back to his past actions in the company. If it hadn’t been for a righteous head of the local Law Enforcers who let him finish his statement and flee overnight, by now he might have fallen into the hands of powerful families to be skinned and de-boned.

But what was bound to come, finally came—Law Enforcers of District Seventeen had finally made their move against him, a lonely and helpless young man.

"Director Lu, I know you’re a good person, and you really don’t have to do this," Ge Fu said, his bottom seemingly sprouting roots and growing on the stool, unwilling to budge an inch.

After seeing the "Law Enforcement Handbook" some time ago, he had actually developed a rather favorable view of the Law Enforcement department of District Seventeen. "If those powerful families have been pressuring you, I can leave District Seventeen. Just give me a day, no, half a day to prepare and that would be enough."

"Your savings, they’re nearly gone, aren’t they?"

This painfully incisive question immediately left Ge Fu speechless.

Lu Xiang continued, "The layer of dust on your workshop indicates it’s been a while since you’ve had any business. I’ve checked the records; buying this shopfront almost exhausted all your savings."

Indeed, Ge Fu was a talented individual.

Unfortunately, his talents were not suited for such a place. The citizens of District Seventeen weren’t likely to visit his humble shop for weapons design, and bicycle repair or exoskeleton armors were even more dismal prospects.

Apart from Song Lan, she hadn’t seen anyone these days who liked cycling around everywhere.

"Even if you bought a ticket and left District Seventeen, survival in the ’outside world’ would be very difficult. So, come with me."

Ge Fu clenched his teeth and, with a hardening of his heart, stood up.

He felt that Lu Xiang’s tone didn’t seem to suggest he wanted to hand him over for the big family to handle.

Since he’d left the corporation, his life had hit rock bottom, and it probably couldn’t get any worse.

With that belief, he followed along.

However, a quarter of an hour later, Ge Fu regretted it because their destination wasn’t the Law Enforcers department but a secluded alley. Even with daylight, the alley had an air of desolation and decay. The homeless squatting at the entrance of the alley scattered elsewhere after seeing Lu Xiang’s hover car pull up at the curb.

The deeper into the alley they went, the more Ge Fu felt it was the perfect place for murder and dumping bodies.

If Lu Xiang truly were to chop him up there, it was unlikely anyone would discover his body.

But it was too late to run now, and it would only alarm Lu Xiang—beforehand, he had seen a video on the computer. An enforcer from the Chai Ke Group was causing trouble on the street when Lu Xiang leaped from his hover car and with one elbow smash drove the man’s head into the cement.

Clearly, this Director of Law Enforcers was no ordinary person.

At this close range, he feared any rash movement might lead to his neck being snapped immediately.

In a haunting silence, they entered a room resembling a basement, one after the other, and as soon as they set foot in the room, a dozen pairs of eyes focused on them simultaneously.

"Damn—!"

Ge Fu’s cry of alarm echoed in the compartment for a long time because he was far too familiar with the creatures inhabiting the room.

Horn Bugs!

After his store had gathered dust, a number of these bugs had thrived, and during his attempts to exterminate them, he had suffered a painful cost.

These bugs were natural assassins, with explosive strength and pincers like sharp knives.

The wounds from their slashes had taken a full week to heal!

He had locked the Horn Bugs in the garage, never daring to set foot inside again, but later, something happened, and the Horn Bugs in his store just disappeared on their own.

At this moment, he guessed Lu Xiang’s plan.

The other must intend to kill him here and then have the Horn Bugs destroy the evidence by consuming his body!

The web said that Horn Bugs were carnivorous mutant insects that exhibited social behavior and were highly aggressive; hence, if signs of Horn Bugs appeared at home, one should never try to exterminate them on their own, but should contact a professional pest control service for onsite pest prevention work.

"Director Lu, I don’t think this is necessary..."

Ge Fu carefully retreated to the door, ready to flee desperately.

"Three days,"

Lu Xiang turned around and said calmly, "You have three days to design a set of equipment that can work in coordination with them. If you can design it, we will hire you as a technical consultant for the Law Enforcement department."

"What?"

Ge Fu doubted if he was hallucinating, "You mean to design equipment for these bugs?"

"Yes."

"Won’t they bite people?"

"They will."

Lu Xiang continued, "During these three days, they will protect your safety. If someone threatens your personal safety, they will attack."
