Chapter 183: Chapter 183: Depending on Friends when Out and About_1
Following their discussion with the bar owner, the two had obtained two essential pieces of information.
First, Deputy Captain Eric had been investigating a man with a cross-shaped scar at the back of his neck before his disappearance. According to the bar owner, this man was the leader of the Marauders who had attacked Sharp Cage Town years ago. The second piece of information was that Eric, after getting drunk that day, did not stay in Sharp Cage Town but directly drove into the desert.
The last location of the hovercar was in Sharp Cage Town, implying that Eric had manually turned off the hovercar’s positioning system before heading to the desert.
These details were suspicious and could potentially explain Eric’s disappearance.
The bar owner seemed to treat them like Eric’s colleagues, revealing everything he could recall. At that moment, he was just an old man fraught with anxiety over his foster son’s disappearance.
Lu Xiang sighed quietly, understanding the bar owner’s current state of mind. He was merely an ordinary townsman who had spent most of his life living in Sharp Cage Town.
However...
"Did you ever consider one thing?"
She began speaking, "If we were subordinates sent by the one you were describing to cover up everything, you would have been dead by now. Not only you, but everyone else in Sharp Cage Town would probably be implicated."
This time, they were lucky enough.
If the other party had arrived before them, they would have been greeted by a slew of dead bodies, and all clues about Eric would have stopped here.
The bar owner paused, his gaze filled with fear as he looked at them.
"Don’t panic, I just want to tell you something. Whatever someone says when they come here after us, do not talk about these things to them."
Most of the content within the bar owner’s story would be enough to attract disastrous consequences for him.
"What about Eric?"
"We’ll do our best to find him."
"Thank you, thank you!"
..................
After leaving the bar, Lu Xiang felt heavy-hearted.
It was not just because of what had happened to Eric but also because she had made an almost impossible promise to the bar owner.
Looking at the teary-eyed owner seeing them off at the door, her heart ached even more.
Deputy Captain Eric’s fate was sealed. Even if they found the place where the accident happened, they probably wouldn’t be able to bring him back to Sharp Cage Town alive.
He deliberately cut off the hovercar’s locator before leaving Sharp Cage Town and disappeared in the desert area for nearly a week. Even if he left any clues, they would have been buried by the sand by now. It was like finding a needle in a haystack.
The only solution Lu Xiang could think of was the exact opposite, locating the target of Eric’s investigation before he disappeared by using the characteristic cross-shaped scar, and then ask him about Eric’s whereabouts.
"The manipulated surveillance footage is likely related to the man with the cross-shaped scar. Eric must have found something in the footage for him to be silenced. But if the person in the footage held such importance, he would surely have made a backup."
If they could find Eric’s privately backed-up footage, they would know exactly what had happened on the day the leader of the Twelfth Nation disappeared.
"Since we are already here, let’s find Eric first. Something this important may have been carried on him directly."
Song Lan, however, offered an alternative opinion.
"Find Eric?"
Lu Xiang blinked, wondering if she had heard it wrong.
"If it was a convoy, it would probably be difficult to find. Thankfully the hovercar he was riding is quite rare in the desert area. If we ask around the locals a bit, we might be able to locate the incident site."
Asking the locals was indeed a common method of investigation.
But the locals in the desert area...
A sudden thought struck Lu Xiang. Looking at Song Lan, her eyes widened in astonishment, unable to comprehend how his thought process could result in such a bold idea.
Within fifteen minutes, her guess was confirmed by a Death God Crab that poked its head out of the sand.
She had to admit that Song Lan’s utilization of the mutated creatures had reached a level beyond her comprehension. Not only did he rally them for combat, but now he was even engaging them to investigate a missing person.
After witnessing the difficult-to-understand interaction between Song Lan and the Death God Crab, it emerged halfway from the sand.
"Great, it said it saw the hovercar of Deputy Captain Eric and can lead us there. The small mutated creatures in the desert area are indeed very hospitable."
While speaking, Song Lan had already climbed onto the Death God Crab, followed by Lu Xiang, who sat on the crab’s shell, hugging her knees.
She had heard numerous descriptions of the Death God Crab but had never thought that "hospitable" would be one of them.
The feel was about the same as sitting on a hard bed. And possibly because it had just emerged from the sand, it felt a little hot to sit on.
However, with it willingly providing free transportation, she didn’t have the nerve to suggest improving the temperature of its shell.
Something free could not demand too much.
"How’d you come up with the idea to ask them for help?"
"Haven’t you heard the old saying? When you’re out and about, you rely on friends. We’re all mates; when running into trouble, we should help each other."
"But how do you plan to help them?"
"I gave them my home address and contact details. Told them to come looking for me whenever they run into trouble, and I’d help in whatever way I can."
"You..."
Lu Xiang was left speechless.
Given the Death God Crabs’ size, if one really came to the Seventeenth District to find Song Lan, it would essentially be a mutant creature invasion, which could scare many citizens into fainting along the way.
Seemingly understanding Lu Xiang’s concern, Song Lan consoled her, "Don’t worry, we have a special way of communicating, similar to radio communication codes. They can contact me through our method before arriving, and I can go to meet them."
He believed there hadn’t been many who had researched Death God Crabs before him. The fact was these mutated creatures had varying degrees of Spiritual Energy too.
Spiritual Energy could not only be used for fighting but also functioned like a telephone.
During their conversation, the Death God Crab had brought them to the scene of the incident. As far as their eyes could see, it was an endless desert. After deviating off track, they had no idea where they were. It would have been almost impossible to find Eric and his hovercar without the help of the local "enthusiastic residents".
Both the person and the car had been swallowed by the desert wind and sand.
Song Lan communicated with the Death God Crab in a way that Lu Xiang couldn’t comprehend for a moment. It then leaned over to let them off and disappeared underground.
About a minute later, a burnt hovercar wreckage and a highly dehydrated corpse were pulled out from the ground by the Death God Crab.
The clothes on the body were just ragged shreds, and many of the bones were broken. There was no way to recognize what he originally looked like.
"The injuries were caused by a Gatling gun."
Lu Xiang examined the body and quickly reached a conclusion.
The most severe injuries were on the chest. From the angle of penetration, the bullets were fired from a position diagonally above Eric’s head.
The scene of that night began to form in her mind.
That night, for some reason, Eric brought the hovercar down here. He got out of the car and stood not far from it.
Before long, an armed helicopter with a Gatling gun appeared. Before Eric could take any evasive actions, the machine gun turned him into a sieve.
Before leaving, they destroyed the hovercar with anti-material weaponry.
"The question is, who lured Eric here?"
