Chapter 179: Chapter 179: Missing Persons_1
Actually, this was the question Song Lan had always wanted to ask.
How could a person completely vanish in a city with such advanced science and technology?
Even if the Rebel Army didn’t encounter them on the day they took over the capital city, they should have been able to roughly guess the former leader’s movements through the city’s surveillance systems, right?
Knowing the true intentions of the Rebel Army, shouldn’t Lieyang try to bring her father back for "deworming surgery" at the first chance?
"We’re already looking for him."
Upon mentioning this issue, Lieyang’s expression fell, "The ministers are also clueless about my father’s whereabouts. We’ve also investigated all of the day’s surveillance records and found nothing. I wanted to keep looking, but the ministers insisted that they would help and told me that I should focus on other matters. They’ve even mobilized the Rebel Army for the search, but they haven’t found any clues yet."
Isn’t this quite a predicament?
Song Lan felt gloomy.
In a city as technologically advanced as this one, silently disappearing is impossible.
Unless someone deliberately wiped away all traces of the former leader’s departure, only cooperation between the two parties could possibly allow a prominent figure to completely disappear.
So much time has passed since the capital was seized, Lieyang’s father might have already reached his destination.
The first thing Song Lan thought about was the United Government, controlling the former leader of the Twelfth Nation with mechanical parasites, and smuggling him back to The First Region could bring them numerous benefits.
Firstly, they could resurrect him as the ruler when they reclaim control over the Twelfth Nation, claiming "The legitimate government of the Twelfth Nation is in the hands of the United Government."
Secondly, they could use this as leverage to threaten Lieyang.
Lieyang’s conceptual weapon is a vital asset of the United Government, although their plan to transport her back to The First Region failed, they may not give up easily, seducing Lieyang into a trap using her father as bait.
If the Rebel Army’s hackers could bring down Lieyang’s operating system for fifteen minutes, the system’s developers surely could as well.
Her combat skills would be of little use against the United Government.
This brings us to the oft-discussed issue. While conceptual weapons greatly enhance Lieyang’s spiritual energy, it also gives her a fatal weakness.
"Right now, the worst-case scenario is that your father is under the control of the United Government."
However, this time, it seems like those who were tasked with transporting Lieyang’s father were smarter. They didn’t stay in the seventeenth region too long, and may have directly taken a plane to The First Region.
But that’s weird.
The Rebel Army’s undercover agent managed to intercept and delay Lieyang for a day in the seventeenth region, why couldn’t they intercept the leader of the Twelfth Nation?
"But don’t rush, there’s not yet a definite conclusion."
Song Lan quickly added, to prevent Lieyang from flying on a plane right to The First Region in a fit of anger.
In fact, after he finished speaking, Lieyang already rolled up her sleeves.
"No matter where your father has gone, it is clear that someone within your ranks has erased his traces. This is probably why you haven’t been able to find any clues so far. Our first order of business is to find those responsible and ascertain your father’s true whereabouts."
"But how do we find the person responsible?"
"That’s our speciality."
Song Lan said, "Our supervisor, Lu Xiang, is a veteran law enforcer who has a wealth of criminal investigative experience. Disappearance cases are one of her areas of expertise."
Since Lu Xiang labelled herself as the "idea queen", he has to acknowledge her genius in equal measure.
"Lu Xiang, can you find the person?"
Lieyang’s formality towards Lu Xiang had shifted because Lu Xiang said that the seventeenth region was always her home. So, rounding it up, Lu Xiang could be considered part of her family too.
"I’ll try my best. But I might need to liaise with your local law enforcers."
"No problem."
"By the way, we need to investigate this covertly. Don’t let anyone know about this, especially the ministers around you."
Song Lan reminded, worried that the clueless Lieyang would let the cat out of the bag once she returned.
After this, Lieyang didn’t stick around. She bid her goodbyes and left.
After Lieyang left, Lu Xiang fixed her gaze on Song Lan.
She didn’t see this coming.
Going on this leisure trip, she ended up investigating a case once again. Moreover, in this case, the missing person was the former leader of the Twelfth Nation, which if pursued, could possibly implicate some high-ranking officials.
"I find that your cases are always big even though you present yourself as lazy most of the time."
"Isn’t it because Lieyang is our biggest investor at the moment?"
A person can be lazy, but they should never lose their conscience.
If you take someone’s money, you must provide them with exceptional service.
"What if, after investigating, it turns out that the former leader really is in The First Region? How will you explain it to Lieyang?"
"Then I have to tell her the truth."
"Then all the effort you put in earlier will be wasted."
"There’s no such thing as a useless experience," said Song Lan, "Besides, it’s not confirmed that the person who took him away is the United Government, I feel like there’s something fishy about it."
If the United Government was really as meticulous as that, then they wouldn’t have had such a hectic time recently.
Come to think of it, this is the United Government we’re talking about, the same government who messed up the transportation of Rebel Army leaders and the retrieval of valuable research!
Truth be told, Song Lan felt that he only played a minor role in these matters.
The main reason these events took place was due to the incompetence of the United Government’s security division, such higher-level transportations had their plans leaked in advance and allocated unreliable transporters.
But does this really prove that the United Government is ignorant to this extent?
He didn’t think so.
It is more likely there was a problem within the United Government. It’s possible someone was deliberately going against the Review Council.
"From this standpoint, not only us and the Rebel Army hope that Lieyang doesn’t fall into the hand of the United Government, it’s possible people within the United Government think so too."
Song Lan said, "But these aren’t the things that we should be worried about. Our duty is limited to investigating the whereabouts of the missing person."
"Let’s start investigating from the law enforcement side."
Lu Xiang said, "If anyone deliberately deleted the surveillance footage that day, they would have left some clues behind."
"Don’t forget about the informants."
Song Lan reminded, "They are the best sources of information in a city."
