Chapter 173: Chapter 173: You Lost Due to Insufficient Troops_1

In fact, the two sides didn’t engage in a firefight upon meeting.

The main reason was the disparity in numbers. On Lu Xiang’s side, there were only four people, three of whom were weaklings who had barely held guns before, let alone hit a fixed target.

This trip also revealed Song Lan’s weaknesses to Lu Xiang - she couldn’t drive or shoot.

As a Law Enforcer, these are essential skills. Lu Xiang planned to personally instruct Song Lan once they returned to District 17.

Considering that the truck Lyu Feng was driving was parked nearby, Lu Xiang didn’t open fire voluntarily to avoid it getting blown up by a missile. She merely stood next to the bonfire, gun in hand, waiting for the regular troops of the Barrosa Group to surround them.

"Report to the commander, there are no ambushes around."

It wasn’t long before the intelligence team had swept the area and reported back.

The resting spot chosen by the four of them was desolate, with nowhere around that could be considered a cover. They focused on inspecting the truck and found that it only contained electronic equipment, nothing that could be classified as a weapon.

The armored floating car slowly descended, and the commander jumped off from the side door.

"Lu Xiang."

The target of the operation was less than five meters away from him at this moment, holding a standard Cavalry assault rifle in her hands, which could only be described as crude compared to the regular army’s equipment.

The squad gathered here was assembled in anticipation of a possible war with the entire District 17.

"I’m curious, why didn’t you return to District 17?"

"Because there are some things I still need to confirm."

Lu Xiang replied.

Lately, the border trade line wasn’t peaceful.

The main reason was related to the Barrosa Group.

The weapons license was secondary. The more important reason was that in order to promote their weapons, they were always stirring up trouble in secret. Especially after Chai Ke’s death, they provided weapons to different criminal groups on the trade line, pushing them to provoke conflicts.

CTEA-32.

This was their main product recently pushed to the market.

A gene-altering drug that, when injected, could produce a biological weapon capable of single-handedly wiping out a squad of elite mercenaries.

Since last month, there had been seven attacks in the middle of the trade line. The caravans under attack were wiped out but the attackers did not loot any wealth. Instead, they completely destroyed everything at the scene.

Afterwards, the footage of the attack circulated wildly on the black market.

The biologic armor that bullets couldn’t pierce through, and the destructive force that a single whip could flip an armored car, sparked an arms race among various criminal groups. It seemed as if whoever could get more CTEA-32, could become the next ruler of the trade line.

The reason that Lu Xiang knew all of this was because of an anonymous email. It was this email that inspired her to plan a business trip.

If they were to regain control of the trade line in the future, they must first understand the dangers faced by the merchants.

"Unfortunately, it seems your journey has to come to an end here."

The commander said, feeling that handing over the chief of District 17’s Law Enforcers to the Big Boss would make him happier than simply killing Lu Xiang outright, "Get in. I’ll give you a ride."

"What about the others?"

"Execute them on the spot."

The two of them didn’t avoid discussing this right in front of the four of them, deciding the fate of the others.

This made Song Lan somewhat unable to bear it.

The very same criminal group that disrupted their journey now was intending to forcibly separate him from Lu Xiang.

As early as 2020, he had heard about the disadvantages of long-distance relationships.

"Hey, hey, dear Commander, we are finally enjoying a vacation. Don’t you understand the importance of respecting others?"

The commander didn’t respond, but aimed his gun at Song Lan’s head.

Facing the ominous muzzle of the gun, the poor, weak, and helpless Song Lan had no choice but to raise his hands above his head, "Don’t get excited. I’m just trying to do what’s best for you. If you keep this up, sooner or later someone won’t stand for it."

This scene elicited a round of laughter from the Cavalry.

They have met many people, but this was the first time they encountered someone attempting to reason with people in this barren wasteland.

Someone in the crowd began to heckle, "Where are those who can’t bear to watch anymore, I don’t see anything?"

"That’s all I have to say."

Song Lan said, "Although I am usually good-tempered, my buddies have had enough."

Before the echo of his words left, a metallic slicing sound rang out from the crowd.

A mist of blood spread instantaneously across the desert; the armored vehicle’s equipment hadn’t even had a chance to function before it was sucked into the quicksand.

An unprecedented vibration came from beneath their feet. A massive creature sprang from the ground, casting a shadow that eclipsed the moonlight. Just one clash left the cavalry with heavy casualties.

"Death God Crabs, it’s a swarm of Death God Crabs!"

Shouts of panic rose from the flustered crowd; bullets were simply ineffective against these colossal creatures.

"Quick, we need cover from the helicopters!"

Gunshots rang out, and blood spurted from the driver’s seat. Several helicopters, like kites with their strings cut, smashed towards the ground, but they were intercepted by ground-based behemoths before they hit. Crushed under tremendous pressure, the war machinery was reduced to piles of scrap metal.

These Death God Crabs were much larger than they had ever imagined, and amidst the pandemonium, they spotted some never-before-seen worm-like mutant creatures.

The acid that had just penetrated the bulletproof glass of the helicopter was spat out from the mouths of these worm-like mutants.

Gargantuan bodies emerged one after another from the sand, inadvertently surrounding the formal army of the Barrosa Group.

The cavalry commander near the bonfire witnessed an even more horrifying sight - these mutant creatures seemed to be deliberately avoiding the four individuals near the bonfire, as if they were being controlled by someone among them.

Could it be...

A power to control mutant creatures?

The one-sided battle lasted only a few minutes. The sound of gunfire and wailing quickly disappeared, and all was silent again.

Bodies and weapons debris were dragged underground by the massive creatures, leaving behind uneven holes and the lingering stench of blood.

"Your failure was due to a severe lack of forces."

Song Lan gazed out at the boundless desert.

Anyone privy to what was hidden beneath the sands would know that to annihilate these mutant creatures, they’d need at least a thousand-man army equipped with advanced weaponry.

Also, prior to the battle, they’d need to carpet bomb the area.

Otherwise, the outcome would be the same as that of the current cavalry commander, stripped of his troops the moment the battle began.

Even donning an exoskeleton armor, the commander didn’t have the courage to raise his gun.

Because he had personally witnessed how his exoskeleton-clad guards were effortlessly decimated by the Death God Crabs.

Suddenly remembering something, he ejected himself from his exoskeleton.

The commander lunged towards Lu Xiang, the serum given by Scarecrow clutched firmly in his hand.

Two gunshots echoed.

The commander’s hand, holding the serum, fell limp. He landed face-first into the sand.

Lu Xiang had experienced a similar situation before.

Using her prior experience, she reacted immediately.

She bent down, picked up the syringe that fell from the commander’s hands. Presumably, this was the CTEA-32 mentioned in the anonymous email.

The commander lay prone on the ground, glaring at Song Lan.

It was obvious that the creature attack was not orchestrated by Lu Xiang.

His features hidden by a duckbill cap, sunglasses, and a mask, this was a strange man who wore sunglasses even at night.

"Who... exactly are you?"

"Just a passing biologist."
