Chapter 168: Chapter 168: Safe Travel, Avoid planting Flags_1
One significant benefit of travelling as representatives of a large corporation and a trading convoy is that they don’t have to squeeze into a vehicle with mercenaries.
The employer’s off-road vehicles and transport trucks were safely tucked away in the middle of the convoy. Song Lan and Lu Xiang sat in the rear row, enjoying the air conditioning inside their car.
The convoy’s boss, Lyu Feng, was a very talkative man who showed a keen interest in their positions as investigators from the Tesla Tech Biological Department, and he chatted incessantly from the start of the journey.
"I’m specialized in the electronics business, and I’ve been planning to explore the market for bionic humans recently,"
said Lyu Feng. "Perhaps we can become business partners in the future."
"We are from the technical department. We don’t handle sales,"
Lu Xiang promptly responded, in order to prevent Lyu Feng from leading the conversation towards the price and sales of bionic humans.
She wasn’t too bullish about the bionic human market because, in Sector 17, bionic humans rarely appear in people’s everyday lives. They can only be seen in entertainment venues in bustling areas and large-scale mass production corporations.
For middle and lower-income families, owning a household bionic human is somewhat extravagant.
Lyu Feng chuckled and said, "The most profitable merchandise currently is weaponry, followed by electronics."
Although as the center of neutral country trade, the Twelfth Nation can buy almost anything, most commodities are transported there by people like them. Combined with the recent instability in trade routes, the price of electronic products has almost tripled.
The United Government has strictly controlled the technology of electronic devices - their core technology is never exposed. This means that the Neutral Country could only import electronic devices, and since the Foster Family withdrew from Sector 17, there has been an excess demand for electronic products in the Twelfth Nation. The traders are making a profit from this situation.
"After this job, I will be able to live comfortably in the big cities of the Twelfth Nation for a while."
Upon hearing this, Song Lan’s heart tightened.
Buddy, could you speak less? The guy who made grandiose claims last time was nearly burned alive by Princess Lieyang, and their boss is now in jail, sent there by the Law Enforcers of Sector 17.
Regrettably, Lyu Feng was oblivious to this and continued, "You can rest assured. The people I hired are from a locally renowned mercenary organization. They are all pros, so safety will not be a problem."
Looking through the car window at the mercenaries on the military jeeps diligently protecting them, Song Lan couldn’t shake off a bad feeling.
They probably haven’t realized they’ve got a flag-planting enthusiast as an employer.
"Have you ever dabbled in the arms business?"
Lu Xiang followed Lyu Feng’s train of thought and asked. She wasn’t interested in electronic goods. Weapons were the high-demand products between Sector 17 and the Twelfth Nation. It seems that every now and then, a large number of weapons from outside flowed into the black market of Sector 17.
During a previous interrogation, "Hyena" confessed to them that if the price was right, even tanks and missiles could be obtained.
"One shouldn’t mess with the arms business."
Hearing this topic, even Lyu Feng, who was fond of making grand proclamations, appeared scared. "I know Tesla Tech also has a military department, but on this trade route, you need a license to do arms business."
"A license?"
"Only with the consent of the Barrosa Group, can an arms business be conducted. We call that an Arms License."
Lyu Feng lowered his voice, "Those who transport arms without the Group’s consent die miserably. Usually, as soon as the goods arrive at the station, the Barrosa Group gets word of it."
Of course, Lu Xiang was not unfamiliar with this name.
The arms that "Mouse" had previously purchased at high prices were the property of the Barrosa Group. The leader of the Group was a highly wanted criminal in different countries, with a bounty with up to eight digits. He was also a person of special interest in the Special Operations Department abroad, second only to the leaders of the Rebel Army in terms of danger level.
The person himself moves in mysterious ways, barely making a public appearance.
"Take my advice; if you want to do business on this route, by all means avoid crossing the Barrosa Group."
"Thank you for the warning,"
Lu Xiang silently noted the Barrosa Group. From Lyu Feng’s terrified demeanor, it wasn’t hard to figure out that the Barrosa Group was the largest looming shadow over this route.
If the government of Sector 17 wants to control this trade route, they are bound to deal with this influential arms dealer.
Suddenly, there was a commotion at the front of the convoy.
In less than thirty seconds, the entire convoy stopped. The leader of the mercenaries got out and came over to their car, saying, "It’s the Cavalry of the Barrosa Group."
See how you’ve planted your flag!
Song Lan saw the convoy coming towards them. There were four military jeeps in total, and the fully armed men inside were evidently of higher rank compared to their own mercenaries.
A black flag fluttered in the wind on the leading military jeep, bearing the crest of a wreath and firearms.
Recognizing the Cavalry of the Barrosa Group, the mercenaries did not resist and allowed the convoy to approach.
"Don’t be nervous."
Lyu Feng, who seemed more nervous than anyone else, reassured them, "It should just be a routine check. As long as they confirm that we’re not in arms business, they will let us go."
Song Lan felt that if Lyu Feng’s legs hadn’t been shaking while speaking, it might have been more convincing.
"I’ll go first; you two wait in the car."
It took Lyu Feng a while to recover before he could open the door and step out.
The leader of the Cavalry had gotten out of his vehicle and swaggered over to Lyu Feng.
They exchanged a few words, and the leader made a hand signal towards his convoy. A group of people quickly came out of their vehicles. They surrounded the truck, and one of them ordered Lyu Feng to open the trunk, and walked into the cargo hold.
About a few minutes later, the Cavalry descended from the truck, gestured a distant "ok" sign at the leader.
"It’s fine, my friend."
The leader’s expression softened. He patted Lyu Feng on the shoulder - his strength almost making a weak-kneed Lyu Feng fall over - "More and more people want to do business without licenses these days. We’re just conducting a routine check."
"I have always been a legitimate businessman."
Lyu Feng took out a bulging envelope from the inside pocket of his clothes and carefully handed it to the leader.
The leader opened the envelope in front of him, counted the money inside, and without any change of expression, put the envelope in his pocket.
Just moments ago, Song Lan and Lu Xiang witnessed a pay-for-passage crime unfold right in front of them.
To prevent Lu Xiang’s occupational habit from re-occurring, Song Lan gently placed his hand on hers.
When Lyu Feng alighted, he activated his ability.
In that limited future, he did not foresee Lyu Feng dying in a pool of blood.
Lu Xiang reciprocated by interlocking fingers with him, showing her intention through action.
The leader raised his hand, gesturing for them to carry on.
However, before Lyu Feng could breathe a sigh of relief, the leader’s raising hand froze midway. He glanced at their car from afar, suddenly quickening his pace towards them.
