Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Hidden in the Network_1
Song Lan and the technical director of the biology department followed one another up the stairs.
After the elevator powered down, the journey to the CEO’s office located at the top floor from the exhibition hall was a rather long one, forcing Song Lan to stop several times to allow the nearly exhausted director to rest momentarily.
However, he didn’t overly criticize the other person.
After all, technical personnel who write code rarely get the opportunity for physical activities. Prolonged lack of exercise led to a weak constitution, and with a stab wound in the hip as well, being able to climb more than 80 floors could be considered performing above expectations.
Song Lan simply, and sincerely, suggested that the director should consider running or cycling to keep fit during his free time.
Even though they hadn’t encountered any bionic persons ambushing them along the way, by the time they reached the top floor, the director still looked almost dead, his vision blurred and his right hand leaning against the wall as he gasped for air at the doorway.
After catching his breath for a while, he realized that the atmosphere in the corridor seemed a bit off.
The "concerned citizen" who had been walking in front of him didn’t make a sound, nor did he continue to move forward.
When the director shone his flashlight ahead, he was suddenly confronted with a corridor full of "people"; the closest being Python Girl, who bared her teeth menacingly at the two of them.
Due to the noise he had just made, all the bionic persons in the corridor had their gaze fixed on him, including the domestic models from the biology department as well as the combat and military models from the military department.
Without making a sound, the bionic persons conveyed a message with their eyes,
"You’re finally here; we’ve been waiting for you for ages."
The director’s mind went blank. Under the shock of the sudden confrontation, his eyes rolled back, and he fell to the floor.
However, the next second, he let out a weird cry and bounced up from the floor.
He had intended to just faint and leave the stage entirely to the "concerned citizen," but his butt hit the ground first, jolting him fully awake with pain.
"This must be the CEO using the emergency power to activate the office’s security system; they’re locked out and can’t get in."
Still wincing with pain, the director began to explain the current situation to Song Lan.
This was Tesla Technology’s highest level of security system designed to protect VIPs. Until the Governor himself lifted the restriction, even explosives would hardly damage the walls.
With the aid of the lighting equipment, the director noticed large burn marks and cutting traces on the sealed wall.
"Those, those are military-grade bionic persons... there are 7 of them!"
This was the first time the director felt fear towards the products his company manufactured. Although the military division was not under the same department as his own, some sample data about the products were circulated.
Therefore, he knew very well that these military-grade bionic persons were no different from killing machines disguised in human skin.
Impervious to pain, incapable of negative emotions—if they locked onto a target, they would fulfill their mission, even if it meant mutual destruction. To the United Government, they were the most trustworthy allies; to enemies, they were the most horrifying nightmare.
And at this moment, they were standing on opposing sides with these killing machines.
They were going to be killed!
The director’s tension reached the point of nausea, covering his mouth. Even for the "concerned citizen," facing off against 7 killing machines at once was likely an unattainable fantasy.
In such a confined space, there was nowhere to take cover, and he didn’t even know where to start warning the other—because these killing machines were equipped with dozens of weapons designed to kill the target in a confined space with a single strike.
"It seems you didn’t come over by yourself."
Song Lan ignored the director’s blathering. From the start, he hadn’t expected this guy to be useful on the front lines.
As long as the other didn’t end up like those teammates in movies who, inexplicably and to the audience’s bewilderment, ended up gifting their heads, Song Lan would be satisfied.
The Chief Executor’s office was on the last level, and Spiritual Energy had already permeated every corner of this building, except for them and the bionic people, only Gao Yuan, who was hiding in the safe room, remained.
"We have a saying in our line of work,"
The Python Girl closest to them flicked her forked tongue and gave a serpent-like smile indistinguishable from that of a real person, "When a hacker is found, death isn’t far behind. Please forgive the manner of our meeting."
"It seems we are of the same kind."
Song Lan sensed something odd about the situation; these bionic people were gathering like idle machines at the door to the Chief Executor’s office, as though they were deliberately waiting for his arrival.
"We are not your enemies, at least not yet."
As she spoke, her amber snake eyes skipped over Song Lan, landing on the trembling Director, "It seems you’ve got a problem following you, do you need me to take care of it?"
It didn’t seem like a question, because before the words had fully fallen, those few military bionic people had already begun their action.
"Ah—!"
The Director must have realized what fate was about to befall him and, with a yelp that pierced the night, let out what he knew could very likely be his last sound in this world.
In the silence that followed, the echo of his scream lingered long after. The Director then dropped to his knees, hands over his head as if trying to boost his defenses.
Time ticked away, second by second, until the echo of the scream had long faded. Only then did the Director tentatively move one hand away slightly, a gesture that made him truly feel alive.
Not turned into a pulp by those seven killing machines in an instant.
He cautiously squinted open his eyes.
The familiar figure of the "Good Samaritan" stood before him, just like before, shielding him. From this angle, it seemed as if the other party had done nothing, yet it was as if time had frozen at that second.
The military bionic robots still held their poised positions.
The next moment, all the bionic people in the corridor seemed to lose their power supply simultaneously and collapsed powerlessly to the ground.
There were no signs of Destruction on the bionic people; they looked exactly like they had when they were on display.
Just now,
What exactly had happened?
The Director felt his brain was overloaded.
It would have been much easier to accept if the "Good Samaritan" had suddenly unleashed some dizzying move.
However, it seemed that the other party had merely glared at these bionic people, and suddenly, they had all crashed.
This was completely inexplicable with any knowledge he had!
"What... what kind of move is this?"
The Director looked up, his face filled with disbelief.
It seemed that the "Good Samaritan" had heard his question, turned his face toward him, and what came into view was still that ever-present smiling masquerade mask from the parties.
Then the "Good Samaritan" spoke.
His voice was succinct and powerful.
——"None of your damn business."
