Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Princess of a Fallen Kingdom_1
Work stress in the department was considerable.
The first issue of "Law Enforcement Handbook" had elicited a monumental response citywide, with even departments from neighboring cities securing some sample copies, which they brought back to their respective cities for detailed study.
The reputation of law enforcement was on a significant rise, thus we could not afford any mishaps at this crucial time.
"Chief, if we ditch the second issue of the Law Enforcement Handbook, the situation could take a serious turn," warned Zhuang Chi who was career-oriented, to the others present. "As far as I’m aware, the citizens of District 17 are not fond of dropped promises."
"Don’t worry so much. Aren’t we already working on a solution?"
After meeting with the CEO of Tesla Tech yesterday, he realized that the man was not an ideal interview candidate.
Firstly, the reputation of big corporations among the citizens of District 17 is notably under hate. The consistently high unemployment rate has led to major social conflict and disdain, particularly towards large corporations such as Tesla Tech which they feel to be distant and inaccessible, and are logically being imagined as unscrupulous capitalists plotting some conspiracy.
Recently, we’ve received several anonymous tip-off letters asking us to thoroughly investigate Tesla Tech.
If at under such circumstances, we were to post an exclusive interview with Tesla Tech, the citizens of District 17 will see it as an attempt to whitewash the corporation. Not only will it fail to resolve any issues, but we may also be labeled as enemies of the people.
Song Lan, with her vast experience countering online trolls, would never let the law enforcement department be engulfed in a media storm.
"We follow a populist policy. The content we publish must align with our fellow citizens."
Song Lan shared the foundational pillars and objectives of the Law Enforcement Handbook that were decided at its inception.
Having set the theory, it was now time to address practical issues.
Each edition of the "Law Enforcement Handbook" needs a theme. For the last issue, the theme was the highly intriguing "Hot-Hearted Citizens", which attracted countless eyes but inevitably also placed the second edition in a quite difficult situation.
If we were to simply promote crime prevention and law and order, it would be a far cry from the quality of the first edition. Though it would not necessarily make us enemies of the people, it might earn us the epithet of being an anti-climax.
"The Special Action Team is scheduled to launch a full-scale attack on the ’Wild Boar’ territory next week. Let’s keep that as backup news."
That day, Song Lan gained profound insight into the pain of being a journalist. No wonder wherever big news breaks out, journalists storm the site like sharks attracted by the smell of blood.
Speaking of big news, the arrival of the big shot mentioned by Tesla Tech in District 17 might bring them a sensational headline.
This had put Song Lan into a quandary.
On one hand, he hoped that the VIP could maintain top-level secrecy, avoid visiting any places, cause no incidents during their stay in District 17, and leave safely so that they could acquire Tesla Tech’s equipment for nothing. But on the other hand, if the identity of the VIP was exposed, it would inevitably cause a sensation in the city - the perfect content for the second edition of the Law Enforcement Handbook.
But these conflicting feelings didn’t linger in Song Lan’s mind for long because he was an optimist, someone who always looked at problems from different perspectives.
Therefore, if he changed his perspective, the scenario becomes a win-win regardless whether the VIP leaves District 17 safely, or their identity is exposed creating a public disturbance.
You see, that’s how opportunities are made.
Our aim should always be to make gains without risking any losses.
And so, after three days of calm before the storm, the VIP arrived in District 17.
It turned out that Song Lan’s idea of simply sitting in the office doing nothing and still getting Tesla Tech’s military equipment was naive because the same morning, this intel was quickly disseminated across Gold Diggers’ Bar.
That day, not only did the people of District 17 become aware that a VIP would be visiting District 17, but her identity was also revealed.
The daughter of Twelfth Nation’s leader.
The purpose of her visit to District 17 was transit, ultimately intended to go to The First Region to ask for military help from the Review Council.
Though the Twelfth Nation’s military strength was weak, as a trading center amongst the 13 Neutral Nations, they were indeed wealthy.
Rumor has it that the leader’s daughter was carrying a large sum of money on this trip as military expenditure for seeking help from the United Government. The news led criminals from "outside" and Gold Diggers from neighboring cities to rush to District 17.
No wonder Tesla Tech hoped that the law enforcement department could maintain public order during her stay in District 17.
Given the current situation of the Twelfth Nation, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to describe her as a Princess of a Fallen Kingdom.
Moreover, she was a Princess of a Fallen Kingdom who was carrying the "inheritance" of the Twelfth Nation.
But there’s one thing that’s been bothering Song Lan.
In this highly developed era of 2166, why can’t they, after arriving in District 17, take a direct flight to The First Region?
The food delivery shop he frequently orders from operates with much more efficiency than this.
The same was the case with the Witch of the Snow, Aishi.
Initially not their problem. However, those in charge of escorting Aishi suddenly had a seizure.
Song Lan didn’t know which department of the United Government arranged the itinerary for these "foreign guests," but he strongly recommended that the leader of that department pack up and leave.
If this department was investigated thoroughly, he believed that at least half of the employees were likely to be moles from the Rebel Army.
And, how did the news get out in the first place?
These questions terrified Song Lan as it made him believe that there were traitors everywhere, both within the United Government and around the Princess of a Fallen Kingdom.
"A hard-luck princess of a fallen kingdom carrying loads of cash?"
Zhuang Chi had obviously heard the latest rumor blowing up around Gold Diggers’ Bar. Her eyes were shining, "This is big news."
"Indeed, it could be the main content for our next issue of the Law Enforcement Handbook, but we need to find a way to gather more information,"
said Roger.
Currently, they knew less about the Princess of the Fallen Kingdom than the information peddlers from the Gold Diggers’ Bar do. If we only talk in general, not only would it fail to attract public attention, but people would question if we just got the internet, "I could make a trip to the Gold Diggers’ Bar and see what I can find out."
He maintained good relations with the mayor of Lyon City and the bar boss Ophir. Since the news originated from the Gold Diggers’ Bar, this could work.
"Rather than that, I have been pondering on something since earlier."
Zhuang Chi was resting her hand on her lip, playing the "thinker" in the office early that day.
She had truly been deep in thought about it all morning.
"What do you think are the odds of us successfully stealing her money and framing it on the Rebel Army?"
