Chapter 1211: Chapter 994: The Story of the Dark Magician_2

The sky outside the prosthetic hospital was gradually darkening, and Song Lan sat amongst many patients, feeling extremely anxious.

He had ultimately overlooked something critical and misjudged the situation; by the time he drove to the hospital, registrations had already extended beyond the hundredth person.

The person sitting beside him had broken their nasal bone for various bizarre reasons caused by dizziness.

Each person was frowning and covering their nose, and he blended perfectly into the crowd.

"Patient 173, please proceed to room 4."

The synthetic female voice from above announced his number, and like the other patients, Song Lan entered room 4 with a nervous heart, marked by its electronic sign.

Don’t replace my nose, don’t replace my nose, don’t replace my nose!

He chanted in his mind.

He admitted to himself that he was slightly regretful. Out of affirmation for more than two decades of human form endeavour, he had taken a heavy blow head-on, but it seemed that the location of the punch was somewhat problematic.

"What, did you also break your... Huh!?"

The doctor in the room stood up in surprise upon seeing Song Lan.

Jasmine was still in her white, nano-fitted combat suit paired with a white lab coat, with her eyes wide open at the moment. Out of reflex, she took out a camera. With a "click," Song Lan’s pained and furrowed expression was eternally captured.

"Why are you here?"

Both pointed at each other, almost in unison.

After a pause, Jasmine answered first, "The prosthetic hospital is overwhelmed, I’ve come to volunteer."

This afternoon, she had heard too many bizarre reasons for broken nasal bones, "Don’t tell me yours was caused by dizziness too."

"It’s not dizziness, I got involved in another incident."

"Another incident?"

"Sort of like running into some hoodlums on the street, and then receiving a heavy punch."

Great.

Jasmine heard a reason that was stranger than all the previous ones combined.

Song Lan got beaten up by hoodlums on his way home; nobody would believe this reason unless they saw it with their own eyes.

She glanced at the cubic object still emitting a dark glow tucked under Song Lan’s left arm and rolled her eyes, "What’s this? Did the hoodlum drop some loot?"

"Since you’ve asked so earnestly..."

Song Lan took a deep breath, sat down at the table, and placed the cubic object on it, "Jasmine, have you ever heard about the Dark Magician?"

...

After Song Lan’s extravagant storytelling, Jasmine roughly understood the sequence of events.

They were colleagues working in the same department now, and she had long learned how to pick out the credible parts from Song Lan’s fraudster language, while δ hiding in the shadows shivering, demonstrated that this cube containing unknown energy was no trivial matter.

If she remembered correctly, when she decided to volunteer at the prosthetic hospital, she was mocked by δ. δ sarcastically taunted her that the smart ones should have already started running for their lives by now because soon, The First Region would meet its destruction.

Unable to convince Jasmine, δ coldly laughed and left a message, "Don’t blame me for not warning you, just rot here," before blending into the shadows and walking away.

However, it wasn’t long before Jasmine found out that δ, who had claimed to leave alone, sneakily followed her to the prosthetic hospital.

"So, you’re saying you encountered a gang leader nicknamed ’Dark Magician.’"

Jasmine summed up.

Clearly, this name was forced upon the other party by Song Lan; no street thug would give themselves such an old-fashioned, crumbly nickname these days.

"And to completely put him out of action, you divided his body into several parts, and this black cubic object is one of them. If this gang leader wants to regroup, he’ll have to gather the scattered energy blocks and reassemble them."

Of course, this was only a theoretical possibility.

Apart from this ordinary office worker with his nasal bone broken by a street thug, it’s unlikely there’s anyone else in the world who could reach other timelines.

Although the story sounded very calm coming from Song Lan’s mouth, Jasmine could imagine how intense the battle was. The sudden outbreak of worldwide dizziness was probably also caused by this battle.

So, with this, the rumor that Song Lan’s nose was broken by street thugs gained a shred of credibility.

Her heart was clear, the truth was far from this.

δ had recently diagnosed the sudden dizzy spells as sequelae induced by a forced "recruitment of faith," and the thought that someone had gathered so much faith made δ restless.

She believed that this could be the only opponent on par with the Devil, but it was certain that this battle, no matter who won, could cause the destruction of The First Region, and even the entire United Government.

Just like the once destroyed upper world.

"Come on, let me take a look first."

Jasmine stood up, got close to Song Lan, and began a careful examination.

"You do need to take a good look, but I want to make it clear in advance that I disagree with implanting prosthetic parts... I’ve heard about the current atmosphere in the prosthetic hospital, where to sell expensive prosthetic packages, even for minor issues, doctors would recommend prosthetic replacement or factory repairs."

Song Lan’s nervous expression really amused Jasmine, he looked like one of those old men who don’t trust modern medicine but have to come to the hospital for treatment because of illness.

No matter what the doctor says, he would always maintain a skeptical attitude.

"Um... There are no other injuries besides the nasal bridge."

As the examination went deeper, Jasmine’s expression became more and more astonished.

As she said, except for the broken nose, she didn’t find any other injuries on Song Lan—not even a scratch.

She had seen too many patients before, and this clearly didn’t fit the definition of an evenly matched combat.

It looked more like...

Song Lan had symbolically let the other party break his nose and then instantly killed the opponent.

This was bound to be a battle she couldn’t understand, and no one would know what happened under the building of military technology.

Perhaps as δ said, the "Dark Magician" was the most formidable enemy the United Government ever faced; sadly, before making everyone realize his horror, in that unknown place, he had a melee with "just-passing-by office worker Song Lan."

"No need for a prosthetic part, right?"

The tense question brought her back to reality, Jasmine cleared her throat and said, "Not necessary, but if you don’t want your nose to be crooked later, I need to put a splint on it. You’d better stay home and rest for the next few days, and try to avoid secondary injury... By the way, did you tell Lu Xiang about this?"

"Not yet, the Counter-Intelligence Department should be very busy today, there’s no need to worry her."

"Well, then you just go back and take care of yourself, anyway, you don’t come to the department much, it’s all the same."

While nodding, Jasmine discreetly sent Lu Xiang the message that Song Lan was beaten up by street thugs and had his nose broken.

Watching Song Lan’s joyful eyes upon hearing that he didn’t need a prosthetic, and watching his light footsteps as he left the room, she suddenly realized that the path might be lonelier than she had thought.

And their chief seemed to have long been accustomed to such solitude.

There was no ecstasy over defeating a strong enemy, nor any haste to proclaim his contributions to everyone; had she not volunteered at the hospital today and coincidentally met him, she probably wouldn’t have known the "Dark Magician" story.

Song Lan truly appeared as if he had just had a fight with street thugs and then calmly returned home.

Jasmine suppressed the mixed thoughts in her heart.

She guessed that Song Lan didn’t need the Review Meeting’s accolades or the department’s celebration banquet, but she wasn’t going to let him go back home alone just like that.

...

Arriving downstairs at the hospital, Song Lan breathed a sigh of relief, and the anxiety he had been carrying all the way finally settled.

He touched the brace on his nose with his hand.

His nose would definitely not end up crooked!

It was in a daze that he heard a familiar sound from above.

A floating vehicle with the Counter-Intelligence Department emblem tore through the air, and hastily descended in front of the hospital.

The car door opened.

Then, a familiar figure came into his sight.
