Chapter 1187: Chapter 984: Our Friend Xiaofu
2141, January 21st, Mr. Benjamin Abell passed away in The First Region.
This was another significant victory in an anti-terrorism operation by the Homeland Security Bureau, which severely struck the brazen momentum of the "Outside" terrorist forces. As a result of this operation, Mr. Vince Mott, the commander of the operation, was awarded the third-class Gold Medal of Peace by the Review Meeting, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the anti-terrorism efforts of the United Government.
But there were also rumors that the day’s operation to capture Benjamin Abell was filled with a strange atmosphere.
Some sources, who wished to remain anonymous, disclosed that Benjamin suddenly died violently.
His chest was pierced by an unknown attack, through which one could directly see the scenery on the other side.
By the time people snapped out of their daze, Benjamin was already lying in a pool of blood.
The Homeland Security Bureau’s personnel only arrived afterwards, and to those who had personally experienced the event that day, it seemed all they did was recover the body.
Later that evening, Benjamin Abell was designated as the number one terrorist by the Review Meeting, linking him to a series of recent incidents.
These questions also continuously troubled Vince Mott.
During the medal award ceremony, his heart felt no joy or pride; only endless doubts.
He had reviewed the prosthetic hospital’s recordings countless times, trying to reconstruct the scene and piece together the truths buried by history, yet all that remained were puzzling fragments.
The Homeland Security Bureau could not find any suspicious individuals from the recordings; they only saw Benjamin Abell standing still, eyes wide open, as if seeing a terrifying vision. It was hard to imagine what sort of sight could elicit such an expression from a terrorist.
Then, an unseen force pierced through his chest.
"Sigh—"
In the staff lounge, Vince Mott turned off the repeatedly watched video, briefly feeling a sense of disorientation.
The words of his superior came to his mind.
Who killed Benjamin Abell and why he died were not important; the important fact was that Benjamin was a complete terrorist, intending to overthrow the government of the United Government, and the Homeland Security Bureau had killed the terrorist on the spot, safeguarding the homeland and the residents of The First Region. This was an indisputable fact.
Therefore, he rightly deserved the third-class Gold Medal of Peace.
Vince Mott, as a specially appointed teacher, had a private office in the Morning Star Academy. He only needed to look up to see the medal hanging on the wall.
The medal, originally symbolizing honor and contribution, was now full of ironic meaning.
If there was any regret left in his position at the Homeland Security Bureau, it was probably that he couldn’t clear up the events of that year even until his retirement. His intuition told him that the matter was far from as simple as it appeared on the surface.
But...
Over 20 years have passed, history’s dust has settled, and he had gone from being a frontline commander to a retired rehired "Dangerous Prevention" course teacher.
With two more classes in the morning, Vince Mott reminded himself to focus on the upcoming classes. Among this batch of Newborns, there were several joking, troublesome kids. Just thinking about the Peacekeeping Forces soldiers who died in anti-terrorism operations made him unable to resist giving a stern lecture.
Perhaps one day, the memories of being lectured in class can keep them alert and prevent them from losing their lives on the frontline.
Vince Mott picked up his tablet and walked out of his office.
He was a person with an extremely regular life, always liking to leave the staff room at 7:15 in the morning, strolling around the campus, watching the students hurrying to their classrooms, their faces either laughing or troubled, making Vince Mott feel truly alive in this era.
Occasionally, he would meet a cleaner downstairs, a woman in her 60s.
Her children all worked in the unified military industry, and she found a job at Morning Star through connections. Usually, he would stop and chat with the old lady.
However, today, Vince Mott stopped his steps.
He stood behind the cleaner, staring at her.
The cleaner was very focused on her work and did not notice Vince Mott standing there; she was bent over, adjusting the code of the cleaning robot.
In 2167, the responsibilities of cleaners had undergone significant changes. They no longer needed to do everything manually but had to master the use of various cleaning robots to ensure their proper functioning.
"What happened to your arm?"
After a long while, Vince Mott finally spoke up.
He noticed that the cleaner’s originally yellowish skin had turned a bluish-purple, with clearly visible veins underneath, looking like the signs of some illness, yet the cleaner seemed oblivious to it.
"Oh, is that you, Teacher Vince? My arm? What about it?"
The cleaner’s expression didn’t seem feigned. Hearing Vince Mott’s inquiry, she even lifted her arm, scrutinizing it for a while, and then nonchalantly moved her wrist a few times. She did not understand why Vince Mott suddenly asked that, but she still explained, "My arm is fine, it’s always been like this."
No, that was a lie.
The change appeared today; Vince Mott clearly remembered greeting her yesterday, and there had been no abnormalities on her body then.
