Chapter 1185: Chapter 983: Scum

The following morning, a faint sadness enveloped the entire prosthetic hospital.

Gustav and Anjing had slept well last night for a change, slipping into the hospital before Qi Yun’s corpse ceremony began, following Qi He’s instructions and donning the white coats of the medical staff.

Shortly thereafter, they would be responsible for the entire process of cremating and transporting the body.

This was the way of the United Government’s funerals; even company employees were no exception. In The First Region, where every inch of land was precious, no mausoleums were built. An old-fashioned mailbox-like device was used for the placement of ashes and personal effects, yet only the prominent figures could secure a narrow space on the device.

Should an ordinary company employee meet an accident in The First Region, a funeral is usually not arranged for them. Some of their possessions would be sent back to their families by the company as a last remembrance.

The two stood at the end of the line, watching this bitterly ironic scene.

A large crowd gathered, including high-ranking officials from the Homeland Security Bureau, the rescuer department, and the Psychic research institutions. What should have been a grand funeral had turned into a blame-shifting spectacle.

The Homeland Security Bureau blamed the Psychic Research Institution for ignoring warnings, insisting their act of forcefully transporting the patient caused Qi Yun’s death; the Research Institution argued it was the Homeland Security Bureau’s interception that gave the assassin time. Because the body went through the prosthetic hospital, Qi Yun died of poisoning, appearing more like a murder through assassination under the cover of fog.

Multiple signs at the scene suggested the explosion was the work of a Psychic.

As for Qi Yun’s parents, they stood grim-faced at the hospital room door, watching the incessant disputes among the blame-shifters.

More incredibly, after all that had happened, the Psychic Research Institution shamelessly proposed to Qi Yun’s parents to reclaim the prosthetics for more in-depth autopsy research, under the guise of a noble cause, claiming it was a sacrifice to cure more patients.

Even Qi Yun’s indifferent parents were shocked by Jiu’s demand.

They flatly refused this excessive request; if the people present were not respectable, the person who made such a demand might have been beaten up by the grieving family.

"Tsk, typical of the Psychic Research Institution."

Unable to suppress his urge to mock, Gustav whispered.

When it came to inhumanity, he found it difficult to think of anything more beastly than Jiu; he could hardly imagine a sane human being able to make such an outrageous request in this context.

To him, Jiu’s thinking was unlike the purely rational calculations of artificial intelligence – all his actions were merely to satisfy his almost pathological curiosity.

If necessary, he would even send anyone close to him to the operating table.

"Want me to teach him a lesson?"

Without changing his expression, Gustav covertly asked Qi He, waiting on the other end of the intercom, although Song Lan had said that acting rashly might provoke fate’s retaliation, he thought he could arrange an ’accident’ within reasonable bounds.

For example, clumsily tripping an over-eighty-year-old Jiu on the stairs, breaking a few ribs.

This would be the outcome many were hoping for; even hospital staff cast scornful looks at Jiu after hearing his demand.

The only sorrow came from the young Qi He.

Ever since arriving at the hospital, he had stubbornly stayed by Qi Yun’s bedside, unwilling to leave.

"Don’t create unnecessary complications."

Qi He said calmly, "If necessary, don’t hold back even on me."

Of course, he was referring to little Qi He, who refused to leave the bedside. The delay in transporting the body was not just due to the endless squabbling between the Homeland Security Bureau and the Psychic Research Institution, but also the young Qi He.

The previous batch of medical staff had been driven away by him, and the adults didn’t rush him, allowing the time to the seemingly only grieving child here.

Their intentions were good, but it caused delays.

After the body switch, they had to figure out how to get Qi Yun out of the city; only upon reaching the "outside" would they be barely safe from the military technology’s surveillance.

"It’s getting late."

With the instructions received, Gustav tactfully informed the hospital’s person in charge.

But he really didn’t have the heart to deal with little Qi He; not just because the kid would be his future boss, and breaking his ribs now might lead to future workplace bullying, but also because for a child unaware of the truth, this was undeniably life’s most difficult moment.

After seeing how Qi He’s parents dealt with the situation, he vaguely understood the relationship between the siblings.

The busy work at the company nearly caused the parents to be absent from Qi He’s childhood, and the only one who accompanied him at home was Qi Yun, who worked in the less demanding rescuer department.

A child’s lingering attachments often follow one throughout life.

Soon, the hospital bed was pushed out of the room, with the young Qi He following it all the way, unwilling to leave for a long time. His parents stayed at the hospital room door, negotiating the aftermath of the accident.

In this tragedy, the one who died was Qi Yun, but actually, few were truly concerned for this four-star rescuer.

Following the elevator down, and after passing through the silent and lengthy corridor, the procession gradually dispersed, leaving only Gustav and Anjing by the hospital bed.
