Chapter 1138: Chapter 962: Your 23 Ways to Die
Leaving the fourth district and being transferred to prison, the same nightmare always tormented Vadim.
It was a place forever shrouded in darkness, where he was like a traveler who had strayed into the dark. After passing through layers of fog, what welcomed him up ahead was always an architecture incredibly bizarre to the extreme.
Vadim did not know how to describe this architecture. It possessed countless cave-like spaces, each seemingly containing statues. But whenever he tried to delve deeper to find out, he would awaken from the nightmare, followed by a shivering that came from his soul.
Now this was happening again.
He exhaled a breath of cold air and used his index fingernail to record the content from his nightmares within his limited range of movement.
"Life," "Time," "Dominate," "Nothingness"...
These were the only four rooms opened to him.
Vadim guessed that these four probably represented the powers of the Spirit Ability Path. However, after being imprisoned, the blessing of "Nothingness" disappeared, reverting him to a state where his artificial body was scrapped and he lost his Spiritual Energy. He could not even confirm if he was already dead, constantly wandering inside nightmares with his lingering soul.
Reality was more despairing than nightmares.
His body was trapped inside some kind of container, and he could no longer remember how long it had been since he last saw light, with only endless darkness and solitude accompanying him; the concept of time had already become blurry.
Initially, he tried calling out, trying to draw someone’s attention, but it turned out that he was the only one here.
The only hope lay in the repeated nightmares.
These four terms must represent something.
Or perhaps Vadim hoped they represented something.
Before being sent to prison, "Nothingness" had told him that his future was fraught with hardships and unprecedented suffering awaited him in prison, but amidst despair, there was also hope.
If he was lucky enough, he might gain a new life here.
During his time in captivity, aside from the recurring nightmares, Vadim repeatedly recalled the warning given by "Nothingness" before parting—perhaps this had already occurred hundreds of times.
And this time, something seemed to have changed.
The tip of his index finger felt a scorching temperature, and Vadim almost instantly knew what this temperature signified.
"Nothingness."
He carved what he had explored in his nightmares onto the surface of the container with his fingernail.
Then, meditation...
Vadim did not know why he had such a thought; this idea emerged in his mind as if it were instinctual, and putting it into action did not seem difficult.
Then, something in the dark was lit.
Some invisible force responded to his prayer, he felt his body change, becoming lighter than ever before. The restraints in the container could no longer control his movements; when the thought of "escaping from the container" arose, his body moved on its own.
Everything became so unfamiliar.
In the state of meditation, his movements seemed to have turned into some kind of turn-based game, and now, he was in the God’s-eye view of the game controlling his own actions.
He did not struggle, nor did he need to break the container.
His vision floated up, following that invisible force, and escaped the container in a way that defied physical rules.
His eyes, long deprived of it, encountered light for the first time, allowing Vadim to see clearly the container that had been confining his body—a more than two meters tall egg-shaped object. Its surface was wrapped with black tendrils that made him feel nauseated, but more unbelievably concerning details emerged as he paid attention.
After leaving the egg-shaped container, his feet did not touch the ground; instead, they continued to float in mid-air, overlooking everything in the room.
This seemed more like the perspective after death.
The soul and consciousness had left his body; he had heard military tech personnel discuss that under certain extreme conditions, a person’s consciousness does not disperse with death but continues as a Consciousness Entity.
Vadim surveyed his surroundings; it appeared to be an experimental facility.
At least, it used to be.
The experimental facility seemed to have been abandoned for a long time, thin black tendrils had crawled up the walls, the floor covered with a layer of dark purple fungal mat, the drainage system occupied by mucus, inside which churned ominous-colored foam.
A sudden experimental accident had turned this place into a hell on earth, the creatures that escaped from the accident devoured the researchers and made this place their nest.
Devourers.
Undoubtedly, this was the most suitable name for such monsters; it had an insatiable hunger, devouring everything within its reach was its instinct.
At this thought, Vadim suddenly froze.
Company research accidents were not uncommon, Kolo Film Industry had shot many superhero movies themed around laboratory accidents, but... why would he know these details?
When he tried to recall carefully, however, he could not remember when he had come across information about the Devourers before; Vadim was very certain that before today, he had never encountered these disgusting monsters.
Reality did not leave him much time to judge the situation; he heard the heavy sound of the safety door moving, that sound coming from afar and approaching his compartment with alarming speed.
An unprecedented sense of crisis surged in his heart.
