Chapter 1123: Chapter 955: Heart-to-Heart True Friend
"Monkfish is one of the most dangerous prisoners in D Zone, next time you encounter it, you might not be so lucky."
As the "Emperor" walked out of the contestants’ corridor, a fleeting, unstable shadow leaned against the wall and spoke.
The shadow did not hide its malice, tauntingly saying, "The Strongest Modified Person, how long can your good fortune last?"
"This is the 19th fight."
Ignoring the other’s provocation, the "Emperor" said indifferently, "One more fight, and it should be time for your supervisor to step into the arena personally."
He had long grown accustomed to the inmates’ ridicule and sarcasm. After all, including the shadow before his eyes, many had been sent in by him, and he naturally did not expect a group of criminals to have any sense of honor. However, if he could deal with the Judge of the gladiator arena, then the true ruler lurking behind the scenes would have to show themselves.
But this path was destined to be full of obstacles.
According to the intelligence collected by RT6, the current overseer of the gladiator arena, the Judge, was not appointed out of thin air. He had also become the strongest by defeating all his opponents in battle after battle. Even RT6’s tone became grave when mentioning the Judge, saying that the Judge and those he had faced so far were not even in the same dimension.
The shadow before his eyes was the "agent" assigned to him. An agent’s job typically involves contact, promotion, and scheduling matches and dates for contestants. However, this "agent" of his had been hoping he would die at the hands of someone else since the first day of work.
In response to his earlier reply, the shadow laughed exaggeratedly, with laughter so distorted it became blurry.
"Don’t overestimate yourself. To the boss, you are just a toy for passing the time. He can get rid of you in an instant if he wants. But if you can make the boss happy, perhaps he will indeed keep his word and let you meet the Master."
The Master is what the prisoners call the ruler, who, in their eyes, has become no different from a deity for having created D Zone.
At this point, the shadow abruptly changed tone, "But you’re bound not to last that long anyway, your next opponent has been decided—it’s still Monkfish."
"Does a defeated underling still qualify for another challenge?"
"Monkfish’s record is 22 wins and 6 losses, no, now it should be 22 wins and 7 losses. But do you know what happened to the first six who beat it? Five of them suffered a mental breakdown in the second battle and have since been depressed, now probably toiling away somewhere in C Zone. As for the remaining one..."
The shadow purposefully paused for a moment before continuing, "It’s already been swallowed into its belly, and probably has been digested by now. For that monster, the first fight is just a probe. Even with only one cell left, it can rise again from the dust, and its truly formidable part is its terrifying adaptability. By the next time you meet, your abilities will already be ineffective against it!"
What could an Ability User who has lost his abilities do?
"That half-baked suit of iron you wear could probably make for a decent lunch. The next match is the day after tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your life before then."
The "Emperor" couldn’t see the shadow’s expression, but the other’s arrogant laughter echoed in the corridor for a long time.
Yet that laughter didn’t last long. It seemed the shadow heard some command, and the smile abruptly stopped. First, there was astonishment, then the expression turned as uncomfortable as if having swallowed a fly.
The shadow looked deeply at the "Emperor," seemingly trying to discern whether the news he just received had anything to do with the latter.
But from the perspectives of time and space, the "Emperor" had absolutely no chance.
The next moment, the shadow left a dark trail and disappeared into the wall.
At the same time, not far from the gladiator arena, several shadows gathered together as if facing a great enemy.
Monkfish is a contestant that the Judge appreciates highly, or perhaps it’s more accurate to call it the "pet" of the boss. For the violent and even man-eating behaviors of this "pet dog," the boss has always turned a blind eye, for in D Zone, if you’re devoured by other inmates, it’s only because you’re not strong enough.
However, at this moment, Monkfish was found in an alley not far from the gladiator arena.
This was its most common feeding spot, luring newcomers here and then swallowing them. Such things had happened many times before, but this time, Monkfish itself had become the prey.
Its sagging dark tentacles were visible everywhere; its body was surprisingly intact. For a monster that could regenerate from even a single cell, it lay dead here.
The sole injury came from the petite figure lying prone in the alley.
Her eyes were devoid of luster, and a penetrative wound in her chest was clearly visible.
"It’s over, it’s over, it’s over!"
This thought crossed the minds of all shadows.
With the boss’s temperament, if he knew that his "beloved dog" died here, the whole district would be turned upside down.
What they could do now was to find the murderer who killed Monkfish and present them to the boss before he lost his temper, perhaps only by executing the murderer could some of the boss’s rage be quelled.
Meanwhile, elsewhere, a young man entered a seemingly quiet restaurant, with a little shadow trailing behind him.
