Chapter 1112: Chapter 951: Prison Rules
As a mere wage worker, Song Lan ultimately could not dodge the fate of a business trip.
After he briefly arranged work at H1, amidst the farewells of his colleagues, he carried a bag of pork buns and boarded the hovercraft bound for the "Old World".
The Old World was Lu Xiang’s term for the prison, said to be so vast it didn’t seem like a prison but a real world unknown to anyone. Even the Councilors rarely knew of its existence—only the top echelons of companies that deal with artificial intelligence all day, like Tesla Technology and military technology, could have some sort of contact with that world.
Since the Dark Age, mechanical entities have drawn boundaries with humans and established their own enclaves on uncharted lands.
But from the fragments of information revealed by Lu Xiang, one could see that the Old World was definitely not a pleasant place, especially since many vicious criminals from the Dark Age were imprisoned there.
This is an era where Spiritual Energy, genetics, and machinery coexist; almost every few years, terrorists who cannot be eliminated by conventional means would emerge from the corners of the world. Even the death penalty couldn’t rid them completely, and out of desperation, the Review Meeting simply sent these villains to the enclaves of artificial intelligence.
This decision proved to be effective. Regardless of the notorious backgrounds of the criminals sent there, the artificial intelligence faction accepted all comers and indeed honored the agreement, ensuring that those people would never leave prison again.
Leaning against the plush cushions of the hovercar, Lu Xiang recounted to Song Lan what she knew about the Old World.
Her voice was somewhat muffled. In her left hand, she held a pork bun with a bite taken out, and in her right was a steaming cup of sweet soy milk. Although the breakfast was not complicated, it was much better than instant coffee.
"Why do I feel like I’ve heard something like this before?"
"Hmm?"
"The Lunar Eclipse Sect used to do this, confining the monstrous manifestations of consciousness into the mines, turning the area into a hellish nest of dark spirits."
In Song Lan’s view, this was no long-term solution.
Should an event like a gas leak occur one day, causing the prison to collapse, the monsters emerging en masse could potentially destroy the entire city in a short period.
Moreover, Song Lan remembered someone once assured him that those beings spawned from human thoughts could not be eliminated by conventional means and would only weaken or vanish if everyone forgot about their existence.
Based on this theory, Archbishop Helifis’s strategy was to confine the anomalies in the mining regions until they were completely forgotten over several generations. The theory seemed idyllic, but it ignored a serious real-world issue—good news seldom goes beyond the gate, while bad news spreads far and wide.
This was just like those criminals who once launched terrorist attacks under the United Government. To this day, many people inquire about their deeds and post the snippets of stories they hear on various online social media platforms.
Later, however, Song Lan realized that this was all nonsense. These dark spirits never had a setting like "indestructible." The main reason was that most people he met had "special attack" values that were too low and lacked powerful skills like the Invincible Universe’s Heart-Piercing Knife-Hand.
"This is not a sustainable solution."
Clearly, there were others on this vehicle who shared his opinion.
The man who spoke was dressed in tattered clothes, his hands cuffed behind his back with military technology’s anti-Spiritual Energy handcuffs.
Truth be told, when they went to collect Angle early in the morning from military technology, the Restraints on his body had been several times more than now. The research staff of military technology tried every trick in the book to restrict every joint of this serious offender with anti-Spiritual Energy locks.
Even so, as they arrived, the representative of the company remained on high alert until they finally breathed a sigh of relief after handing Angle over to them.
The numerous Restraints were removed at Song Lan’s request, and they symbolically left Angle with a pair of handcuffs equipped with an anti-Spiritual Energy field device.
Requesting this wasn’t only because Angle was his good friend but also because if others saw him in that state on the street, both he and Lu Xiang would probably be mistaken for bad actors with deviant proclivities.
Recently, the Rebel Army had been rampant, and they had to guard against them.
"This kind of irresponsible handling is no different from releasing a tiger back to the mountain. If one day there’s a problem with the prison, the entire First Region will become fellow casualties."
Angle shared his insights as if he didn’t consider his current status as a serious offender who was sent to the station.
"Trust in the artificial intelligence; they definitely know how to suppress those prisoners."
"You seem to know a lot about artificial intelligence?"
Angle pondered, "I vaguely remember that the Seventeenth Region was one of the hardest hit areas of the artificial intelligence revolution. Reliable information received by the anomalies investigation suggested that a large number of rogue artificial intelligences fled to the Seventeenth Region and eventually vanished without a trace."
Some people believed they used the Seventeenth Region to escape to the "outside world," while others thought that certain people in the region with ulterior motives harbored them.
Evidence is that the Law Enforcers showed little effort in the pursuit of the fleeing artificial intelligences, seriously delaying the chance to strike, which is completely inconsistent with Lu Xiang’s usual manner.
A moment later, he seemed to have an epiphany, "You provided refuge for the rogue artificial intelligences and established a good relationship with their leaders... but to what end? Amassing troops to prepare for the impending war with the Rebel Army?"
